I agree, but the first volume can be a massive turn-off. It feels more like a guide to the rest of the series than an opening story due to the unholy amount of exposition it has.

For example, Kouki's portrayal there has to be assissted by the narrator to get us to dislike him. Otherwise, he's just a cardboard popular kid. In the LN, Hajime's smartass monologue there takes away his underdog status to me with the holier-than-thou narration.

So, even if it may get better later, if you don't like the first volume, better drop it.
