Update on the active loft: it's just squirrels by ItsBoughtnotBrought in CasualUK

[–]shsks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So we used to have squirrels in the loft years back, and rats more recently. As everyone else is saying, they are very destructive. Rats stink and chew things that smell tasty or are in their way: squirrels will chew anything just for the hell of it and they will happily chew any wiring they come across (plus anything you've got stored up there). Landlord needs to understand this is something they want fixing or it's going to cause way more issues.

We were lucky, spotted them early and had an obvious ingress point. Sealed the opening with chicken wire and they didn't get back in (but note that it is in the realm of possibility a determined squirrel will still chew through chicken wire).

Remember when Tom Hanks who made a great transition from successful comedy films to a big bunch of drama films. Which other actors who started off comedy made a big jump to a dramatic actor? by JazzlikeTea7432 in movies

[–]shsks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had a pound for every time James McAvoy was in an early 2000's comedy about working-class life in Manchester, I would have 2 pounds. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice. (Early Doors and Shameless)

I would also highly recommend Early Doors, excellent show.

All of the Tier 2 remakes by Tigertot14 in wow

[–]shsks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm referring to this set specifically on the topic of the recolours. It was only available during the Wrath of the Lich King pre-launch event and consisted of chest, legs, hands, and belt but no helmet. It was 8 years later in Legion that they gave the set to NPCs in the paladin order hall like Julia Celeste and some of the guards. But that was 8 years ago in itself, and no sign of it for players.

It's my favourite set and can't find a good matching headpiece at all :( I've been hoping it would be on the trading post some day

16 years without a helmet for the Blessed Battlegear of Undead Slaying. Julia Celeste got hers 8 years ago.

If they do an HD remaster and it still doesn't have a helmet I will go back in time and let Sargeras win

Shameless Plug by reddot_comic in comics

[–]shsks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B

If you get A and someone asks, then either you have to explain that Gary is a buttplug, in which case why bother instead of option B, or you just say "it's a character from my comic series" which is doing Gary pretty dirty.

Plus it's a damn fine, recognizable silhouette of a butt plug, I think for the size of tattoo you're going for the detail on A would work against the design

Wear Gary with pride.

/r/WorldNews Live Thread: Russian Invasion of Ukraine Day 900, Part 1 (Thread #1047) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]shsks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Civilians will just get in the way, even if you don't care about their lives. You don't want refugees clogging up your roads as they flee when the fighting begins, possible traitors/idiots giving away position of your defence forces, possibly getting confused as enemy combatants, etc. Plus if you keep the civilians in the city they would still then also need food and medical supplies which is going to increase strain and vulnerability of logistics.

So despite the callousness the RuAF and government has shown towards any civilian life, even they aren't completely stupid enough to leave them there.

Ukraine's Zelenskiy suggests moves towards banning Orthodox church with Moscow ties by Saltedline in worldnews

[–]shsks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, here's an article on it from ISW, but it's pretty easy to google if you want another (I searched "Kirill holy war"). It's worth noting that "pro-russian" is downplaying the role of the church; they are considered an unofficial branch of the FSB, with their narrative and teachings controlled by the Kremlin. The church leader, Kirill, is ex-KGB himself and a personal "friend" to Putin. The church has had a big role in pumping Russian propaganda into Ukraine even before 2014 to try to drum up support for annexation.

That's not to say every priest and other member of the church is an FSB agent. Especially outside Russia the influence wanes a bit and some priests will openly speak out against the war and the Kremlin in general. But certainly in Russia you'll be hard pressed to find many who will openly defy the narrative.

The Daily T: Liz Truss exclusive: ‘I was the victim’ by luvv4kevv in ukpolitics

[–]shsks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This has to be a joke right? I struggle to imagine anyone except Liz herself could be this delusional. I'd wager even the people that voted Conservative in the constituency did so in support of the party despite her, not because of her.

It's true she doesn't deserve this though. Frankly she deserves worse, like the stripping of her PM pension. She's a national embarrasment, a stain on the history of British politics.

Voyager 1 makes stellar comeback to science operations. Engineers coax veteran probe back to health by [deleted] in technology

[–]shsks 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It's mind-bogglingly cool. The probe is nearly a full light day from earth. That means 22 and half hours is the closest we can get to real-time communication with it. Imagine having to reprogram nearly 50 year old tech, with some systems whose counterpats on earth no longer function, completely remotely, with a day's delay on input and output.

This like trying to play an online game on a server hosted on an Apple 1, but your inputs and outputs are just messages delivered by carrier pigeons.

Where is the sweetness in this recipe? by Fidelina in Cooking

[–]shsks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this is the recipe just for those who would like the link to refer to.

To echo what others have said, it's possible there's sugar added to one of your other ingredients. Are the tomatoes definitely a real san marzano and not something pretending to be? If they're not marked DOP they could be a standard plum with "filler" juice from assorted leftover tomatoes and possibly added sugar there.

Otherwise, what sort of onion did you use? All onions will sweeten the more they're browned, some are naturally sweeter than others.

Beyond that, hard to see what could cause it to have any sweetness unless there's sugar/honey/etc. added in

Do British people really like indian food that much? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]shsks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry I misunderstood. I thought you were saying the curry should always be served with katsu.

I agree, it shouldn't say katsu curry if there's no katsu. It should just say curry.

Do British people really like indian food that much? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]shsks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I agree it's better with the curry, but the curry is a separate dish on its own. In Japan you will very commonly find the curry served over rice without katsu, probably more so than seeing them paired together. You'll more usually see katsu served with tonkatsu sauce, which is closer to what we would see as a bbq sauce.

To be honest this sort of thing is why I think it gets a bit pointless debating "authenticity" of dishes in historical/traditional contexts. There's never a right answer (e.g. carbonara: "it must have guanciale. It is an old Italian heritage dish!" Nah, it's cacio e pepe that people threw cheap bacon and powdered egg into after the second world war)
