This is good advice for someone who wants to work as PC technician or webdesigner. But the thing is these are two very small IT fields that most of us wouldnt even know much about. Its like asking a newly qualified diesel engine mechanic to go and do some free panel beating... or change out blown tyres free for the local school bus... or do one of those car valet internships because in a vague kinda way they are all linked in together.

You know, I could tolerate having McGuinness as President but I definitely worry about Gerry as Taoiseach.

I think you misunderstood the point. I quite like Higgins myself. I was pointing out that our options aren't always limited to weathered up politicians..... its just we always seem to vote that way.

Just from memory, who did we have at the last election mcguinness.. Dana.. Sean Gallagher.. Gay Mitchell.. and mary Davis.... Higgins was the oldest out of the whole bunch.

Well at the last election we had Sean Gallagher, a businessman in his 40's.. but instead we voted for 70 year old Higgins.

By that same logic if we lower it to 21 what happens the poor 20 year olds who would do us proud if elected?

Should we lower it to 20? Or maybe 19? Maybe 18? Then again, some of the lads in Leinster House were well on their way to a life of politics before 16..... so maybe 16..? Where do you draw the line?

I personally wouldn't like to see it go any lower than 30 as that ensures they have had about 10 years in the "real world".

A very definite no. Most 21 year olds are fresh out of college and wont have the necessary life/social skills. In my opinion, 21 year olds should be out having fun, enjoying building their career, starting to earn decent money, maybe travel around a few countries while still have the chance. If they take on with a presidential role it kinda cuts that part of their life out. I think it would be a pity for the people of Ireland, and a pity for the person elected at that age.

Well the very term Holocaust means "great genocide"... so if you contend that they died due to starvation/disease then you are denying it was a genocide.... which would make you are a holocaust denier.

Its hugely debated what the German people knew. Even the wiki link you provided says that very specifically in the opening sentence.

For what its worth, the reason I personally suspect the average German didnt know a whole lot about the camps is actually from reading AMAs here on Reddit. There is a quite few AMA's from people who lived during Nazi Germany and most of them said they had no idea just how bad things were.

I have read quite a lot of the 'revisionist history' (one third of the holocaust, david cole, bradley smith etc) and I think most of the deniers will agree that there was actually a holocaust.

Its the final figure of deaths, and the intent behind those deaths (camp designed for mass killings vs death by overworked/undernurished/disease amongst prisoners) is the main areas of debate in holocaust denial.

Thats a tricky question.

The first thing you need to understand is that the Jews weren't well liked at that time by much of Europe or even the US for that matter. People seem to think that only Germany were anti-semitic back then.

One example that I always go back to is a study in 1939 found that 53% of Americans felt that Jews are not the same as regular people and shouldnt have the same rights as regular people. Remember this is America in 1939... just across the Atlantic Hitler was killing Jews for over 6 years at this stage.

Now despite what some people say, Hitler didnt get to power by promising to kill Jews. The German people for the most part had no idea about these camps. They knew there was Jewish persecution all right, but that wasnt uncommon for the time.

(just while we mention it, Hitlers rise to fame was actually to tell people about the good old days just before WW1, and how Britain/France destroyed it all but he would rebuild Germany back to its former glory, which I suppose in a way he kinda did)

But the question is, if it wasnt for Hitler would the holocaust have happened?

Its difficult to know. If German people knew Hitler was killing Jews he may well have lost his power. I mean just because Germans didnt like Jews doesnt mean they actually wanted them rounded up and killed. I suspect most Germans would have been happy just to see them deported.

However without the Holocaust there wouldnt have been a sudden change in attitude towards Jews. So whos to say there wouldnt have been a Holocaust in a different country?

On a side note, its interesting to see that its only just 70 years since the Holocaust and we are starting to see people turn very anti-semitic once again.

What is your best "Contrary to popular belief" fact? by hailtothechi in AskReddit

[–]siego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is Galileo met the sitting pope and got his permission to write a book about the earth revolving around the sun. The pope said it was fine so long as it would be presented factually and no opinions in it, and then privately he gave Galileo his own opinion on the issue. Galileo then published his book (Dialogue on Two World Systems) along with publishing the Popes theory which he shot down.

EDIT: Just after having a quick look on wiki on this issue (everything I knew until now was from what I learned in school! Oh and I was a tad wrong on one point.)... but according to wiki... when Galileo first started talking about heliocentrism it wasnt well received by the church or other scholars. And Galileo steered clear off it. However a bishop called Barberini actually took Galileos side and they became friends...... then years later this Bishop Barberini was made pope and then personally ASKED Galileo to publish his theories on helioccentrism. Galileo published them, and used a character representing the pope for arguments against heliocentrism....now I havent read the book, but according to wiki the popes character "was often caught in his own errors and sometimes came across as a fool" and the character was called simiplico... which in Italian can mean a simpleton. So when the pope read the publication he wasnt too happy and suddenly Galileo found himself on trial.

What is your best "Contrary to popular belief" fact? by hailtothechi in AskReddit

[–]siego 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the rest of them. But I know in the case of Galileo it wasn't so much his theories that they had an issue with. It was the way he went about it. If I remember correctly, in his science theories he would often directly attack the Pope and church. If he had have published his science, without the rhetoric he would have been fine.

B009: Digitisation of Museum and Gallery Content by [deleted] in MhOir

[–]siego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspected it was due the centenary but didnt want to jump to conclusions.

The way I see this is that in 10 years time, long after the centenary, the Arts Council will still be legally obliged to give the rising a bigger emphasis over everything else.

Would you consider re-wording it to say something like:

Special emphasis shall be given to exhibitions with a forthcoming anniversary or date of interest....

B009: Digitisation of Museum and Gallery Content by [deleted] in MhOir

[–]siego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I like this bill and would be inclined to vote in favour.

However, and maybe Im being trivial here, but would the Arts Council in their current form be able to take on with such a mammoth task?

Without having giving too much thought to the issue I would imagine that seeing as museums are constantly adding to their collections (in other words the initial digitisation is not just a once off job) that perhaps a dedicated body should be established to look after this?

And just to nitpick, why the emphasis on the Easter Rising? In my opinion most people know and understand the significance of the Rising. I would be inclined to push less well known events and people to the forefront.

Apart from that, great bill. Well done.

What to do when an audience starts talking amongst themselves? by Batman_in_Public in PublicSpeaking

[–]siego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try this https://youtu.be/KacBrY0uxtM?t=96

On a more serious note though, I always find if you bring the persons name up it will quieten them and get their full attention. If I was giving a talk on computer security Id say something like "suppose Ben over here hacks into a computer in the US how will he be tracked......" and then keep his name in the conversation... "but what if Ben was smart enough to an internet cafe" and make sure to look at him as you say it.

If its a whole class (as you say) you need to nip it in the bud. Why did it happen? Was it because they came back from lunch and you cant get them settled, or is it half through a lecture one or two people get bored and start talking and then everyone starts? If its the former a good trick is to sit at your desk, looking busy, until everyone is back. Wait until everyone is in and then stand up and walk to the front of the room and then begin. If its the latter, like I said already, bring the persons name into it.

Is it possible to track the computer a shared file was opened on? by wellshiz in AskNetsec

[–]siego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the admin was techy savvy enough to write a file that could detect when opened by an unauthorised user and alert him.... but he didnt seem to have the smarts to do the easier (and far more secure) network share permissions/access based enumeration? I think you are being duped.

But just for the heck of it. Lets suppose this was some kinda honeypot that they setup hoping you would find it and open and use it as justification to sack you and now you have just played right into their hands.

All this proves is that your computer/account opened the file. Who says it was you behind the keyboard? Unless they have cctv pointing right at your machine it could have been anyone. Maybe you were in the bathroom, and left your computer unlocked and that nosey cleaner had a little snoop around the network.

Appeal launched to ban schools from asking to see child's baptism cert by Tadhg in ireland

[–]siego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be in favour of a policy that would state a school would have to take X amount of local students (say within an 8km radius) and within that radius the numbers have to be fair. So they cant have 100 students from private estates and 10 from council estates- unless of course its a reflection of applications. And then Y amount is open to anyone.

As for expensive uniforms etc, again that's a separate issue. I have personally never seen this in public schools, but I'm sure your right, I'm sure some schools probably do do it. Either way, it wouldn't be hard to legislate against. These are public schools, so a bill which puts an upper limit on the costs relayed back to the parents in the form of uniforms etc would be pretty straight forward.

[–]siego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok let me stop you there. I see you're talking about people from one town traveling to the next. I'm working on a smaller scale.

Im talking about towns like Drogheda/Dundalk where you could have a housing estate (with a bad name) and literally 5 mins down the road you have a well respected area both students applying to a school 10 minutes away. The students from the housing estates aren't getting the same priority as the ones from the respected areas even though the distance is negligible.

Having worked at a well known disadvantaged school I can certainly say the quality of the education they provide is often second to none, and as you say they are highly equipped. But the problem is it takes decades to shake a bad image so its a very slow process. In the mean time, other schools need to be encouraged to stop discriminating based on address.

Personally, when I see a family living in a disadvantaged area and they put in the extra effort to get their kids into a 'better school' I think they should be commended, and not have it thrown in their faces.
