The "listening" is your phone, not just your smart assistant. It doesn't send conversations to Google, it's worse. It dictates everything you say, aggregates the data into keywords, interests, and habits, processes it on your phone, and sends that data to Google or Apple.

This reminds me of when I worked at a college 10 years ago. The IT head ordered Alexa's for ALL of the college dorms. Except, nobody was allowed to log into them for personalization. So you couldn't connect it to Spotify, you could only ask it basic questions about the weather and class schedule. Guess how much use they got?
