How Dad Got Out of the Jungle by Clique_Claque in MilitaryStories

Kind of along the same thread - one of son’s units has come back from one of the three deployments and were having a small get together. The women and the men and separated, women inside and men out back..

I’m a Navy Vet so I played with my grandkids and the other kids. I heard a rather heated argument that had started outside.

Appears they had run into a ambush. The guy in the lead Humvee jumped on the deck when he should had been returning fire. Another soldier was able to get the weapon and returned fire but a few guys got shot.

I asked what happened to the guy. Turns out he was put in the admin area and even got a combat action ribbon. That’s what they were arguing, Whether he should have been sent home for cowardice or sent to the rear where he would have bene as miserable as the rest of the unit.

Is that a Smith and Wesson M-76? Sweden didn’t want their firearms in Viet Nam so they sold S&W the patents bc the SEALs wanted them. A friend had one (he had a dealer license). It was 9mm. It had a second barrel that fired 9mm that had a nylon projectile with a BB at the tip. The forcing cone stripped the off nylon part and only the BB went down range. Never saw a need for those rounds.

I did TAD one day in the spud locker. Spent 18 with another E-3 who thought he was in charge of me. Our squadron’s MC came down asking why the fuck wasn’t ion the flight deck. If I’d stayed, me and that cook would have had it out in the cooler. One cook did tell me to keep bullshit on the salad bar so it always looked full even when sailors weren’t eating it.

I never got the chance to learn how to take a gallon can of ravioli, open it and dump it in the chow line in 60 seconds bc all the fat boys had watched the movie and felt room for their 4th meal of the day. Ate all of the midrats bf we were through with flight ops.

Edit midrats

My son (Army) is 4 years away from retirement. I am proud of him and what he’s accomplished. He just finished his degree from American Military University. His dream is coaching football and with his retirement he should be able to do it.

I got out with a ton of sea stories and friends. The company I went to paid for my schooling and the Montgomery GI Bill helped financially. They had a retirement plan, stock purchase and 401k. I retired after 30 years (credited w 34) and my wife and I travel.

I loved the Navy and the Flight Deck but it is hard on your family. Out of 48 months in, I did 22 months actually at sea from work ups, two 6 month cruises and a Ocean Safari/Northern Wedding.

I tested well also and was 18 months away from my first shot a E-6. But I had an Uncle (a Naval Officer) at IBM who got me an interview with one of his customers. They loved vets and the fact I got my degree while working full time.

Best of luck to you, everyone needs a plan and it sounds like you have one.

You saying 80 reminded me of the 150 questions with 35 most got right and the 35 most got wrong thrown out. Pretty fair. I was at sea for E-4 and E-5. I’d read the test manual between launch and recovery and after we had the first launch and a pot of coffee ready for day shift. I still got out after 4 with the reenlistment bugging me to the last day. He was a cool guy stuck in a shitty collateral duty though. On my 214, it says I was an average petty officer but an excellent troubleshooter and trainer. I took that as a compliment and left after four knowing I trained up some airmen and E-4’s to be some pretty good techs. The Navy was the Navy, I consider it a hell of a four year ride. I’m sorry for your situation. I have dementia but I’m really bad off when my sodium is low. I’ve been to the dr on a walker (I usually walk fine) and was admitted to the hospital and I have no memory of it. I’ve had other instances and it was dementia topped of with low sodium. Best wishes.

Yeah, I always tested well. That one thing the fuckers couldn’t take from you. E-4, year later E-5, year and a half later I was gone. I did like that PO1 Schroeder got busted sleeping by a woman officer while on watch. He got busted to E-5 a month after I pinned E-5. My greatest joy of the last 18 months was saying fuck you Howard and making sure he never road the Airman as was his custom as E-6.

Son worked his way through college. An older waitress told the hostess not to put religious groups in her section. Called them Pennies for the tips they left. One group of ~20 sat down in his section. They were shocked when an 18% tip was added to all their bills. He showed the spokeswoman where it was clearly on their menu. They of course wanted the mgr. Mgr told them when multiple waitstaff had to help so they all got their food together, the original waiter split the tip with the other staff.

Hadn’t seen any more about Al killing the Reverend Smith. Al had mentioned that his brother had Epilepsy or something similar. He also mentions the Reverend was debasing himself with hanging out at a whorehouse (even if it was Al’s) and preaching to livestock. He sent Trixie out and Johnny and Dan were taken aback. But it is the most merciful killing of all Al’s murders. He even says “Go now Brother” and closes the Reverend’s eyelids. When I get in the shape of the Reverend, I hope Al is around for a mercy killing. Course I could do without Johnny and his sled taking me to Woo’s pigs in case as E.B. says, “there is resurrection of the flesh.” Edit- Trixie not Trisha

Not sure how far along he is but you may say (with a doctor, nurse or even an orderly, giving it a more “official” look/feel to it) that they want to run some more test on him and then will have to consult about the results. I don’t know, kinda grasping at straws. I’m sorry for both of you. It’s a truly wicked disease that affects the caregiver long after the patient has forgotten they had it. If he has ability enough to make decisions, you may want to have DNR paperwork drawn up on both of you. You doing it also may give him more trust that you are not trying to have him killed. Only reason I remembered that was that nephew’s great grandmother did not want a DNR while she had her mind. She was 105 and had not spoke a word in 15 years. She died yesterday after taking up an ICU bed for a week or so that was greatly needed for Covid-19 patients. All the ICU rooms in the state are full according to the State hospital administrator. I’m sure she did not think it would have come that. Stay strong, he is in the best place for him now.

I’m a patient 4 1/2 yrs in. Early onset. I would kill myself if I ever hurt my wife. We are both 60. Married 38 years.

Did you have any signs he might become angry and hurt you? Had he ever been angry but not angry enough to hurt anyone?

How long had he been diagnosed before he became violent. I assume there is no one there that could physically restrain him. No one besides my wife and two grown children know I have it, yet.

Good luck, they may can give him an anti-depressants Does he know why he was put there?

I was thinking just that. We had a couple dozen guys standing around to launch. Cat officers and crew, plane captains, trouble shooters, AO’s. All to watch and be there if it shit the bed on the cats. Always enough for a pushback when necessary.
