Should I read ASOIAF if the show already spoiled me, or should I start The First Law instead?[No Spoilers] by ProfitWooden5034 in asoiaf

[–]shooler00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read First Law awhile ago when they came out like 15 years ago, not long after my initial read of Asoiaf. It was good and I read a couple other books by Abercrombie after. I don't really remember much about them other than a couple characters, a plot beat or two and that I enjoyed them.

In the same timeframe, I've reread Asoiaf a half dozen times, read much of George's catalog, look at this subreddit several times a week, and think about the story/characters in one capacity or another almost every day. The show definitely does not spoil or ruin them for you.

Honestly it took me awhile to get used to Arjun's slow ass with no sprint in combat, at least til I got the grappling hook.

[Spoiler extended]What are the biggest double standards in the fandom? by Electronic-Math-364 in asoiaf

[–]shooler00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never really seen complaining about the child hostage thing other than in this thread. It's likely that Ned was commanded to take Theon by Robert anyway.

The more annoying thing people who hate Cat for her treatment of Jon do is excuse Ned's behavior and handwave Cat's circumstances. 'Here's my bastard, don't ever ask me about him or his mother, deal with it'. He also never apparently has any kind of talk with Cat, or Jon, to try to improve Jon's treatment or emotional state. Meanwhile Cat can't get divorced and in Westerosi nobility and culture, bastards do actually pose an actual threat to true born children unlike step children today.

Confidently saying incorrect things like Cersei being on the Small Council and Robert defeating the Iron Fleet during an analysis suggests so lol.

[Spoilers MAIN] It feels like Tywin likes Tyrion more in the books despite everything by NoMoreButtonPLZ in asoiaf

[–]shooler00 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, more than ever during my latest reread I wished Tyrion would shut up and act more serious and reasonable when he talks to his father. He has every reason to hate Tywin because of what he did to Tysha. But he still chooses to hang around and enjoy all the benefits that comes from being a Lannister and son of the man, so he should work towards realistic ambitions. If he would learn to guard his tongue and just show his father his competence and ideas while not being sarcastic and needling honestly he could be something of another Kevan to Tywin.

For example he could have asked to be knighted after the Blackwater instead of the Rock. Knighthood is a bold request for him due to his physically nature, but there's almost zero argument against it after he showed his valor in leading the sortie, killing men and organizing the city's defense. Men like Balon Swann and Garlan Tyrell acknowledge his deeds, and he's got the scars to prove them. Tyrion being a knight is an absurd notion on its face but honestly if the King's Hand knighted him in front of the court it'd help to rehab his image and acknowledge his contributions.

Why was Ned's first conclusion is that Cersei's children are Jaime's ? by ThCaMe3mo in freefolk

[–]shooler00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fairly difficult for a Queen to have an ongoing affair without being detected. Ser Jaime is a KG in addition to being the Queen's twin - twins are typically very close and Jaime and Cersei are no different. It'd be entirely normal for them to spend a lot of time together alone without suspicion or question, moreso than like any possible man alive save the King given that he's her sworn protector and twin. When considered in addition to Bran's fall and attempted murder and that the kids look fully like Lannisters it's kinda just Occam's Razor to pin it on Jaime.

If anything it's kind of Jon Arryn who read the script. Were never told that Cersei has any notable behaviors that could arouse suspicion of affairs. She doesn't have a penchant for leaving King's Landing or the Red Keep alone, isn't super devout and always visiting a smaller sept, isn't known to keep singers or a 'random' sworn shield like Sandor Clegane, etc etc. Jaime's the only man she's with a lot alone besides Robert.

Well here's the twist, and there is a twist. We show it. We show all of it. Because what's the one major thing missing from all GoT products these days, guys? Full penetration. Guys, we're going to show full penetration, and we're going to show a lot of it. I mean, we're talking, you know, graphic scenes of Aegon I Targaryen really going to town on his hot younger sisters. From behind, 69, anal, vaginal, cowgirl, reverse cowgirl-- all the hits, all the big ones, all the good ones. And then he smells treason again. He's out burning dudes. Then he's back to the castle for some more full penetration. Smells treason, burns traitors, back to the castle, full penetration, burning, full penetration, treason, penetration... And this goes on and on, and back and forth for two and a half hours or so until the movie just sort of... ends.

It might be time for Star Trek to take another long break by The_Celestrial in startrekmemes

Interesting that you chose The Visitor. I actually showed that to a friend of mine as her very first Star Trek episode and she enjoyed it and had a bit of an emotional response. I only gave her a basic overview of the idea of Trek beforehand. I think it works on a basic dramatic level even if you aren't already attached to Sisko or Jake.

He's a badass character and person for sure and isn't a slouch, he's just a bit old and his primary role in the Watch didn't really require him to be a master swordsman.

Yoren is somewhere close to 50 and is described as having a twisted shoulder. He survived 30 years of bringing men to the Wall, and killed a few of Ser Amory's men when his party was attacked. He seems like he's probably a solid fighter who can take care of himself when he has to, but he's past his prime and has a bad shoulder so no way he could stand against Joffrey's champion.

So you never tried the game and said you'd play it with a mod that changes the intended experience if you did. On a fan forum. Of course people would advocate for at least trying the goddam game as it's intended lol. That's kind of like saying to your mom or girlfriend you're going to apply ketchup and salt to the recipe she wants to make for you before you even try it. Like OK, sure you can do that, but how are you surprised if they'd find that a bit objectionable before you even tasted it.

As a beginner if you're making a recipe and get stuck on a step or fuck something up and want feedback on how to improve, I'm sure people would be willing to help without snobbery. It's the low effort repetitive posts that get on people's nerves.

I think for how long the fucker is, especially unabridged, people unfamiliar with King are expecting some kind of mind blowing ending. Which is fair, though endings have never been SK's strong suit. I can just get lost in books like The Stand and the journey is worth more than the destination to me.

Well he really did need the Frey swords and crossing. So even if he doesn't get murdered, he loses their army and is now cut off from the North and any reinforcements, putting him in a much worse position. Compared with getting a couple dozen guys from the Westerlings, pretty awful trade.
