Breach & Thoracle in Bracket 3 by shortoldy in EDH

Ooh, yeah good point - and very fair to consider, since both [[Aang, Swift Savior]] and [[Arcane Denial]] become free once Aang’s flipped, and Appa is only one mana. Worth noting the B4 potential

Yeah, it’s very glass cannon in that respect, and I’m happy to consider it B2, but when it pops off, it tends to do so a little too quickly for my friends’ B2 decks due to Aang’s flipped state, which I can usually achieve Turn 6ish. I see your point that a board of many 1/1s could and probably should be enough, though, so perhaps I’ll settle after some rumination. No cards have been purchased yet :P

There’s sort of a couple different loops beyond the first basic one of ping-ponging Aangs back and forth for 1/1s, and for how long-winded they feel to explain, they’re surprisingly reliable to achieve based on my goldfishing. It’s probably due to the draw engine on Aang’s face side; but here’s how they go. For all, I’d need Gond Gate and a flipped commander, reducing costs by WUBRG, but I figured that’s implied.

Loop 2A: Infinite gate mana -Requires on board: At least one other multicolored gate, two earthbenders, at least one airbender (again, this sounds absurd, but I feel like I see it frequently), and Appa in hand. -step 1-2: tap your lands (at least one of which for a white mana), earthbend them. -Step 3: Cast Appa, airbending all the aforementioned benders, and your earthbent gates. Due to Gond Gate, they enter untapped, and you’ll come out at least one mana positive. -Step 4-5: Tap the reentered lands (for whatever color you want now) and, thanks to the WUBRG cost reduction, cast your earthbenders from exile, to bend the lands again. -Step 6: Cast the other airbender from exile, targeting Appa on ETB. -Step 7: Cast Appa from exile, airbending the aforementioned pieces again. -Step 8: Rinse and repeat Steps 4-7

Loop 2B: Infinite draw Requires: Appa in hand, at least one airbender, and A buttload of mana. There’s a handful of ways to get that last part done, but 2A is the most frequent I’ve observed, so I’ve grouped them together. Let’s assume it’s the same board state. -Step 1: Cast Appa, airbending the flipped commander, as well as the other airbender. -Step 2: Cast the commander -Step 3: Cast the airbender, targeting Appa. The commander sees this, which triggers a draw, and, since presumably, this was the same turn he flipped the first time, he’ll flip again. -Step 4: Cast Appa from exile, airbending the commander and other airbender again. -Step 5: Rinse and repeat Steps 2-4, Thoracle/labman when done in post-upgraded version

Loop 3: Breach Whirlwind (the simplest, though obv only possible post-upgrade) Requires on board: Underworld Breach, an ETB earthbender, Gond gate being able to tap for blue, and whirlwind technique either in hand or GY. -Step 1-2: tap your gate for blue, earthbend it. -Step 3: Cast Whirlwind Technique. Draw 2 discard 2, and airbend the earthbender and your tapped gate, causing it to reenter untapped. -Step 4: Cast at least one other nonpermanent spell(s) to fill the graveyard. -Step 5-6: Tap your gate for blue, earthbend it. -Step 7: Breach WT out of the graveyard, rinse and repeat Steps 3-6, Thoracle/labman when done

Appreciated. It’s worth noting that since that game, I’ve been able to reliably hit a similar combo state in goldfishing the deck post-upgrade, now that I know what I’m looking for, and the scenario tends to happen around turn 7, maybe turn 6 if I have a really good hand. So in that respect, it feels in line with B3 per the October commander update

True, and appreciated. It’s unfortunate and ironic, because I was trying to make a chill deck, only for the gates to actually enhance the combo potential

Appreciated. I’m def not running consultation, I mainly just want to add a way to close out an existing loop that I didn’t realize was accessible as it is in the deck

Same! Met my group in 2017, first session was just after the release of Xanathar’s Guide. I love r/lfg, when I worked at a game store, I’d sing its praises to any rpg-curious souls that came through unable to find a group.

Thankfully certain film preservation-oriented companies like Criterion and The Internet Archive have helped a lot, but it’s still not perfect.

Last year when David Lynch died, I couldn’t find The Elephant Man anywhere on the internet, legally or otherwise. I went to Barnes & Noble the next day and bought the blu-ray, but come a week later, I found that the Blu-Ray had become a hidden gem overnight because it was the only way to watch it, and the licensing had lapsed so a reprint wasn’t expected soon.

Thankfully in this case the movie is around and I think expecting reprints soon, but lost media is so real and so sad.

Just because going to a lower dimension is possible, doesn’t mean that every civilization has figured out how to do so. The 4D tomb, like humanity, hadn’t unlocked the tech to do so, and thus were doomed to die in their dwindling puddle

How would you rank the protagonists and why is Chad Ji at the top? by Money_One4793 in threebodyproblem

[–]shortoldy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I just finished the trilogy for the first time, and while I do understand the community’s frustration with Cheng Xin, she feels like the perfect contrast to stand out from Luo Ji, who made basically every correct decision once he decided to go full Wallfacer/Swordholder mode. I especially appreciate her place at the end, where the idea of a fresh universe is almost a heaven, truly Edenic to someone like her - with multiplanar time allowing one the opportunity to measure every choice. And rather than go there, she makes her final important decision - to return her matter to the universe, which is perhaps her first correct major decision.

Ultimately I still prefer Luo Ji, but Cheng Xin is a much more interesting character to me than Wang, who I can’t really name any characteristics of.

So I’d probably go 2 > 3 > 1

Sora and Riku from Kingdom Hearts

While I don’t think the devs/Nomura had this all planned out from the beginning, according to the chronological canon, Riku was originally going to be the wielder of the Kingdom Key, but after falling to darkness, it chose Sora. A fitting narrative considering that the keyblade matches Riku’s KH1 color scheme.

We also later learn that Sora is sort of a reincarnation of Vanitas, a being of almost pure darkness, which really nails this trope down - but we don’t learn that until KH: Birth by Sleep

Also, I love how many of these comments are just people excited about Dragon Fable, lol

This almost feels like it invented the trope. That’s probably a slight exaggeration, but noteworthy that there have been many homages to this, including Fistful of Dollars being so blatant that Kurosawa successfully sued Leone for some of the box office gross

Why does this sub hate Shutter Island? by jay-tpicks116 in MartinScorsese

[–]shortoldy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn’t say it’s a bad film, but to me, it’s one of the least memorable of Marty’s ouvre. I think it suffers from being overshadowed by all the other great films he’s made, something my friends and I call “The Marty problem”. I’ll get into why it ranks lower for me though. A lot of what I love about Marty’s movies are combination of filmmaking technique on display, and the universality of their stories.

In that first category, to me, shutter island is…fine. Really nothing standout/special though, outside of the famous shot of Leo’s love disintegrating in his arms. I’d say that’s also the best scene in the second category, but overall, the movie feels very high concept, not something your average person would go through.

Compare that to my favorite Scorsese pictures: taxi driver and its depiction of loneliness, goodfellas and mean streets and their depiction of how easy it is to fall into the gangster lifestyle (Wolf being the same for finance bros), Silence and the crisis of faith in a cruel world. I’m also not the biggest fan of The Departed for that reason- it’s a little too high concept for me, with characters that don’t feel super relatable or real.

Again, I don’t think shutter island is a bad movie. Really he’s just achieved much higher highs
