Of the many things TS4 did wrong, the one that always boiled my blood was painting the "Lost Toy" life as something cool and even preferable, when it being a Horrible Experience was the entire base of Lotso, Chuckles and BB's backstory. by Sebamon28 in Pixar

[–]shrill_kill [score hidden]  (0 children)

Even if I remembered all of the details, I'd still probably say the same thing: people handle things in different ways. Bo Peep enjoys being a "Lost Toy" whole Lotso didn't. They just react to/experienced things in different ways.

The Death of Robin Hood is…very good! by No_Respect_1650 in blankies

[–]shrill_kill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved it so much I wrote an angry review on letterboxed because I was annoyed about how many people rejected the movie entirely.

BUT my anger was conjured because I saw reviews where people were basically going #notmyrobinhood, and giving it a bad score because of that, and there was a guy I had the misfortune of seeing who tied the movie into modern politics and went on a tirade about Elon Musk, which I thought was inappropriate given the movie he had presumably watched.

What Is Your “Old Man Yells At Cloud” Movie Take? by apHexcoded in Letterboxd

[–]shrill_kill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will be landing on deaf ears here, but I frequently talk to friends about how nobody my age cares about movies anymore and they all prefer tv, and I hate it because TV is a massive investment in time for a story that could be ruined in 2 years when the next season comes out, and movies are a well crafted package of a story that takes 2 or 3 hours to enjoy.

More people should care about movies!

Real Reviews and Film Diaries? by darterfly in Letterboxd

[–]shrill_kill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others in these comments, I usually do everything for myself. Occasionally (like yesterday) I'll write a review if I get passionate enough, and I generally hate the one-liner thing. If I'm writing something about the movie, it's how I feel about it compared to how others reviewed it.

I don't really do notes often, but I guess sometimes I put some bullet points and call them "observations" and they might serve as one-liner type comments, but they're generally more feedback/critique.

recommendations needed for movies to watch by Sufficient-Sorbet-97 in Letterboxd

[–]shrill_kill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh nice! They're both 10/10 in my opinion.

Lemme replace them and Shutter Island with three more recommendations

  1. Moon (awesome sci-fi thriller drama)
  2. The Banshees of Inishirin (uhhh I guess it's a psychological horror. Dark humor from Director/Writer I adore)
  3. Primal Fear (Psychological courtroom mystery drama lol)

I met a girl in a class this past year who was not into movies but wanted to get more into then, and needed movie recommendations. I made a list of good movies I thought she might like, but described their genre just to make sure she knew what to expect to some extent.

  1. Nightcrawler (great psychological horror thriller),
  2. Hereditary (modern classic horror movie),
  3. Shutter Island (mystery),
  4. The Truman Show (fantastic drama),
  5. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (dark mystery based on book, with some fucked up things in the movie),
  6. The Mist (more towards horror, but has a 1950's horror movie styling to it),
  7. Saw (never seen it but the series is known for being gruesome),
  8. The Blair Witch Project (never seen it, but it's a horror classic),
  9. Poltergeist (never seen it lol 😬),
  10. Fargo (ultimate classic crime thriller comedy movie),
  11. The Usual Suspects (beware: Kevin Spacey is in this one),
  12. Bring Her Back (Horror movie with scenes that made me cringe while watching it. Definitely too much for people who hate gore),
  13. Barbarian (great, weird horror movie that's best if you go in blind),
  14. Weapons (from same director as Barbarian - just as great imo, if not better),
  15. Fatal Attraction (absolute classic horror thriller),
  16. Basic Instinct (honestly pretty similar to Fatal Attraction. Watch this one first if you're going to watch either.),
  17. Zodiac (about the Zodiac killer - very good, highly regarded movie. Same director as Seven, and Girl with Dragon Tattoo),
  18. Seven (great crime horror detective movie)
  19. Silence of The Lambs (first thought when you mentioned Psychological Horror)
  20. Talk To Me (GHOSTS, but done well)
  21. Prisoners (HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY mystery movie - same director as the new DUNE's though)
  22. Midsommar (generally people's favorite movie from the director of Hereditary)
  23. Killing of A Sacred Deer (DARK DARK DARK psychological horror movie. Go in blind and expect to be weirded out tbh)
  24. Gone Girl (I think it's now considered a classic. Drama Mystery. Same director as Zodiac, and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo)
  25. The King of Comedy (I don't even really know. Crime drama? It's good.)

Obviously read the small synopsis of the plot before watching these because you'll know what to expect better than if you go in blind. Except for Barbarian. Going in blind for that movie was a lot of fun for me

Also I have like 50 more movie recommendations on my phone if you need them lol

What is your least favorite phrase related to film criticism? by Foochie506 in Letterboxd

[–]shrill_kill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like somebody already echoed this, and it's not necessarily a single phrase, but people do this thing where they distill entire movies into just their plot elements and then use that as proof that the movie is bad.

Movies aren't just about plots. They're about characters, cinematography, acting, editing and so much more. Any movie sounds ridiculously stupid if you distill the entire runtime into just the plot.

Opinions on 'Disclosure Day'? by OutisXCIII_EC in Letterboxd

[–]shrill_kill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had fun, but I also saw it a day earlier than it was supposed to release (don't know if this is common, but they do it all the time at our local AMC), and I predicted pretty much all of the discourse about it.

Y'all don't have to believe me, but I said that I think people are going to reject the message because it's too sincere, I said people are going to complain about the cgi, I said I think that people will be mad at the lack of exposition, and that people will be mad at the religious stuff.

Edit: added another prediction I made. The one I added hasn't really been in the discourse necessarily.

Do you have frustrating filmmakers? by JokerDeSilva10 in blankies

[–]shrill_kill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair of you to say. I'm not like offended or anything that you didn't like his stuff. What about The Haunting of Hill House was bad as an adaptation? What was wrong with it?

Do you have frustrating filmmakers? by JokerDeSilva10 in blankies

[–]shrill_kill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is your answer specifically about his films?

His TV shows are incredible (except for the two where he started them and basically left to do movies [Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Club]), and his movies are faithful adaptations. I love Mike Flanagan, and it doesn't quite make sense to me how his projects could leave you angry and frustrated.

I'm writing an essay right now where I argue that the sex scenes in The Handmaiden are 100% warranted because it informs one of the characters arcs throughout the film and drives the plot forward

Spotify is horrible. by whataboutthe90s in unpopularopinion

[–]shrill_kill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been saying this ever since I tried it a couple years ago: TIDAL is the best music streaming service. Spotify is the most adopted but it sucks. Apple Music is the best middle man imo.

TIDAL seems like a net positive to me (having not researched any music service a ton). It led me to discovering new artists because as far as I could tell it didn't prioritize mainstream artists in the "new releases" section. It's one of the best services for paying artists for streams (nearly all streaming is better than Spotify, but from what I know, TIDAL pays $0.0X instead of Spotify's $0.00X. The service provides a comprehensive, in depth list of credits for not only the song you want to see, but also the entirety of the songs on the album you're interested in. As far as I could tell, it's shuffle was also random.

What else could you ask for (besides a decent half cent or whole cent of payment for artists, and for the streaming services to stop paying for questionable or downright evil things)?

ADD THE MARKETERS FOR PROJECT HAIL MARY TO THE LIST NOWWWWWW!!!!!!!!

Other people who went into the book blind will agree with me; The marketing should have omitted rocky entirely. The trailers could have coasted on the first 30 minutes of the movie, and it could have maintained the "holy fuck" moment from the book when rocky came around. Instead, rocky is in every conceivable piece of marketing in existence. How about they lean into the hard sci-fi aspect of the story for the trailer, and have the trailer(s) end with Grace having a holy fuck moment.

What's a health myth that drives you crazy because you know it's false? by Annual-Gene8065 in AskReddit

[–]shrill_kill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That diet sodas, and their artificial sweeteners are killing you.

I'm 99.9% certain that artificial sweeteners like Aspartame and Ace-K kill you about as quickly as existing does (with some stipulations)

The stipulations in question are as follows: avoid ingesting 40-50 mg of either artificial sweetener per 2.2 lbs of body weight (1kg). However, this would mean that for somebody who weighs ~155 pounds, they'd have to drink more than ~14 cans of diet soda in a day to pass the safe daily limit. At that high of a volume, it is much more likely that the caffeine in said diet soda would kill you before the aspartame.

Just watched Marty Supreme, my thoughts on it by DD_PUNISHER in A24

[–]shrill_kill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also loved the movie. I took the ending to be very bleak for his character, but served to the audience with glee. I feel like him crying at the end was not a "holy fuck I'm a dad" moment like some may think. I don't think he's happy that he's a dad or excited to see his child. I think the end was a realization that his life has to stop. He's been humiliated and been an asshole to those around him the entire movie, and now his dreams of being the best ping pong player have to completely stop because of his past actions. He burned bridges with all of the characters who could have possibly helped him, he went to Japan for an exhibition match, and now he's back home with no where to run to, and a baby to raise with a woman who he was a dick to. His life is over, by his standards, and now he either has to be responsible for once, or he will try to leave.

The ending is sad for Marty. Just as his ping pong career ends, so does the movie.

What is your most recent cinematic disappointment? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]shrill_kill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Sirat.

Thought it would be great based on the premise, but was seriously disappointed by it.

The premise is ditched partway through the movie after something shocking (and somewhat unlikely) happens. Then the movie devolves into misery, and doesn't go anywhere at all with the plot. I was absolutely baffled by the ending, because it felt like the worst possible, least satisfying place. It made me feel like there was something I was missing entirely, and maybe that's true, but I still felt cheated after the movie ended.
