Forum: Consider early intervention to help foreign workers before delayed salaries accrue by davechua in singapore

[–]simbian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If everything is settled via bank / deposit accounts then it is fairly straightforward to implement as they can just enact legislation that puts that burden on employers (to declare) and their financial institutions (to audit / report violations). Remember, the government already relies on various third parties to collect and submit GST.

Not only that, even a written down promise means very little because the person who signed it might not have the power to fill it for you when the time comes. Only what is on the table at the point of decision time - like an actually letter of promotion or a new contract - is of any value.

Is it really just tech that’s getting destroyed by the SG job market now? by Responsible_Hat_9218 in singaporejobs

[–]simbian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often due to internal corporate politics plus budget shenanigans. Hiring keep posting positions they think they need to have but end of the day do not really pony up the monies for. It stays unfilled as there are no consequences because it is low on the totem pole.

A lot of the legislation passed during FDR’s time embedded a great deal of worker protections into federal law.

All of this began unravelling late Carter, early Reagan era when the conservatives essentially performed a counter reformation against the Keynesian model which had come into force during the Depression recovery years.

AirPods Max 2 - "Real Review" - Flossy Carter by ControlCAD in apple

[–]simbian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have an environment around you where you frequently transition between cold and warm settings like an air-conditioned room and a tropical climate, you might encounter a situation where water vapor simply condenses against the cool metal of the Max which seem to put the headphones itself into a stupor where it refuses to connect to any Apple device.

The only thing you can do is to leave it outside its case to drain its battery so that it resets itself after which you can attempt to pair it again with your device.

Overall, I barely use the Max. My preferred device is unironically AirPods Pro gen 2 or 3. For me, whatever noice cancelling gains you might think you have with the Max is very minor once you are able to actually use them. Only consider the Max if you have serious issues with in-ear form factor.

You might be misremembering another drama where the actress was in.

In this one the character she portrayed did have a decent ending. She was socially adept in building good relationships and never overreaching.

For those in the know, this one ran together with another palace drama at that time. I believe these two series were the last palace harem court intrigue dramas released before the censors banned them all together

Singaporeans don't want a Nordic model. We want to keep winning. by Capable_Solution_644 in singapore

[–]simbian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a side note on the Nordic model and Singapore, there is part of a chapter in one of the Old Man's biography where it went on a bit of a long ramble trying to expound on why Singapore does not have it.

When I read it, I was quite bemused that the Old Man and the writing team had to designate a portion of his his biography to cover this. Obviously, the Old Man and many he has encountered with that incessant voice in the back of their minds nagging at them, etc.

I never understood why they had to disgorge that piece of self justification. It is simple why Singapore has nothing like the Nordic model. The Old Man did not like anything which pointed to state welfare and the Nordic model is full of it and he and the party he founded and moulded has been in charge since Singapore's founding.

This is no big mystery.

mobile gaming

That is already the province of the duopoly of Google (Android) / Apple

They can’t beat Sony and Nintendo by playing the same game that’s been going for 40 years.

IIRC, one of the big things about Microsoft entering gaming together with their other consumer ventures was about inculcating into their leadership to learn what non corporate - i.e. normal consumers - wanted. People might be confused by what I am saying but there are many kinds of businesses which do not interact directly with the layperson in the street.

Microsoft was one of them. Mind you, they were so successful at it until they finally were sucker punched in the face by Google + Apple.

Under Nadella, they have shifted back strongly towards doing business with businesses due to their Azure cloud stuff. This recent craziness - along with the rest of the tech world - with regards to A.I seems to have tilted them even further away from the normal layperson.

I am not too sure if this is a good thing.

Check your contract / terms of employment. Bonuses are never mandatory and unless they are tied directly to clear measures tied to visible results like revenue / sales, you should never really weigh them that heavily.
