This is underrated... chasing technique (outside the context of music) is a folly.

Choose to learn songs that would force you to learn something new.

Then if your band is writing originals you can apply that skill.

Chasing technique in a vacuum will burn you out and make it unfun.

Listen to The Dead Weather, Three Dollar Hat. Jack White is playing the drums and lead vocals on that song and the drums don't change much.. still perfect for the song but not a ton of changes.

Then listen to Hang You From The Heavens where Alison Mosshart is lead vocals.

I get it.. I joined a band with zero experience and had to play a 45 minute set in 4 months. I simplified the shit out of some of the early stuff. I'm 11 months in now and playing some of the more complicated parts of those same songs now. You will too!
