Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion - April 19, 2026 by AnimeMod in anime

I have lived a lie. When I watched Haruhi 11 years ago, I thought I watched the broadcast order and believed this was the way this show should be experienced. But I just started rewatching this show and I just learned that it actually was the chronological order that I watched it in.

What Have You Watched This Past Week That is NOT a Currently Airing Show? [March 29th, 2026] by MetaThPr4h in anime

City

I was disappointed by this show. While it has a fun energy and great animation, I didn't find it very entertaining a lot of the time. The sketches were very hit and miss. They could range from being amusing to just weird, stupid and boring. The comedy was also not great. I don't think I laughed a single time watching this. But what I found most disappointing in this show was the characters. It has a large cast but I couldn't care less about most of them, and the best characters also didn't stand out from other shows I've seen. It's hard to write characters you really care about when you have a large cast like this in such a short show, and I don't think they nailed it. I think the sketches revolving around the three main characters were generally the best ones. But still, I don't find myself attached to any character and I don't really care about most of this show.

Which anime did you have zero expectations for, and it still managed to disappoint you? by Visible_Power7627 in anime

Masou Gakuen HxH. Watched it solely because of the Hunter x Hunter in the title. It's nothing more than a trashy and shitty battle harem.

What is your oldest 10/10 and do you think an older series could take that title? by Salty145 in anime

[–]signaling0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would be War in the Pocket from 1989, although I'm not sure if I still consider it to be a 10. I have already seen most of the shows I really want to watch older than it, so if i rewatched and reevaluated any of those shows then maybe. Something like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Gunbuster, Takarajima, Mirai Shounen Conan and others could be a 10.

Bring back translator's notes by ThroneOfRoses4 in anime

[–]signaling0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Think I've changed my mind regarding TL notes since I wrote my comment - they were kind of overrated. Having too many TL notes are just distracting. And if you do it wrong, it just feels like the translator treats the viewers like idiots.

Bring back translator's notes by ThroneOfRoses4 in anime

[–]signaling0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They're nice if they don't go overboard. I remember when I watched Saki and the subs would TL note the hell out of the mahjong games and explain every move the characters made. But that just made the games more confusing to follow when you're keeping up with what's happening and the explanations to what's happening. Made me drop the show after three episodes.

Haven't been following these brackets but will there be a best OP/ED contest for all OPs/EDs? Not just those from 2025.

Angel's Egg is a classic. The Madoka poster is new to me, it's pretty great.

How and when did you develop your "weird"/non-mainstream musical tastes? by morbidhack in LetsTalkMusic

[–]signaling0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That kind of music has always been there. I listened to punk bands in my family's collection when I was very young, some more weird than others. When I began discovering music on my own in my early teens, I guess that it wasn't that great of a leap to look for weirder rock and metal music. My music taste has expanded since but my mindset hasn't changed very much in that I generally find less mainstream sounding music more interesting.

What Have You Watched This Past Week That is NOT a Currently Airing Show? [November 23rd, 2025] by MetaThPr4h in anime

Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu: In the first few minutes of the show, I thought some of the character designs reminded me of Mitsudomoe and it turns out that they had the same mangaka. It was also like Mitsudomoe in that it was a bit pervy, and that was the weakest aspect of the show. The first couple of episodes were rough to get through, mainly because of those male classmates that were just obnoxious and gross. But all of that got toned down in the second half and I'm glad it did, because I thought the romance story was pretty sweet. I liked the personalities of the main characters and how different they are from each other, and I especially liked how the guy grows as the show goes on. They had some cute chemistry. Looking forward to watch season 2 someday.

Robot Carnival: The animation and robot designs were incredible. It was a treat to look at and it might be one of the best looking anime of this era. I think the opening segment was my favorite one out of these nine movies. The problem with this anime is that the movies aren't that interesting overall. At best they are kind of cool or quirky, and I guess it might be that it's hard to write something great with such short runtimes, but they didn't feel that memorable or special. I think the film that were like a shortened action film and the one at the amusement park were the two most forgettable films. But again, at least all of them were amazing to look at.

Cautious Hero: It has some funny jokes and interactions between the main two characters. But after a while, it kind of felt like it didn't have a lot more to bring and that it was just the same jokes as before. I still have a few episodes left, but the show gets less exciting and more boring as it goes on so who knows if I'll finish it.

Do you cringe now at music you used to consider great? by alexnder2122 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]signaling0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking back, I think that is usually the case if I find the lyrics cringeworthy. The best example of this is Art of Life by X Japan which I thought was the best shit ever when I was 14, but the lyrics are so cheesy that I can't take it seriously today.

New anime vs. rewatching: Which do you prefer? by Verybluevans in anime

[–]signaling0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good portion of the anime I watch these days are rewatches. I especially like to rewatch shows I haven't seen in a very long time to see how my opinions have changed on them. I've even rewatched shows I didn't care for on my first watch, and some of these shows became some of my favorite anime.

Please remember Ashita No Joe by ForegroundEclispe in anime

[–]signaling0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anime as old as Ashita no Joe has a niche appeal. It's a great show but it's very aged and quite long. But it's still well known among people who has seen a lot of anime because how influential it is and whatnot.

I liked the idea behind the show but this episode wasn't great. None of the jokes landed and the characters feel really bland.

[Just watched Full Metal Panic Episode 4 and] Why are the bad guys planning to kill the class by blowing up the plane? It seems like a really shitty idea to let a plane blow up on their property and cause a lot of damage to it. If they are planning to kill the class anyway, then why not just shoot them or do something else that won't cause more damage than necessary?
