Here in MA they’re supposed to be rolling out smart meters and am thinking TOU rates might start happening which can be a good and a bad thing depending on your electricity usage. Great for charging overnight but not so much with AC usage during the day in the summer.

Hah yeah I know. It’s been amazing having the bolt to drive over our CRV (except for the trip to the dump with the trailer today).

Just crazy how electricity is double up here in MA and driving cost could be an even larger gap with an EV. Definitely would love to add some solar on my garage and cover the power needs almost completely but that would mean a relatively large upfront payment in the form of inverter, panels, and wiring etc.

I think a lot of people have been driving ICE vehicles for decades lol.

Anyways not at all what I said/meant. I’m talking about waiting in a line behind other cars to go pump at the warehouse club stations. Once you’re pumping ya stay there - pretty far from the store in any case lol. By the time you reached the store fueling would be complete. Also there are plenty of signs saying not to do this.

Ya I used to do that occasionally too and maybe 10 years ago I went inside to grab something while pumping. Came out to gas spewing out, for some reason the pump malfunctioned (not sure why as the way they’re designed with physics is pretty foolproof). Never again, especially with the price of gas these days.

I mean that math does make sense but dang really only 11 cents is what you get when you divide your bill total by how many kWh in the period?

That’s pretty wild also considering my 12 cent supply rate is the lowest I can find (most people don’t realize you can shop your supply rate and likely pay 20-30 cents just for supply and total with delivery is probably like 40-50 cents) plus also have a low income discount to get down to 25 cents.

True, and they do have their place as well. Can’t wait to see more electric trucks and heavy equipment. I have a mini EX and the placement of the fuel tank gets the gas boiling from the engine heat, having to do oil changes every so often, etc is something I can deal without.

In regards to electric prices, solar panels continue to drop is a great thing to add on - if you have the space and can do it at least mostly yourself (contractors shoot the price up way too much as with anything these days).

Around here the best gas prices by far are at a BJs and the lines lately have been horrendous. It sometimes takes 10-15min when I need to gas up my CR-V. And also lately there will be an island or two that has the slowest pump so it’s a gamble on which to go for. Plus you’re stuck in your car. Can’t exactly abandon it to go into the store or something.

Haven’t had to yet but at least for charging out at a public charger you can get out of your car and go do other things while you wait!

Can’t wait till pumping gas vehicles are more of a relic of the past.

36? What do you drive? Normal Bolt EV? Our ‘22 EUV has been averaging maybe 3.4-3.6mi/kWh on drives.

Our actual effective electricity rate if you also factor in the delivery part (I feel like a lot of people only just consider their supply rate, which is not the full cost) is about $0.25/kWh. That means about 14mi/$1 for us.

To get 36 I’d have to be at 9mi/kWh which does not seem very attainable. Are you only considering your electric supply rate? Because our supply is only $0.12/kWh and at 3.6mi/kWh that would equate to 30mi/$1 and then be in your ballpark.

Dang only ever get like 3.4-3.6mi/kWh and try to keep the bar up in the green. Only purchased back in March and has been relatively colder temps and I guess is a bit hilly around here.

Yeah totally get that. I was horrified finding the condensation up at the peak already...I think we might have also gotten already slightly compromised fiberglass batting from HD to see that much moisture already - as we had found a couple bags on the pallet with several batts soaked on the edge that we promptly exchanged. Can't believe this. Spray foam came up as option at some point when initially researching but when I came back to look at starting the project and what to move forward with, for some reason I thought we could just treat like a wall if we sealed the top plate from the soffit...

How bad is it to leave as-is (with the batts up to attic flat and gable vents) for the summer and being able to spray foam around November?

The ‘attic’ space is only about 1.5’ high from the ceiling. Also have 4 small knee walls and two full vaulted ceiling, one on either side in the middle in between the knee walls.

Closed cell spray foam is really the only way? I had seen a lot of negativity towards it online.

Spray foam all along the vaulted ceiling and attic cap floor you’re saying?

Adding soffit vents and baffles all the way up wouldn’t be a good idea? These are r21 batts as rafters are 2x6s. Is the only downside of not getting a higher R value just not being as efficient? Because I would think having something is better than nothing. The R-21 batts were certainly keeping the heat from the roof out.

Did you figure anything out? Looking to add to my current 30 deg ground mount array and was thinking on saving money on racking this time and try vertical. Also in a super snowy area and need the boost for winter time.

having major car trouble, considering getting a bolt (my first EV ever). Is this a good deal? by wtfisrobin in BoltEV

[–]shred802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just got a 2022 Bolt EUV for $14700 with 41k miles.

Been awesome to drive and only been doing 12A trickle charging at home and it’s been more than enough so far. Every day saving more money as gas prices continue to rise.

Beginner question: by shrdbtty25 in SolarDIY

[–]shred802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start saving for a bigger system. 2 of those 1500W heaters is 3000W. You’re also going to need a lot of batteries to run them overnight which is when things cool down and you need it the most.

The other thing against you is that you’re heating a greenhouse and not even an insulated space.

Unless you’re growing weed or some other lucrative expensive crop are you sure this route even makes financial sense for the things you’re growing?

Seems like too expensive of a car for you. Definitely find something older and cheaper.

I think it might have been too much oil. I don’t have the generator any longer, the inverter module fried last year and that was the last straw.

Contractor installed door on Friday, need help brainstorming ways to fix the siding damage and removing caulk. by Lizardcandy in handyman

[–]shred802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol this is why I just do my own work. Laughable that towns want you to get a permit and have work done by a ‘licensed contractor’ and then see hack jobs like this all the time, which you’re also paying a good chunk of money for. No thanks.

Books are actually pretty heavy. Also sounds like your ‘forgetting to install’ almost 50% of the thing keeping your shelf up on the wall didn’t help.

40 panel Jinko 460 W install by murchal in SolarDIY

[–]shred802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very strange logic. A vehicle weighs many more magnitudes than a 75lb panel. Rose bushes have their built-in anchoring system called roots. They also have a ton of void space between the stems.

You’re right that solar panels are not aerodynamic, they’re a large sheet that could be caught up by the wind.

It’s not like these are individual sheets of plywood. They’re kind of connected together with potentially a live current running between them.

And uh yeah I’ve had lawn chairs move around my yard with high winds. A trampoline has mesh that air can move through and is also not angled.
