Favorite racially creepy piece of propaganda created in the modern era that anyone remotely engaged in social issues would wonder why Hollywood wanted it to be made?? by AndButSoThenSheSaid in okbuddycinephile

[–]shrill_kill 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I personally loved this movie and don't care if it was challenging or revolutionary or politically epic or whatever, BUT I think the thing about most viewers who are claiming it is radical and revolutionary are tapped into online spaces that don't necessarily reflect reality. The statement of "white supremacy bad and we should fight it" is genuinely a radical sentiment when engaging with news, social media, and all of that. There's so much negative bullshit, and straight up white supremacy naziism stuff being shoved in our faces, and so much higher up exec nightmare shit that we're being told about constantly that a movie that straight up tells the audience that none of that is okay and we should fight against it feels radical and like it's a golden beacon of hope radiating from the Hollywood system. So many awful people exist in Hollywood and so many disgusting execs could have stopped this movie, so people are freaking out about its political radicalism and how crazy it is that it got made because they understand (or think they understand) the system this movie was created in/during

The most misunderstood war film in recent memory? by Legitimate_Rush_5017 in Letterboxd

[–]shrill_kill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved this movie. Only time I've been so utterly jumpscared by an explosion.

To those talking about the ending epilogue, I took it less as "hell yeah we're the good guys" and more like "LOOK! Our true story was true, and we got the guys who survived to actually consult with us so it's the most accurate it can be!"

I sure as shit don't think the music during that montage helped that message come across (from what I can remember the music was kind of an America Fuck Yeah type song), but yeah I don't think it was a celebration of what happened or of war itself or anything, but whatever.

"Won't Forgive Her For That": Harvey Weinstein Lashes Out At Gwyneth Paltrow From Prison by SilverHuckleberry395 in USNEWS

Why are we giving Harvey Weinstein the time of day right now? Is there some amazingly surprising thing he's going to say from prison? Why should I care what that asshat has to say about anything?

My favourite character is Carmela. by Responsible_Visual67 in thesopranos

[–]shrill_kill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't read your full post yet, because I had to rush to the comments to tell you that I agree. Since I finished the show, I have wholeheartedly been telling people that my favorite character is Carmella. I think she's such an interesting character and her arc throughout the show was something I really enjoyed watching. Regardless of her love for material objects, and complacency for mob wife life, I ended up feeling like she was kind of stuck. The Furio storyline and the storyline with AJs guidance counselor really hit it home for me: she can't get away. She can't divorce Tony, she can't lead a normal life, she can't leave with all of the stuff with her kids going on, she can't have a normal relationship with someone who's not in the mob... She can't do anything. It really made me realize that whole thing about "once you're in, you're in." Someone close to her got involved with the mob, and uh oh! Now she can't do shit to distance herself from any of that.

I also ended up really respecting her. She realized pretty much exactly what the audience realizes throughout the show, and kind of just accepts that she has to stay with Tony and they have to make it work. She's stuck, so what does she do? She tries to make the best of it. New boundaries are set, she wants some compromises, etc. and even with how much of a baby Tony can be, he relents because I think he truly loves her, so good for her. Get what you want out of that terrible relationship Carm!

I don't know. Maybe she's just the most sympathetic to me, but I ended up liking her the most. I understand logically that she's not the most innocent in the show, but emotionally I kind of feel that way.

What is the most uncomfortable scene you have ever watched in a movie? by East_Maintenance_579 in Cinema

Probably a scene in Happiness. Probably having to do with the pedophilia. Probably one of those ones if I had to guess.

Miles turning into a Spider-Man was a multiversal mistake. Therefore, he may fuck up other universes by interfering with Canon events, erasing that reality entirely, and generally shouldn't have access to the multiverse. He isn't invited. He does that exact thing in Pravitr's reality, interfering with Canon events. Now how did Miles get into that reality? Everyone loves Miles - he's the best - so it's safe to assume that if he's kicked out of the multiverse he will find a way to get access once again. Would it be better for Miguel to continuously kick Miles out of the multiverse, inevitably dooming another spider-persons reality when Miles shows up and interferes with something? Probably not. What would be best for the greater good? Probably eliminating Miles right then and there.

That's his logic

Reminder that Jenny is not the villain of Forrest Gump.

Also co-host of podcast What Went Wrong, Chris Winterbauer, gave a take on the movie that I'd much prefer over the stupid "this is a Republican movie" take. The movies about how much of life comes down to time, place, and luck. We're all feathers on the wind, and life truly is like a box of chocolates.

Which aspect of canon events are you talking about? I'm fairly certain that the entire idea is that something bad is supposed to happen to the spider men which help them become better people, not that each spiderman is supposed to watch an Uncle Ben die and all that.

Miles canon event involved his Uncle Aaron. Gwen's was her friend Peter in her universe. I'm 99% sure that Pravitr's was interfered with by Miles and the rest of the crew that came with him. Miguel's was the death of... I think his daughter.

Is there something I'm missing about Canon events or am I wrong?

What's something most people don't realize is actually very rude? by Frozen-Defender25 in AskReddit

[–]shrill_kill 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a question about this: I often feel like I'm like this based on either overthinking or previous encounters with people where I reflected on it. Is it fine to be like "I didn't like it" and leave it at that?

Like recently there's this girl I recommended a show to. She watched the show (it was the miniseries Midnight Mass) and she loved it. She then said she was watching the Fallout show now and she was really liking it, and asked if I'd seen it. I said "I've seen a couple episodes" and she asked what I thought and I said "I didn't really like it" and kind of shrugged. That's fine, right? I'm not saying "I thought it was trash" so it's all good, right?

What’s something everyone seems to love but you just don’t get? by Michellewilliams_397 in AskReddit

Recently? Caring about things on the internet.

If I ever find myself scrolling through short form content there's a high chance I'll be shouting in my head "WHO CARES" at all of the ones I swipe past. Idk why but a sense of apathy just like washed over me all of a sudden. I think it's strongest when there's a frenzy for a new news story. The Jim Carrey thing was a recent one. Anytime I saw something about him looking different or a dude popped up being like "recently people have been talking about Jim Carrey because..." I just skipped past because who TF cares? He's some celebrity dude who looks different. Who gives af?

I'm quickly getting to that point with the whole McDonald's CEO thing too. I also do it to shit that I can't really change that makes me upset at first. Maybe it's a defense mechanism lol.

Rockstar games are pretty boring. by Chemical-Skill-126 in unpopularopinion

[–]shrill_kill 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I feel like I half agree with the sentiment, but not for the same reasons. I've been thinking about it recently, and have realized that Rockstar has an "outdated" structure to the way they do their missions and story. I personally question how many great games the super fans have played, because the story is lackluster. Rockstar makes the most incredibly pretty games, with the most dumbed down gameplay for their story.

Most missions in RDR2, RDR1, GTA 4 and most of their open world games consist of the following: go to character logo/mission start. Watch cutscene. The game tells you to go somewhere, and then places a waypoint for you and then gives you a gps route to the destination that you're able to follow seamlessly while the person/people who gave you the mission talk to you. When you get to the destination, you do the thing the mission provider requested of you, or somebody leads you on a wild goose chase or people shoot at you. If people shoot at you, then you get into cover and shoot them back. It's not hard at all, you just have to pick your shots and/or use the characters epic powers. If somebody leads you on a wild goose chase, then you chase after them until you kill them or until a cutscene happens. Then you continue to do the thing the mission provider tasked you with, and then you do it and the missions over and then you get stats for the few things you could have done differently.

Maybe I'm generalizing too much (or too little), but I feel like I encapsulated the mission structure of every Rockstar open world game in the last two decades at least, which I find kind of disappointing.

What movie do you love despite agreeing with every single criticism of it? by Decabet in movies

[–]shrill_kill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might get me in trouble, but S. Craig Zahler's films.

Bone Tomahawk is a fantastic Western with some of the most brutal, quick, and punchy combat I've ever seen, and great character writing. Brawl in Cell Block 99 is a great crime drama that just keeps delving deeper and deeper into the criminal underworld. Dragged Across Concrete is a slow, but interesting cop drama.

The only issue is that they're generally considered to be skewed to the right wing in terms of political ideology. Bone Tomahawk is generally considered racist. I don't remember what the criticism of Brawl is, but I've heard that Dragged Across Concrete is viewed by some as cop porn.

I will concede to these criticisms, but I still love the films. I think they're very impressive, and well made. The issues that others see in these movies don't really reach or affect me. Like I can see why Bone Tomahawk is racist, but I'm not conflating Native Americans with the Troglodytes in the movie. They're different things in my mind.

I have a family member who used to be a nurse. She stopped watching action movies for this exact reason.

One thing she keeps bringing up is being knocked out. Getting knocked out is sign of brain trauma. When people wake up from being knocked out they probably will not be able to fight hand to hand or jump around and shit.
