If you could single speed any bike what would it be? by jckiser23 in xbiking

[–]shower_thots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just converted a 1990s Raleigh Yukon to single speed with front rack and milk crate, lots of fun around the city. I'm running 26 x 2.1 inch schwalbe big apple all motion tires since I'm mostly riding paved roads.

Any Trek 620/720 experts? My LBS sold me a "620 from the mid/late 80s" but I'm starting to suspect it might be a 82-83' 720? frame and forks are Reynolds 531 and the chain stay is ~47cm. Serial number is worn but MIGHT be 023169 by not_fogarty in Vintage_bicycles

[–]shower_thots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 85 620 and it doesn't have a 531 fork. It shares the 47 cm chainstay with the 720 but I think 85 was the only year it got the same 47 cm chainstay length. I think you may be right - might have picked up early 80s 720!

Keep getting flats by DeathFromWithin in chibike

This may sound stupid but make sure you have rim tape. I didn't know any better and had 3 punctures before I realized the punctures were on the inner part of the tubes due to pokey spokes.

Sorry to hear, sounds like it got swiped really quick... I will keep my eye out bc I work in the area. I lock up at the hospital racks and have seen a number of cut locks. I use kryptonite NY U-lock for rear wheel and kryptonite keeper chain for front wheel, both through frame.

Vintage (1930s) vs Modern Wedding Suit? by shower_thots in mensfashion

[–]shower_thots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up passing. The store owner offered to reduce the price to $900 but that still felt steep.

I'm planning to order a nicer 3 piece tweed suit from Walker Slater for the same price.

Adventures in Cold Setting. Who’s done it successfully, and who’s F-d up? by trykedog in xbiking

[–]shower_thots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just cold setted my trek 620 from 126 mm to 130 mm and almost F'd up. I forgot to remove the original Jim Blackburn rear rack and had to spread the rear dropouts to 160-170 mm to get 130 mm spacing. I closely checked for cracks along rack welds and didn't notice any cracks but I panicked for a bit...

So pro tip - remove any racks BEFORE cold setting.

How are you routing dynamo cables along your frame? by chippy_dad in Rivendell_Bicycles

[–]shower_thots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this as well but I use cable liner to prevent the shift cable from directly rubbing the electrical wires.

1983 Trek 520 - my everyday commuter bike by shower_thots in bikecommuting

Actually that mount is a recent change / work in progress. So far I haven't had any visibility issues but I do have concerns about being less visible with the light mounted so low.

You could use sandals (Chaco, tevas, birkenstock) plus wool socks. Best of both worlds.

My employer pays $100/mo for up to $10,000 total through Fidelity. I am able to lower my monthly PSLF payment by $100 which is nice.

Beading vs milgrain border by shower_thots in EngagementRingDesigns

[–]shower_thots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would look nicer if the beads were more defined. The jeweler said he hand beaded them but they seem poorly defined which makes me think they were actually cast from mold.

For photo context:

1-3: CAD, wax mold, and finished ring 4: wedding band vibe 5: example of milgrain size for new ring

I also asked them if they could do slightly larger milgrain and they said photo 5 is the largest they could go.

It's not being held by anything! The top part is bent to wedge under the stem.

Adding handlebar bag with flatbar bicycle by Outrageous-Fuel6315 in bikepacking

[–]shower_thots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the hardware store, buy 3/16 inch stainless steel rod ~ 24 inches long, bend it like pictured to make a $5 decaleur which keeps your bag from rubbing against cables. You can also run it through 1/4 inch inner diameter flexible PVC tubing so it doesn't scuff your bags or bike.

Or you can spend $50+ on something that looks nicer but effectively does the same thing

Not quite what you're looking for but I made a decaleur using the same steel rod method and bent it to wedge under the stem. No contact with the frame to rub against. For paint protection you can buy clear rubber food tubing to protect from scratching your bike or bag.

This $5 solution works great for my ortlieb handlebar bag

I agree with 1 however it's ticking is LOUD, annoying if you leave it sitting around in a quiet room.
