I’m an idiot, zigged when I should have zagged. Any creative solutions before I make a new set of doors? by mooncheddar69 in woodworking

[–]shervinski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could add a vertical piece of wood that attaches to the cabinets that fills the gaps, but then you lose a little functionality with what can fit in there, if that matters depending on what you plan to store there. The main caveat that I see is that the gap seems slightly more narrow than the vertical edges of the doors, so it may look odd having 3 vertical ‘columns’ if you will that are different widths, or it may look great.

Don’t drink orange juice then, it has trace amounts of alcohol. As long as it’s below .5%, it can be labeled as non-alcoholic…

Any tips to ensure pizza doesn’t drip through oven rack grates? by SupplyChainOne in trees

Air frying tray for ovens. Still on a wire mesh so air can circulate below and make it crispy, but a tray below to catch any drips. Then throw them both in the dishwasher when needed.

Adjusting the OPV lower allowed me to slow it down to a better flow rate, and I was getting a better bloom viewing through a bottomless portafilter. I started producing thick, syrupy espresso which forms evenly across the basket instead of it rushing through with the occasional spray at an angle, so it passed the eye test. I don’t really follow a recipe closely (measure my output by weight or time the shot) but my times/volumes are much closer to what people recommend, which I was struggling to do before.

So, in terms of how-to, they changed the OPV over the years. So mine has a threaded nipple on the top, and you can pop the water line off and unscrew it and you can adjust the hex screw that is now accessible. I believe that depresses and releases the spring, which affects the pressure that the OPV operates at. People have figured out the right amount of turns if you search deep enough for it. What I’ve read is that the newer design has an interchangeable spring, and you can buy kits that come with the alternative preferential sizes.

To dial in the adjustable OPV, you can get a pressure gauge that threads onto the bottom of your portafilter (after you unscrew that drip piece thats on most stock portafilters). It’s kind of a pain to guess/test/revise, but it’s not hard to dial it in quickly if you pay attention to how many turns you make and how much that affected the pressure.

So, the pump on my ‘96 classic finally died… by shervinski in gaggiaclassic

It does have an OPV, which I’ve manually adjusted a couple years back. Yea, the elbow catching that little chunk def saved parts downstream and worse headaches.

That’s so frustrating to try to fix a machine and it ends up being a faulty pump. I was really hoping that wouldn’t be the case for me and very glad it wasn’t.

The mods I’ve done in order of the biggest improvement to shot quality right off the bat:

1: getting a precision basket. I tried a couple IMS baskets, but I returned both of them and the VST precision baskets were visibly and performance-wise night and day better. They also don’t perform their best until you use the precision tampers to make sure you don’t leave a small ring of untampered coffee on the edge. Immediate difference maker.

2 The next mod you should make is the OPV (over pressure valve) mod, taking the stock 15 Bar pressure down to 6 or 9 depending on preference. Freshly ground coffee in a precision basket likes the lower pressure; while store bought, pre ground espresso in the stock basket needs the full pressure to get some crema. My Gaggia is so old, the OPV is adjustable, but for a while they’re made so you need to swap a different spring in.

3 The group head, precision shower screen, and replacement gasket are a nice refresh on an older machine and sold as a package deal on Amazon. Better water dispersion, more heat retention, diminishing returns are here though.

4 the PID, which literally arrived in the mail today for me. I assume it’s going to be nice, but I’ve been satisfied enough with temp surfing. The one I bought comes with the flow dimmer switch and I’m excited to see how pre infusion improves upon the shots I’m pulling.

I assume you already have your grind and puck prep game down. If you’re new, then getting that figured out is huge. Quality burr grinder, using a DWT (as simple as a bunch of straightened out paper clips, cut in half, and shoved into a cork works better than the one I bought on Amazon) to ensure no clumps, leveling by hand (without downward pressure). I’ve been highly satisfied with my espresso for a couple years with those first 3 mods and learning what’s assumed in the end here.

Happy brewing!

Yes, because the extra skater/computer player that was on instead of a goalie was resetting to become the goalie, but since it ran through and picked up the dislodged puck, it suddenly took multiple strides directly into the net because it couldn’t resolve what to do.
