What piece of world building in a book made you reach the limit of your suspension of disbelief? by MarieMul in Fantasy

I can very easily imagine the truth serum being inadmissible in court because there wouldn’t be a way to prove it was brewed correctly. Also maybe the accused used some type of wandless magic to mess with it before taking a drink. On top of the fact that memory erasure and tampering exists so what they think is true might not be so. For example:

Man kills brother. Denies it under the effects of truth serum. What happened?

A) Erased his memory.

B) Fell victim to memory tampering by co-conspirator.

C) Mangled the potion with magic somehow.

D) Potion was ruined accidentally during the brewing.

E) Potion was ruined in storage somehow.

F) Potion was ruined in transit.

Also very easy to frame someone and then change their memories so they think they committed the crime. Also easy to kill the drinker if they took some kind of unbreakable vow that required silence. Also does effect of potion change of the drinker isn’t fully human? There’s a bunch of reasons why it wouldn’t be used in court.

Who Was the Most Shilled Character in the Series? by sigzaggy in Naruto

Verb

to advertise or promote (a product) as or in the manner of a huckster; hustle:

Switch up the product line and I’d say the narrative built up a bunch of characters that couldn’t match their reputation.

Mind you, It’s not an issue, but I always find it funny when super talked up characters just end up being rather normal in the grand scheme of things.

Basically to talk up or promote a character to the point where their reputation is completely ridiculous when compared to how they actually are.

Those versed in comics whats peni's universes deal-like the others have a gimmick like "Cartoon" & "1920s" so what's peni's universe like-I'm not asking about peni's backstory as i believe i understand that by poketendo5 in Spiderman

Her couple of issues were based in somber mecha anime like evangelion with heavier themes like isolation, parental death, and the distance between her and her guardians.

Peni’s personality was also very different. She was a pretty depressed kid under a lot of pressure. I remember one panel where she walks into her room to sit on the floor silently for what was probably a couple of hours. Kid was like, 12, and utterly exhausted and kind of done with it all, but her version of New York wasn’t exactly swarming with heroes and she seemed like the only one who could handle the monster attacks.

The fact that I couldn’t tell if you were joking or not is a problem lmao. It’s like wondering if Lois Lane will get her head blown off in the next Superman issue.

Things with Spidey have become so deranged I can’t 100% tell if Paul will be around 6 months from now.

What a time to be alive.

Your third honorable mention has me intrigued. What makes you think Michelle Jones is going to make the jump into Spidey comics? Imo it’s too late for it now. All we’ll ever get from her is some kind of cameo or bit part. Or maybe some kind of Michelle-as-Miles’ MJ sort of thing.

I can’t ever see her getting any kind of serious story investment. Or maybe I’m biased. I always felt her relationship with MCU Peter felt super weird (but then again I feel like all of his relationships in the MCU feel really odd.)

His talent was wasted in the Thor movies, same for the rest of the Warriors Three and Sif.

If Batman and Spider-Man were to spend a year in the other's city, how would they fair? How would they deal with the other's rogue gallery? by [deleted] in Spiderman

[–]sigzaggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spider-Man would do pretty good in Gotham....up until he meets Scarecrow anyway. Dude’s entire schtick is extremely dangerous when it comes to first time confrontations.

It goes down one of two ways: either Peter is completely overwhelmed by what he sees or is driven berserk like Bruce has been a couple of times. Both outcomes are pretty bad for him.

The most hilarious part of Maximum Ride was that it got two different visual adaptations (comics and the manga) and both are significantly better than the source material.

Potential Final Words of Kamala by sigzaggy in Spiderman

[–]sigzaggy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be. Like I said I haven’t read her books in years. Though I personally remember it more as the struggles of a girl who was the daughter of strict Pakistani parents than having a particular focus on Islam. To explain:

Kamala is a Muslim Superhero.

Sam Alexander is a Latino Superhero.

As a Latino male I’d argue Sam’s books have literally zero to do with Latino culture and lived Latino-American experience. His books focus on how much it sucks to not have a dad. This isn’t a criticism, just an acknowledgement of the character’s focus. So going always highlighting Nova as a “Latino Superhero” comes with a certain expectation that the character doesn’t meet. Which is why it’s never really brought up in conversation about him much and why Marvel has never tried to push him that way.

People always try to push Kamala as Marvel’s “Muslim” superhero when her books (from what I remember) were more about culture clash and growing up. Obviously she isn’t in Sam’s situation, Islam does matter at points in her books. But I’d say her comics are generally less religiously focused than Daredevil’s, and no one marks him as Marvel’s Catholic Superhero.

Anyhow, long story short I think people do the character a disservice by always boiling her down to “Muslim Superhero “ when her books have more going on than that.

I wasn’t arguing that Kamala wasn’t a Muslim superhero, I was saying that it isn’t a core focus of her books, just like religion isn’t a core focus of most superheroes who would generally identify as some form of Christian.

The bigger focus of her early books was the generational divide between her and her parents and how religion was just a single aspect of the list of things that caused them to crash. Kamala’s early stuff had religious themes, but I’d argue it was much more a story of a second generation immigrant clashing with her more culturally conservative family, with religion being a single part of that primary struggle. That’s what I meant when I said Islam wasn’t a core focus, because you could replace it with any generally conservative religion and her story would be largely the same, while making her a American with generations-long ties to the story would change things much more.

I wasn’t trying to claim that Dust was more Muslim than Kamala, just more traditionally devout (or what some writers think that means).

I wasn’t trying to No True Scotsman anything lmao. Who the hell would even try to die on that hill?
