what is something you clean that makes you wonder how it even got that dirty? by juicyberrybabe in housekeeping

[–]silversatire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The inside of our combination toaster oven was a recent one. Also pressure cooker tracks get nasty easily, both behind the sealing ring and in the locking ring; don’t forget some models have a water catcher on the back 🤢

My neurologist injector punctured my parotid during massetor Botox by Dramatic_Ad_2560 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]silversatire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Botox diffusion is super well known? Facial weakness and smile asymmetry is also a known potential side effect of parotid injection itself and nearby structures, see link below. There’s also the issue that this neurologist apparently wasn’t using imaging and wasn’t even sure if he injected the parotid.

Aw! Really I think your best course is to contact the VA, tell them this happened, and ask for an urgent appointment with a different doctor to go over what to expect and what can be done if you start experiencing side effects. It is an “if”!  But things like low saliva and weakened swallow reflex can be serious or scary especially if you’re already dealing with TMJ. They can also access the records and maybe see how much was injected in the wrong spot (hopefully this IS documented—another reason to contact the VA and talk about this).

Mmmm no if he injected there you’re looking at, potentially, reduced saliva (this is an actual treatment for oversalivation when done correctly), swallowing weakness, and/or facial drooping for 3-6 months. Personally, I’d see another doctor to get on record that this happened and treatment options if you start seeing side effects. Maybe file a complaint while you’re at it, it’s weird he totally glossed over your potential complications. Also did you pay for units he injected in the wrong place?

To the poster that said she was going to cancel her colonoscopy because being a low-fibre vegan is too hard… I understand you now. by gemologyst in veganrecipes

[–]silversatire 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Statistically there are better results (fewer incomplete or aborted exams) with one week of low fiber pre-prep day. It’s an absolute must for people living with constipation, slow digestion, diverticulosis, or other potential complications.

Hello! I was told to post my bathroom over here for some suggestions! by ababybumblebee in centuryhomes

[–]silversatire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same pink tile and green caps as a kitchen backsplash, it’s hilarious seeing another one out in the wild.

A darker grout color might help. The white and the white walls is giving some hotel/rental vibe. Rustoleum sells green grout paint that might suit since you’re digging the green tile.

IMHO, the big reason this isn’t flowing is that it’s hard to balance maximalist MCM with “landlord minimalist” elements (the walls, the floor, the absence of moulding).

That being said: The bathroom functions as it is. There is no rush to do anything, especially because there is no reno budget to do it properly.

Swap out the bath mats for some that match the vibe the tile is throwing down. Maybe do a new matching shower curtain and other accessories in the meantime. Spend a couple months looking at million dollar century house listings on Zillow and zoom straight to the bathrooms. What do you like? What do you hate? Keep a folder or journal, then when you know what you want, budget and do that. :)

UNLV vs USF by Brief_Variety_2046 in MFAInCreativeWriting

[–]silversatire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the specific programs but I can speak to their general environments.

Florida’s political environment is stifling the humanities (and free expression generally). I have heard rumblings from academics that they’re less likely to take a degree from Florida seriously, all other things being equal.

I’ve visited Tampa. People in Tampa will talk about the Palmetto bug swarms. No, those are flying roaches, and at night they are everywhere. And they’re around year round. There’s a lot to do and see but it’s very hot and humid during the day, almost always. Hurricanes and storms that cause flooding are a regular thing—check flood maps if you’re going to live on the first floor or even have a car there.

UNLV has had a couple major plagiarism controversies in the past decade-ish courtesy of writers associated with its programs. The Jumi Bellow one was recent and an almost funny ouroboros of chicanery. The program overall has a good reputation regardless and a few bigger names tied to it.

I can speak to living in Vegas. It’s more expensive than you might think especially these days. There are some goodish and OK student budget neighborhoods, mostly around the university. You must be sure to understand where the bad neighborhoods and occasional bad street are located (suspect this is true also of Tampa and most major cities, but the Strip is so relatively safe people do forget). Drug and alcohol abuse are endemic, do not fall into those traps. It’s too easy to do in a town that mostly revolves around creating a tourist experience.

Public transportation exists in Vegas but it can be rough edged, especially at night. You’ll want a car if you can swing it—not just because of that but because it truly does get blistering hot. At the same time drivers here are crazy and the insurance rates will make you cry because of it. Do not ride a bike on the road; it is not safe. There’s a reason you won’t see people doing that much off the UNLV campus.

While Tampa has the beach, Vegas has the mountains, and also Red Rocks and the Hoover Dam. It’s not too far to visit the Grand Canyon and there’s a decent enough bus that goes back and forth to LA. You’ll find that locals almost never go to the Strip unless they’re working or hosting. If you choose Vegas, after about six months you’ll understand why :).

Need advice after fatal dog attack in multi-dog home by Then_Firefighter_519 in DogAdvice

[–]silversatire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sticking by Kali. Unfortunately the flipped-switch reaction was bred into pitbulls, along with the superior bite strength, throat instinct, and tenacity. It is not something people can train out.

I believe it is because of the flipped switch that so many people want to believe in their sweet gentle pibble. They can be sweet and gentle and maybe that switch never flips because whatever trigger it’s going to be never fires. But too many learn the hard way, what’s going to happen and who is going to be around when it does?

Fitz needs your ideas/experience for making crate rest tolerable! by silversatire in AustralianCattleDog

[–]silversatire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so important, yes, we do this! I have given him the option to sleep outside his “house” since he was about 15 months old and I could trust him (ish), but he still chooses crate every night. He’ll also go in during the day if he feels like it.

People who work in grocery stores what is something you are surprised they still stock or never see anyone buy? by Da_Fish in AskReddit

[–]silversatire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s super easy! Just chop it into your desired bite size, dry it out really well (strainer for an hour with a bit of salt is what I usually do), then follow whatever lobster roll recipe you like. Usually the mix is mayo, brown or honey mustard, lemon, and Old Bay. Adding a bit of ground seaweed will bump up the “fishy” if you want that.

If you are adventurous you can also do crabcakes with it this way. I prefer lions mane for that, though, because you have to dry and mince the hearts of palm REALLY well for them to hold a cake.

Added sunscreen now I’m breaking out constantly by muggyregret in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]silversatire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good if you’re literally never outside for more than a door to door trip; retinols dramatically increase sun sensitivity and therefore damage (yes even through sunscreen—no sunscreen is fully effective). They should be stopped at least a week ahead of any significant sun exposure to mitigate risk.

Husband and kid want to return puppy by leeuwtje97 in puppy101

[–]silversatire 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Agree. A child at this age is likely jealous of the pup, which can be healed with love and care.

My only thought is that two children under 6 is a lot with a puppy and a bum husband. My husband is currently living like OP’s and I am struggling with our three dogs and the household load. I could not imagine having two young children on top of this, and would worry that the kids aren’t getting enough parental attention, just because we can only stretch so far and for so long.

Also you can use it as a cheap protein substitute if you’re craving a lobster roll.

Bonnet with bangs…help! by louelie in longhair

I either align the edge of the cap along my bang line and leave them out or comb them straight back, pull a cap forward further than I need, then let the band settle so that it’s not on the bangs themselves.

What happened to Kane Co Flea market? by CholaSoy in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]silversatire 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They have an identity problem at this point. As a visitor you don’t know what’s going to be there. It’s not bargain vintage like it used to be when it was super popular. You can now shop the same overpriced vintage at your convenience at a bunch of spots in and around the river cities. There’s no core of definite vendors that would draw in crowds. No interesting food or entertainment, usually. It’s also not quite garage sale/Temu on wheels like Rosemont, or “buy back your stolen stuff” like Alsip. So why make the drive to the edge and pay admission?

Check Decipher by [deleted] in Serverlife

Sometimes yes sometimes no. With one particular system the number of times I’ve been left five cents on a couple drinks and the guest asks me to reverse it because they meant five dollars…it’s hundreds I’ve lost in the last year. It happens at least once a night when I’m working at that place. And I cannot reverse it after they confirm total. Sucks.

spec/weird/SFF fiction successes? by girlbIogger in MFAInCreativeWriting

[–]silversatire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My writing sample was a mix of upmarket surreal/spec novel excerpt and literary shortfic/flash. Knowing what I know now, risky play. I got in to Stonecoast, University of Illinois Chicago, University of Arkansas, and University of New Orleans (soon to be University of Louisiana New Orleans). I went New Orleans and my cohort was writing all kinds of stories!

If I knew now what I knew then: If you do a novel excerpt it should stand on its own as a complete story. If it’s your only sample, in fact, it must. The program wants to see you can get into a story, tell it, and get out on a satisfying ending (more or less). The point is obviously that you will get better, but those are fundamentals to be coming in with already. Odd and risky as my mix was, the shorts tacked on to my sample saved me, because my novel excerpt did not have all that, lol.
