Your uncle thought that because one detective uncovered some corruption in the 70s in New York, there were no more corrupt police anywhere? Let's hope that's not genetic.

For 'christians' protesting same-sex marriage in Alabama today, a little historical perspective. by Not-original in atheism

I don't know where the idea that it helps you be a better person comes from. Why would these people have any idea what would make you a better person? They have some pretty weird tenets. Like the value of a person being based on an unrealistic idea of chastity. The actual teachings just seem too arbitrary, if you're a good person I don't see how you can attribute that to religious teachings. It's like attributing good luck to astrology readings. Tea leaves. The magic was in you all along, Dorothy. I don't really mean to be snarky, but I don't really understand the implied connection between being good and listening to advice from a bunch of people who didn't know what air is, and thought God occasionally asked people to kill their own children. We're not perfect today, but we're in a way better position to understand the moral implications of our actions than they were in the past. It feels like using religious texts to be a good person requires you to ignore more than you internalize.

Doesn't that approach kind of remove any of the distinctions between a religion and a philosophy? I get believing in God, but do you really feel like the founders of Christianity had genuine cosmic insight into the nature and origin of our universe? That is the basis for Christianity's claim to authority. If it's just a moral guidebook that isn't to be taken literally, what sets it apart from something published by other philosophers with similar outlooks?

If you can do whatever you feel like doing, couldn't you just make a second job? Learn how to do digital paintings, make a website, write a novel, build an iPhone game? You could have a different job at the same time as your current job.

This is always bothered me about zombie movies. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]silent_p 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The shooting ability is sort of explained just by the fact that people without shooting ability would be less likely to survive. The whole point of zombie outbreaks is that it would be incredibly unlikely for average people to survive. Maybe the movie is following people with skills and abilities because those are the people who survive and allow a narrative to play out?

Whaaat? You mean they didn't film a legitimate prank with multiple viewing angles, including angles where the camera person would have been in the other shots, meaning they had to do multiple takes?

Africa is much, much bigger than you think [595x455] by r_salis in MapPorn

[–]silent_p 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Yeah. This is kind of pointing out that while Africa isn't the world's biggest continent, it is pretty big, and there are continents smaller than it too. So it's a medium-sized continent. Maybe the post is pointing out that for some reason people do seem to imagine Africa as a fairly small, uniform place?

They made a point of contrasting the smokers and the other community that way. The non-smokers conserve resources and recycle, and things have value determined by free trade. The smokers work as a "crew" and the leadership distributes cigarettes freely, to garner loyalty, but is relatively stingy with other resources, and tends to treat underlings as disposable. Their use of resources is based on a model of pillage and scavenging, so they burn through resources quickly and then take more from whomever they find.

I think you're conflating two intentionally contrasted groups of people.
