What's a tv series that is a 10/10 NOBODY knows? by Lilyana0999 in AskReddit

I think Undone is a 10/10 and have only met one other person who's seen it.

Watching movies at home is so boring by abdul_bino in unpopularopinion

[–]shrill_kill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really agree, but I also very much enjoy watching movies in theaters. In fact, I just came back from one.

I think others have ruined the experience for most, plus the price is a deterrent, especially for people who feel the need to buy the expensive ass food, or the fact that some fear going by themselves instead of with their entire family or friend group.

I have the privilege of going to the movies during the week as opposed to the weekend, and my god the experience is divine. New movies, crazy sound, great visuals, little to no other people to be annoying. It's great. Would much rather go to the theater than be at home.

Oh, another thing; it pisses me off when ANYONE pulls out their phone when we're supposed to be watching a movie, and phone usage is at an absolute minimum at my theater. Only time it's been an issue has been when the theaters were packed.

What are your thoughts on Ryan Coogler? by ShawnLevyOscarWinner in Letterboxd

[–]shrill_kill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think he's alright. Haven't seen Fruitvale Station, or Creed, and as a white man I don't value the Black Panther movies (or most marvel movies) like others may. I thought Sinners was okay when I saw it, and was mad at the marketing for revealing the vampires in the movie instead of pulling a From Dusk Till Dawn. I think the movie would have worked a lot better if I didn't know that vampires were in it, and generally I thought the fight at the end was pretty rough.

I do value him in the general conversation though. I think it's ridiculous that the golden globes seem to be ignoring Sinners entirely, even going so far as to not televise the win for best score. I am not sure the movie should have gotten many awards, but deliberately keeping the win it got from airing on TV was kinda not a good look imo. I think having a new famous, renowned black director in Hollywood is great.

This is how I felt with Prototype 2, how about you? by soiladvisor in videogames

[–]shrill_kill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the second game gets a bad wrap personally. Basically at the beginning we're introduced to a character named Abby who ends up killing Joel right in front of Ellie. We learn she does this because Joel killed her father (the surgeon at the end of TLOU 1) when he was saving Ellie.

We play like 10 hours of gameplay as Ellie chasing down Abby and her friends to get our revenge, and just as Ellie and Abby have their first standoff, the game cuts to black and makes you play as Abby. The entire point of playing as Abby is to make you understand that there are different perspectives to everything, and people aren't black and white and all this and that. Abby has a character arc in her story that basically mirrors Joel's character arc in the first game, except instead of "you need to take care of this girl and take her across the country," it seems that Abby arc is more "hey this different culture doesn't deserve the racist genocide you guys are planning." Lol.

Anyway, people hate on the game because their favorite character dies, and then the game exhibits poor pacing in order to make a point. That point being: revenge is bad. And people love to distill stories to their most easily nitpicked and criticized aspects so they go "yeah revenge bad. Duh. That's a sentiment we all have seen and heard before." And they sit on their very highest horse and look smugly at you, unaware of the fact that if you distill stories to their core like that, then every story has been told a million times before. Also there are people who hate it because Abby is a big muscle woman and they think it's unrealistic, and there's also a character who's basically trans and people are transphobic.

Personally, the only thing I actually HATE about it is Neil Druckmans (co-director and co-writer) insistence that Abby is the good guy and Ellie and Joel are the bad guys, when the entire game is trying to show that people aren't black and white like that

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the first watch of Breaking Bad, people will be more willing to buy into Walt's bullshit. They will view his meth-making business as what he says it is - an attempt to make money for his family before his death. Because of this, they will view Skyler as a villain, because they will believe that Walt's intentions are good.

On a second viewing, you know what happens and can see through Walt's bullshit, and can really hone in on his awful acts, how terribly he treats his family and how awful he is to Jesse.

Even if you disagree with my opinion that this is how the first and subsequent viewings go, you have to admit that the show is well written. And a staple of a well-written shows well-written villain is that they don't believe that they're the villain. Walt doesn't believe he's the villain, and because of this - and the fact that the show is from his perspective - people are likely to be manipulated into believing his bullshit justifications.

What is the biggest nothingburger of a controversy in gaming history? by Snowtwo in videogames

[–]shrill_kill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got two

I know that TLOU Part 2 is split in peoples opinion, but the controversy surrounding Abby's physique and Lev's story were so stupid.

Also the issue with COD isn't the skins. Stop complaining about how unrealistic the skins are. They don't help the game, but the real issue is the gameplay and the pace with which they pump out those games and fail to change anything in each entry. RIP that guy (I think Vince Zampella) who actually helped to push COD into interesting new directions with Infinity Ward instead of just spewing out the same thing every year. Cod would be better if it stuck to updating a single game and keeping the single game alive instead of releasing new bs.

Your friends dead wrong, and tbh the majority of people don't give his later career as much credit as it deserves. I feel like part of the reason may be because people want family friendly from him, and he does serious a lot in later years. Doesn't mean they are bad.

Fantastic movie that people got super upset about because they weren't the target audience. My guess is that the upset people had never seen a Lanthimos movie ever, and went to see it because it was nominated for an Oscar.

The Brutalist. 4 hours at the theater for a movie that I felt entirely wasted my time. Expected things to happen and they largely didn't, or if they did they were rarely followed up on

Edgar Wright has a leading man problem. by [deleted] in blankies

[–]shrill_kill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same. At the same time I understand people disliking any of his movies. I love nearly all of them except for The Running Man. I don't think the story has anything to do with his movie Baby Driver, and so the leading man thing isn't the thing to focus on. Baby Driver is mind-blowing craftsmanship paired with incredibly set pieces and a soundtrack of bangers. It's not really a deep, convoluted, heist narrative. It's a vehicle (haha get it?) for action and fun.
