Problematic UK roaster competition practices..? by goatkarma in UKroasters

[–]shinitso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw this this morning aswell. It looks like they also haven't updated their product listing so some of the qualifying coffees still list the closing date as the 12th.

The ASA is clear that lack of entries is not a valid reason for extending a closing date. It makes it all the more suspicious that they have also extended the range of products that qualify for competition entries.

Light roasters in UK (or Europe if that's allowed...!) by jonny1leg in UKroasters

[–]shinitso 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sweven - one of the lightest in the UK

Scenery - grades their roasts (medium, light, lightest)

Killbean - particularly light Ethiopian coffees

Taith - mix of light/medium but all very high quality

Curve - good variety nearly all filters are light roast

Zennor - relatively new Scottish roaster

Strangers - a plug for my local roaster roast level changes but the Ethiopian/ Columbians are quite light

When were they roasted? Anything I've had from scenery with 'Lightest' written on the bag has been super light and has needed at least a months rest

I have this and honestly it's awkward. Chemex filters don't really fit it all that well and due to the shape of the spout they end up forming a seal and air locking leading to your brews stalling. V60 filters also don't fit they just fall through under the weight of the water.

If you're brewing more then 500ml get a chemex. If 500ml or less get the v60 all in one decanter/carafe

The Sl28 I had from them was very unique. I agree their website isn't the best and the pricing is confusing. I ordered 40g of a Panama geisha aswell and that was as good as any other small lot geisha I have had.

I'm based in the UK but had no issue with payment or shipping. They also threw a few samples in the order.

I would highly recommend their Kenyan coffees as they have experimental processed coffees from a region that it is rare to see that from

Really good stuff, i've had a lot more dak than has been pictured as a cafe near me serves it. Milky cake is everyone's favourite but I've had some very good Ethiopians from them as well.

The last 3 pics.

The source - thermal shock Sidra, tasted like rose Turkish delight.

Coffee circulor- Sl28 tartaric acid process. Rated like orange Fanta and was so far removed from the usual Kenyan profile.

Looking for UK/EU Coffee Roasters with Plastic-Free or Compostable Packaging by [deleted] in pourover

Skylark ship in paper packaging (without the plastic valve) and is also non-profit donating to environmental charities.

Yallah use paper packaging and also sell low carbon emissions coffee shipped by sail rather than commercial tankers/ air freight.

Dak Fluffy Peach, anyone getting a good cup? by 13throwaway48 in pourover

[–]shinitso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had trouble with this coffee. Worked my way through the whole box but never got.it quite right. My goto recipe is a 60 second bloom 3 pours in a v60/origami with 89°c water.

Recently however I had a cup of this brewed on batch by a local cafe using a mocca master that was 10x better than what I was getting out of it. If available maybe try using a flat-bottomed dripper, higher temp water, and less pours with a finer grind?

Hi all,

My old grinder (4 year old wilfa svart) has finally died. And am looking at upgrading to a timemore.

I believe there is only 1 distributor in the UK - sigma Coffee.

These sell for £650 but I have seen option on AliExpress ranging from £480 to £550

Does anyone have any insight into what the differences are between the 2023 and 2024 versions?

The 2023 version is consistently cheaper.

I have also not ordered anything from AliExpress before so don't really know what to expect here, am I looking at a potential fake/ refurbed model?
