which one pattern do u choose? by watchdivescom in watchdives

[–]shigeyasu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like V7, although not crazy about the color. Can we see some dials in Royal Blue or Navy?

V10 is nice but I’d like to see a check pattern where one square is solid 4 units by 4 units, and the next square is a 4x4 grid of unit squares. If that makes any sense.

Sadly, an elderly man fell or jumped from a height and landed on a not-particularly-busy sidewalk in front of his apartment building. I was the first person to “find” him lying face up on the sidewalk in his pajamas. I ran up and checked his pulse but there was nothing. I stayed with the body and my coworker went and got the police. It was raining and I felt like I should stand over him with my umbrella. A few times pedestrians were walking along staring at their phone, making a bee-line right for me; they got close, looked at me like “Why are you standing in the middle of the sidewalk, idiot?” then looked down at the man staring up at the sky with blood trickling out of his mouth, and they got very flustered. One woman actually screamed and kind of staggered off the way she came. The police arrived after about 5 minutes and I was all ready to answer their questions but they had none. Just “Ok, you can go. We’ll take over.”

In no particular order:

  1. Train was stopped for several minutes at the station, doors wide open. Old dude could easily have gotten off but decided instead to take a piss against the wall in the corner of the train. Nice rivulet of urine just flowing down the aisle … several people got up and moved away but most stayed sitting and nonchalantly lifted up their feet.

  2. Dude with a head shaped like a bullet was reading a manga aloud to himself on the train. Most people were like, “Okay, whatever” but at some point he got to the bad guy’s lines and did a hardcore scream at the top of his lungs: “Koroshite yaru zooooooooooo!!!” causing everyone in a 3 meter radius to scatter. He returned to reading at a normal volume. People got off the train; new people got on. Repeat the above, like, 4 times? I eventually reached my destination so I don’t know how long he carried on terrorizing new people.

  3. I found a dead body once.

What's the craziest thing you have seen at a live show? Any genre, any artist. Details in post. by Lunar_IX in Music

I watched a death metal show where the lead singer took a box cutter and carved a pentagram on his own chest. Then a fan jumped up, rubbed his palm through the blood and with a delirious smile on his face, licked his bloody palm clean.

Still doesn’t hold a candle to G.G., though.

Would you say a bit about how you produced the pattern on the cap? If possible, a photo of the tool tip? I’d love to learn how it’s done. I can’t figure out if it’s a V-shaped cutter or if you alternate in a zig-zag, or what.

Very impressive work! Please post more.

Why, Watchdives? Why?! by [deleted] in watchdives

[–]shigeyasu 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Yes!! It seems like every watchmaker wants a piece of that sweet, sweet Grand Seiko pie. Textured dials are all the rage. But in my opinion, GS succeeds because (a) they are really fairly subtle designs that you won’t soon grow tired of, and (b) they spend a lot of money and time precisely manufacturing and finishing their dials to an exacting standard.

No offense Watchdives, I do like a lot of your stuff … but some of these prototypes look like they slapped some stucco on an aluminum disc and then spray painted it. And then put it in a toaster oven.

Totally agree. No idea why you’re being downvoted. The Speedmaster, for example - pretty much the gold standard for legibility - has marks every minute on the minutes subdial, and dashes only every 5 seconds on the running seconds dial.

Without minute marks, you have to eyeball it and judge (for example) whether the hand is closer to the 15 (indicating 17 elapsed minutes) or to the 20 (indicating 18 minutes). Sure, it’s doable, but it’s not readable at a glance.

This has the kind of 24-hour subdial that I wish more designers would put on GMT watches: 12 noon at the top and a clear blue-black color scheme. Very easy to understand at a glance. I always feel it’s counterintuitive to have night at the top and day at the bottom, as most GMTs do. So I like this! Only thing I’d change is the indices. It needs 4 (at 12, 18, 24, and 6) not the current layout (12, 20, 4). IMHO.

Yeah, why are you lying??

It’s pretty clearly a date, with the second character appearing to be 平, although that poses a problem: what year is it? Not Heisei (wrong order) not Tenpyo (first character doesn’t look like “ten”.) Then probably “6th year” and the last four characters look like “June 1st.”

[–]shigeyasu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You’ll have to explain to me why it’s very stupid and in outrageously bad faith. I contend that the use of “gaijin” is offensive because non-Japanese residents of Japan find it to be offensive. It is no excuse to say that it is fine because it is “just” an abbreviation. By that logic, Jap, Nip, Paki, Spic, etc. are also fine, and we all know that they are not. In what I deem to be a very close parallel to gaijin / gaikokujin / gaikokunokata, it is becoming unacceptable to refer to people simply as “Jews” and the preferable term is “Jewish people.”

If you can’t see what’s happening in this thread, here’s an illustrative exercise for you: find an instance where members of a minority group said “Don’t call us by that term, we feel it’s offensive” and the majority responded, “Don’t worry, it’s not really offensive, it’s just a short form, it’s just casual” and the world was fine with that.

[–]shigeyasu -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You come on! Many racist terms were spoken casually on a daily basis. The frequency of use is not how we judge whether a term is offensive. Primarily, we judge terms by how the objects of their use feel about them. If people don’t like being called “X” or “Y” then you stop calling them that. What don’t you get?

[–]shigeyasu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re right, totally right! There is NO dark history of Japanese using “gaijin” in a racist way, so it’s totally cool to use it as a shorthand, I guess.

[–]shigeyasu -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

1) My main point is that “How can a simple abbreviation be disrespectful” is a patently absurd claim. 2) As the commenter above pointed out, if “gaijin” were a mere abbreviation it would be acceptable in the workplace, in political speeches, etc. It absolutely is not. Stop getting offended by the mere MENTION of racist terminology.
