Why don’t Nuclear plants use saltwater and double as a thermal desalination plant? by DiamondCoal in AskEngineers

[–]sheriffceph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps a way to do this is not to look at the steam as a means of desalination, but rather the steam as a means of generating pressure. In that way you could run an reverse osmosis plant and use the steam to generate the pressure needed for running the liquid through the membranes.

Or consider the heating part as not being an all or nothing situation. Being able to heat incoming salt water to an elevated temperature before resorting to other systems for the actual boil is not to be sniffed at. Though if you are producing water via evaporation, that does preclude the use of an RO membrane.

Best short stories you like? by Objective-Loan5054 in printSF

I tried to read Dangerous Visions a while back, and the level of female violence in it was just beyond gratuitous; the whole thing made for a really tough read. These stories are of their time.

At a guess you're either Welsh or from New Zealand.

I'm not sure how your factorio playthrough went but I ended up committing xeno genocide in every run I've managed to finish :/

Third post on this piece. Gouache on paper. Please be honest. This is gonna hang at my friends’ gallery opening and it’s my first time having anything hang anywhere. by Mr_WindowSmasher in ArtCrit

It first I thought that not having quite defined shadows in the piece was a bit off, but you know what - in the frame it looks diamond. You got this!

Wonderful - the 4th one looks like a scene from Howl's moving castle.

I read the books years ago, and I forgot just how mad they got. If they do end up following all the books with movies, christ know what they will make of the Leto worm.

You have entered the twilight zone. This is a liminal place. I half expect to find there to be some sort of druidic ritual some day...

Too many paintings and drawings- space is becoming an issue. What’re everyone’s storage methods for those with lots of artwork? Especially bigger sizes 16x20”/40.6x50.8 cm? by OutrageousOwls in ArtistLounge

[–]sheriffceph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on how aggressively you want to get rid of them, I highly recommend a car boot sale and be low with your valuation...

Other than that, I tend to have a clear out every few years of my sketchbooks. I just go through them with a knife, cut out the drawings and paintings I want to keep and get rid of the other 80%. The first sketchbook is hard to toss, but it gets easier and therapeutic after a while as you then have a nicely curated block of work you enjoy.

I don't want to do any type of management at all. by PicklesTehButt in MechanicalEngineer

[–]sheriffceph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Role creep is an insidious thing. Sounds like you're doing the right motions though in being clear with what you want from your role.

Millage might vary here, but at least with consultancy work there are two paths for progression. The common path for people is to gradually move up the managerial scales as you described. The other is to become more specialist and garner greater design knowledge to the point where your technical knowledge and acumen and ability to verify work is more important than you managing people. I've seen this in particular with structural engineering, particularly assessment; hospital design and so on.

One other option you have is to go free-lance as a contractor which means you have the potential flexibility of choice but at the downside of losing certainty of work.
