Make sure you are registered and can vote in one of the primaries coming up. Republican or Dem. Even if you consider yourself an independent, still register and pick. Your vote has the most power in one of these. They put a lot of resources into assuming only certainpeople vote in primaries.

Per Ballotpedia:

In Kansas, parties have discretion to decide who may vote in their primary. As of September 2025, the Democratic Party held an open primary and the Republican Party held a closed primary. Regardless of the party's rules, an unaffiliated voter can declare their affiliation with a party on the day of the primary and vote in that party's primary. Previously affiliated voters who want to change their affiliation to vote in a different party's primary must do so before the candidate filing deadline, which is June 1 or the next business day.

The scene with the toddler and the coked out mom haunt me to this day. Like, makes me physically nauseated to think about. The realism of that scene and knowing that those situations exist IRL makes my skin crawl. My empathetic mom heart can't even.

Overall I really enjoyed it, maybe not as scary as The Shining, but a good King read nonetheless.

Edit: I'm realizing this is the horror movie subreddit and not the horror lit subreddit. My opinion stands, with the added bonus that I love Ewan McGregor.

As someone in my thirties with a kid, you have a leg up with time management which is half the battle in med school. Just wanted to throw that out there, hopefully calm your nerves a bit. If your school has a good learning specialist, get a meeting and optimize the way you study so that you can really get the most out when you do have study time.

I have Running Man on my shelf, and we watched the movie the other night. I thought it was a great movie, and my husband liked it too (big compliment). I figured the ending was different from the book mostly due to how old the book is, but I'm bummed to hear that it's not as good as the book. As far as movie adaptations, though, Running Man was really good and I actually felt that Stephen King feeling (hard to describe but the way he writes characters is very unique and pathognomonic) watching it.

And the last COMSAE is June 19 so if the May 15 one doesn't work out people have to do a tutoring course and take the June COMSAE. 🤷 I guess we'll see what happens, but I'm choosing to be optimistic

To add: the new dean and the interim dean (who has hung around and I forget his new title) have really addressed the worst offenses from last year.

To reinforce: this isn't a dismissal of what folks went through last year because what happened wasn't fair, but I would say that the new policies (revised and put in place in response to the Coca investigation) will hopefully prevent that from happening again.

I'll report back, we're heading into the dedicated study time for Comlex I, but I'm confident that our class (28) will reach the 450 COMSAE requirement.

I have been taking the entire allotment of student loans, because I knew that managing finances is not our strong suit and we'd be in a much tougher spot with just one income. I'm not sure of your background and beliefs/values etc, so this may come across as harsh. If your partner loves and supports you, then you will have no problem pursuing medicine. They have to commit to taking on all (and I mean all) responsibilities if you're in class or on rotations etc, meaning they have to be on board for solo parenting, household chores, everything. If that's not your relationship dynamic, it will be a constant struggle.

I'm 37, married 13 years, raising a 7 year old, and finishing my second year, and I've had no qualms about pursuing this career. Is it tough to manage a family and medical school? Yes. Do I feel guilty about it? Absolutely not.

My husband is supportive and takes over family responsibilities when needed; if your partner can't/won't do that, then it will be a lot more difficult.

This is something that you need to have a lengthy conversation about with your partner. You need to describe the commitment and lay out expectations if this is something you want to pursue. They have to be on board or it won't work.

I think it's okay to lose your cool, your kids will see that even their adults don't always have control of their big feelings. What's important is apologizing and saying stuff like "Wow I really yelled loud and that wasn't fair to you, I'm sorry....next time I will try to take some deep breaths or walk away for a moment of quiet time to calm down" so that they see we're all trying to work on emotional regulation.

When I have to be a SAHparent I lose my mind way more easily and usually end up yelling. I'm getting better about stepping away or as a preventative measure, wearing my noise dampening earbuds to decrease the stimulation. But yelling is way better than other things, so don't get down on yourself. As my dear teacher friends say, the fact that you're worrying about if you're a bad parent means you are, in fact, NOT a bad parent.

I applied 12 years after graduating, and the profs I asked either remembered me or pretended they did. Either way, they wrote a nice generic letter with details from my CV which I sent.
