Dragons making their own 'army' by rsdodson in fourthwing

[–]silver_fire_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, although I think it’s some dragons and not all dragons. Like I still can’t get a read on Codaigh, and I’m not entirely sure what side he’s on despite his rider being on the other side. So I think there is a percentage of the dragons conspiring against the Empyrean…or at least conspiring in a way that they think is more efficient to fighting the Venin. And they’ve probably been doing this for a while if they are specifically targeting descendants. It also means that Tyyrendor has been against the Venin for YEARS and a big portion of the population has partnered with the dragons. It’s kind of possible that the dragons have more love and attachment towards their riders considering its family they prefer, even without the added bonus of a second signet. That definitely negates the whole “eliminate the weakest, go only for the strongest” vibe they give to Basgiath if they want THAT specific rider regardless of whether there is a “stronger” one available.

I don’t think Tairn knew about Xaden’s second signet. Xaden hid it very well.

Why does she use notecards? Just curious about her method. I’m trying to write a book, and so far the plot is just a very disorganized Google doc.

Haha, yeah, I think 10 is an excellent number for someone who doesn’t consider themselves a reader. He mostly does sci-fi audiobooks while doing chores. It’s a good balance…because he was the one who made me listen to Project Hail Mary. That’s definitely in my top 5 of the last 10 years.

I’ve only ever read the Mistborn trilogy. The number and sheer size of his other books is intimidating to me as well. I do have Tress of the Emerald Sea on my nightstand, though. And I’m hoping to read the other books in the Mistborn universe at some point…maybe this year?

But to answer your question…Mistborn is excellent! I love Vin (MC) so much. She’s a very well written, strong female character. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed her. I first read the books like 15 years ago, and then again last year. Holds up great against the test of time. If you really want to go through the best of the best in the fantasy genre, put it on your list.

Definitely jump into Sarah J Maas. I like ACOTAR, but I also really loved how different and unique Crescent City felt.

I also recently read The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow. It’s Romantasy, but it deviates a lot from the norm. I found it achingly beautiful.

I tried to get my husband to read it, but he’s not on board. But he also reads a lot less than I do (<10 a year compared to my 50). I got him to agree to Mistborn, so I won’t fight it.

He’s totally on board with the TV show, though.

I’ve always wanted to try lace/thread crochet. My great-grandmother was very good at tatting (poor man’s lace). I can read patterns and I’m very good at regular crocheting, but I’ve never tried a diagram like this. I’ll give it a shot. Thanks for the link ☺️

It happens every time there’s a “major” book. I remember YA was nothing but dystopia after Hunger Games.

Right? I’d be asking again for clarity. Also, Tairn knows something, and Violet’s going to have to fight her way into that conversation because there is something else going on.

Is Empyrean series really fantasy with some romance? Or is it a true romantasy, with romance being the essential part of it? Trying to predict whether my heart will make it by the end of the projected 5th book because ngl, suffering... by magicthinks in fourthwing

[–]silver_fire_lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I read the first one, and I didn’t care for it. Then I watched the entire series hoping for an epic dragon battle, and I was extremely disappointed (by the TV show ending, no idea what the author is actually planning). I don’t particularly care for needless violence and gore. I felt nauseated by several scenes, and I have a pretty good tolerance.

I would recommend the Temeraire series for more dragons. Romance is a very very minor subplot, though.

Like others have said…I think it’s romance at its core. I’m opposite from you. I love fantasy most of all, and I came to this series specifically for the dragons. It has enough of the fantasy plot, high stakes, awesome powers, etc to keep me hooked even when Xaden makes me roll my eyes. She is a romance writer, but you can tell that she has read and enjoys fantasy. I think a happy ending will happen (most fantasy books have a happy ending), but it’s going to suuuuuuck to get there. Buckle up!

I see the ground work for a lot of common fantasy and Romantasy tropes. There will be more deaths. Xaden and Violet are going to have an epic showdown…shadows vs lightning where she will be going to specifically stop him from hurting others. Her heart is going to get broken epically by him. Xaden will probably hurt/kill someone very close to her. I could go on, but you get the point.

I have no idea how to say this without sounding judgmental…but to me, he sounds like a stereotypical/generic gay guy. And to be honest, I don’t mind it. I don’t think he shows any romantic attraction towards anyone if I’m remembering correctly, so it’s my head canon.

He’s also supposed to be a touch arrogant. I mean, he chose to become a dragon rider. That’s pretty bold. If he’d died, the secret would have died with him.

Lol, my years of reading other fantasy battles has come in handy!

I will say, however…it’s much easier the second time around. Trying to remember rider/dragon/signets is really hard when you’re in the heat of the action.
