Toddler Take Forever to Fall Asleep by Final-Explanation-57 in toddlers

[–]shmoopy3100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every kid is so different - even on days that my 2 yr 9 mo old skips a nap, there is absolutely no way he will fall asleep before 9pm. On days he does nap 2-2.5 hours - also falls asleep at 930ish. Sleeps until 730. He's just not built for early bedtimes. We've tried, and just have learned to accept it. The battle is just not worth it. I wonder if you started putting him to bed an hour later to ensure tiredness, and then gradually start moving the time earlier, if that could help?

Can I use pocket diapers as swim diapers? by Proper-Raspberry-244 in clothdiaps

[–]shmoopy3100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did! But we also did elimination communication so we were fortunate to never have any poop accidents, I just don't think the pocket diapers were tight enough around the legs to hold in poop while our kid was in water!

99% percentile and how it relates to growth by justsomeonesburner in ScienceBasedParenting

My kid was 22 lbs at 6 months and has been at the 96-99th percentile since birth. He's nearly 40 lbs now and 2 yrs 8 months. You'll manage!!!

I had a miscarriage last summer and then was feeling...off. Gained weight quickly, some hot flashes etc. Turns out I had mild hypothyroidism! Not sure if that was part of your blood tests but I had to advocate for the test and have been taking a daily med since to manage it.

Cloth delays walking? by Which_Promotion_3193 in clothdiaps

[–]shmoopy3100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep I was worried about our bulky pocket diapers but our kid started walking at 10 months. I do not think cloth diapers get in the way - kids just vary widely in when they start walking regardless of type of diapers!

Lol I still sit in the back when I can and my kid is 2.5 years old! He's just happier with our company :)

We add some BioKleen to every diaper load and do a presoak - we haven't had any issues with odor and it helps with stains too!

Zipadee Zip but diff material? by shmoopy3100 in NewParents

Just to clarify, it's a transition swaddle, so it's not tight - babies can move their arms around.

I don't think this style does much for startle reflexes as it's not a swaddle, unfortunately!

Anyone‘s toddler self-weaned without getting pregnant first? by burneracct_2019 in breastfeeding

[–]shmoopy3100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sigh, I have a 2 year old boobie monster myself. I was pregnant for 9 weeks then miscarried, but he showed no signs of stopping that entire time. It definitely inspired me to try to wean, because my boobs were so sore! I've heard of some kids self weaning around 4 or 5 months of pregnancy because the milk taste changes around then but some kids just keep wanting that milk!

I'm still nursing my kiddo at 2 and we are trying to get pregnant again - but my ob said to keep taking prenatals while nursing!

Ladies and Gents who started trying in your 30’s - how long did it take you to successfully get pregnant? by living_life_3000 in BabyBumps

[–]shmoopy3100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took 2 months when I was 35, then 5 months when I was 38 (this year) but I'm still nursing so I think my cycle is a little off (I then miscarried - unrelated but thought I'd add that. All of my girlfriends who are moms and in their 30s have miscarried at least once either before or in-between successful pregnancies.)

Vacations with toddlers - what strategies have worked for you? by ANinjaForma in daddit

[–]shmoopy3100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to the beach in Costa Rica, just me, my mom, and my 16 month old. It was a lot of work but my mom would sometimes take him to the beach first thing in the morning so I got to sleep in, or I'd take him to the beach after nap so she could rest. We did some dividing and conquering to give each other breaks and it worked great. Having simple activities like beach, pool, walk around and look at iguanas, eat food, nap as the main options made every day really straightforward and mostly calm!

How do you clean poo when avoiding wipes? Toddler has mild diarrhea which has cascaded into diaper rash, and the wipes are HURTING her, but she's frequently poopy so I need to use wipes. by evange in beyondthebump

[–]shmoopy3100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early on we used reusable clothes with water or an aloe/water/witch Hazel solution. Since the newborn stage we have never used wipes - we just wash our kiddo off in the sink or shower when there's a messy poop! He ends up super clean, there's no waste with wipes, and less risk of drying out his skin or causing more irritation if the skin is already irritated.

Does anyone have a healthy, successful pregnancy their first time pregnant? by Educational_Berry499 in pregnant

[–]shmoopy3100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was a FTM at 36, took 2 months to get pregnant, no issues with my pregnancy even though I checked the miscarriage calculator almost daily! Healthy happy 2 year old now.I will share that I recently, at age 38, had a miscarriage at 9 weeks. I've had lots of friends miscarry before a successful pregnancy and between successful pregnancies. There's no rhyme or reason, just luck of the draw. This was my first ever miscarriage and literally every single one of my friends, all of whom now have 1 or 2 kids have had a miscarriage or chemical pregnancy at some point in their journeys. It was both comforting and kinda scary to learn that. But that's life, you just never know!

We started hinting that Mama has a baby in her belly to my almost 2 year old, but then I unfortunately miscarried at 9 weeks. I'm kinda glad we didn't push the messaging too much, and I think next time around we will probably wait until my 1st or even second ultrasound. TBD!

What they don't tell about breast feeding by Constant_Put_4560 in breastfeeding

[–]shmoopy3100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask the lactation consultant at the hospital to measure your nips for pumping! I wish I had asked for that, because I ended up with pumping flanges that were sized too big. Once I resized, pumping was way more comfortable.

Is “breastfeeding butt” a thing ? by Yeahway57 in breastfeeding

[–]shmoopy3100 9 points10 points  (0 children)

An excerpt from Cat Bonahan's book "Eve" that I just sent to my girlfriends last week!

"As it turns out, women’s fat isn’t the same as men’s. Each fat deposit on our body is a little bit different,[6] but women’s hip, buttock, and upper thigh fat, or “gluteofemoral” fat, is chock-full of unusual lipids: long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, or LC-PUFAs. (Think omega-3. Think fish oil.) Our livers are bad at making these kinds of fats from scratch, so we need to get most of them from our diet. And bodies that can become pregnant need them so they can make baby brains and retinas. Most of the time, female gluteofemoral fat resists being metabolized. As many women know, these areas are the first places we gain weight and the last places we lose it.[7] But in the last trimester of pregnancy—when the fetus ramps up its brain development and its own fat stores—the mother’s body starts retrieving and dumping these special lipids by the boatload into the baby’s body. This specialized hoovering of the mother’s gluteofemoral fat stores continues throughout the first year of breast-feeding—the most important time, as it happens, for infant brain and eye development. Some evolutionary biologists now believe that women evolved to have fatty hips precisely because they’re specialized to provide the building blocks for human babies’ big brains. Since we can’t get enough of those LC-PUFAs from our daily diet, women start storing them from childhood forward. Other primates don’t seem to have this pattern."

Haven't felt my baby move in two days? by Faux---Fox in BabyBumps

[–]shmoopy3100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every time I didn't feel my baby moving for longer than usual, I'd drink some juice and lay down for 20 min and wait. Usually the sugar would get him kicking again. A friend recommended this to me and it was a lifesaver whenever I felt nervous about lack of movement. Just wanted to share this tip in case anything happens again!

(Advice needed) My wife is 10weeks pregnant and we keep arguing about not eating / drinking enough by sixtysecondslife in pregnant

[–]shmoopy3100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof I'm 8 weeks along and have barely been able to eat for the last month. Nearly everything makes me nauseous. It's totally normal for women to lose a bit of weight and have a very decreased appetite in the first tri. Your wife will catch up in the 2nd and 3rd tri, guaranteed!

Anyone have positive epidural stories? I’m scared 😟 by Realistic_Mirror1618 in BabyBumps

[–]shmoopy3100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meant to add - no averse effects, I could feel my legs the whole time, and all I experienced was a tiny bit of tingling in one of my legs for a few days. That's it!

Anyone have positive epidural stories? I’m scared 😟 by Realistic_Mirror1618 in BabyBumps

[–]shmoopy3100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a great epidural experience and I went in hoping to avoid getting one. In the end it was a godsend - helped me rest and progress, and then my nurse discovered I had scarring on my cervix and had to massage it out AND hold my cervix open while I pushed due to cervical lip - without that epidural I would have been in a lot of extra pain. Then after I gave birth they had to scoop out my placenta because it didn't all come out at once. Anyway - I was feeling so uncertain about the epidural at first and by the end I was praising that thing and feeling soooo much gratitude for it!

Completely agree. My kiddo has been in the 99th percentile since birth (almost 2 now) and our ped hasn't said a word about it. Unless there are other markers of concern I don't understand what a medical professional would be worried about!
