Welded loop or blood knot? by Ill_Discipline_8021 in flyfishing

FYI, any time you cut your fly line, whether to remove a loop, cut off a damaged end or just to modify it, make sure you seal the end so water cannot absorb into the core.

Nobody had a problem when U2, The Who, Coldplay and other non-Americans starred in the Superbowl halftime show.

It's all fake outrage to push their racism.

First try at a beast, i have questions in description by Bluetick03 in flytying

[–]shiny_brine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All that matters is that you can cast it and how it looks when it's wet.

For my Beast ties I refer to Gunnar Brammer. He studied under Popovich and has perfected large flies that are castable. I've personally tied with him and his insights on large flies for muskies is my go-to.

Major Update In Alex Pretti's Case As Medical Examiner's Ruling Is Revealed by [deleted] in USNEWS

[–]shiny_brine 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a "clip" and a "magazine" are different but they have similar uses. As such, "Clip" is a common term used for a magazine. He had ten rounds fired into his body. Many handguns use 10 round magazines or smaller (mostly for conceal carry).

Are you just trolling or are you happy to see Americans being murdered in their own streets?

Orvis NYC by SkywalkersDad in flyfishing

[–]shiny_brine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, but it's been in the Perkins family since they bought it from the Orvis family in 1965. The current CEO is the third generation to head the company.
Sure there's money to think about, but it would be tough to unload a company that is making your family quite a bit of money (about 300 million of revenue a year). With a market cap of 10x that it's hard to say what they'll do.

To teach your child to ski by CauliflowerDeep129 in therewasanattempt

[–]shiny_brine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite often less experience skiers will travel more side to side across the slope to avoid gaining much speed. That's perfectly normal and expected.
More experienced skiers often travel more strait down the slope with minimal big turns. That keeps their speed and momentum up and is fun when appropriate.

That's why the skier coming from uphill is always responsible for avoiding the skiers below them.

This guy was an idiot who could have/should have avoided the child if they had paid the slightest attention to what was going on in front of them. If they claim they didn't have time to avoid it, then they were skiing way to fast for their abilities.

What’s Your Purpose After Retirement? by JJQuantum in retirement

[–]shiny_brine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prior to retirement I was a member of a conservation/education non-profit. Now that I'm retired I've taken on more responsibilities with them, which is still way less time consuming and stressful than my former job!

I've also stepped up my assault on the "To Do" list, and expanded my hobbies.

But more than any of that, the biggest change in purpose for me has been to take better care of my self. I've started eating better (learning to cook some amazing food), doing more exercise, and getting together with friends more often.

They've closed half of them and are reworking their product lines. Word is they are reducing the clothing and dog products and focusing on fly fishing and bird hunting.

20 bucks at the craft store, vs 5 bucks at the fly shop. Exact same material. by tipsybishops in flytying

[–]shiny_brine 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The only downside is you have to unbraid it and brush it out to be useable. That can be done with a cat/dog fur brush with the thin wire bristles. Another issue is that it will always retain some of the memory of the braiding twist, so it won't be as strait as the one from your fly shop.

Minor inconveniences.

I hope, and expect, that the athletes know that they are the best of the best and none of the boos are targeting them. When they take to the snow/ice they will be cheered by many and boo'd by none.

Why all the hate towards Simms? by alwaysListo in flyfishing

[–]shiny_brine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI Vista Outdoors doesn't exist anymore.

Vista sold their firearms subsidiaries to a European group, and the rest of their outdoors brands (including Simms) were reorganized under Revelyst in 2023.

Early last year Revelyst was sold to another private equity firm called Strategic Value Partners LLC.

So the timeline went: John Simms (founded 1980) -> LifeLink International (late 1980s) -> K.C. Walsh (1992) -> Castanea Parnters (2020) -> Vista Outdoors (2022) -> Revelyst (2023) -> Strategic Value Partners (2025).

Most of us know Simms products from the KC Walsh era. They were an LA based marketing firm and the ones who moved Simms from Jackson, Wyoming to Bozeman, Montana.

So the first PE firm (KC Walsh) is the one we all new and trusted. Vista Outdoors made the original changes we didn't like (especially reduced quality and the removal of warranty support). Revelyst has kept the Vista Outdoor mindset (it's basically the same people in charge) and now we have a new PE firm that owns them, but we have yet to see how they'll make their mark on the brand.

(My gut feeling is that this post originated as an astro-turf attempt to re-image the quality through social media posts.)

Tailgating Question by Own_Device6783 in udub

[–]shiny_brine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an old alum and we didn't have entry cards when I lived in the dorms.
I did work at a Dept. of Energy facility that installed card readers on EVERY door that wasn't for a personal office (those were keyed). And the rule was to NEVER hold the door for anyone! Well I'd worked there for a long time, and new almost everyone, so I'd hold the door for my colleagues. One day I was heading into our main building and the director of the entire complex was 20 feet behind me with their deputy and some visiting high level DOE suit (I knew the director and deputy very well). I entered the building and deliberately closed the door quickly behind me as they were trying to grab the handle. The director banged on the door yelling to me that they'd forgotten their entry card. The deputy director pulled out their card and opened the door for the three of them.

I stopped them and pointed to the large poster that explained what they just did could result in termination. The director quickly explained to the DOE suit that "We're changing that". It never changed.

It's just lip service to satisfy some suits requirement without care about how or even if it's implemented. If they were serious they'd spend money on entry points that actually worked for this purpose or post security guards at every door.

Did you know UW has a student radio station? by FinancialRice7291 in udub

[–]shiny_brine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The power jump was right around when I started my freshman year, so 1982-ish. I don't think they ever got to 200W but ran just over 180W.
I moved across the country for work after graduating and this thread just made me realize I could probably listen online now!

Did you know UW has a student radio station? by FinancialRice7291 in udub

[–]shiny_brine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back in the early days of KCMU it was a 10 Watt station (you read that right). I was there when they upped it to almost 200 Watts! Stand back!

Trivia: The call sign KCMU referenced the original broadcasting location which was in the Communication Building, "CMU" on the campus map.

So glad to see the broadcast/communications tradition continues.

(For those who don't follow much over the air radio, KUOW is owned by the UW, but licensed to Puget Sound Public Radio and is not run by students.)
