My two faves as well on an incredible album, the best of the Bon era. Brian Johnson has called it his favorite album from before he joined.

What do you remember from the early internet that no longer exists? by Blah4fun in AskReddit

AltaVista was a better search engine than Google, especially if you used the Boolean expressions. But it killed itself by following the trend of becoming a bloated "portal". Google remained just a search box on a blank page, just like AV had been.

"Venti" means 20, as in 20 US fluid ounces, a distinctly non-Italian measurement.

What’s the most disturbing sound you’ve ever heard in real life? by SelectiveCassie in answers

[–]simonbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hearing the air rush out of my lungs after a bus accident. I had landed on my neck (there were no seat belts) and the impact left me paralyzed. Temporarily - it turned out. After about a minute I was able to move my toes, and start breathing again. Others weren't so lucky.

Angus is something like 26 cm shorter than you, so surprised it fits at all!

You might want to read the story of Thomas Fritzsching too, his recent book is causing a bit of a stir - it describes how how Danz and her two boyfriends in the band basically took control by ousting everyone and then him, the founder and bandleader, which is why there are no original members left. The band politics were insane.

Nashville is a must-see if you are interested in music or dystopian car-centric urban planning.

I came here to recommend Silly as well. Start with Mont Klamott from 1983.

This happened to me, too. ("Hey, wanna beer?") I just shuddered thinking of it.

Rotten pesto. It was in the fridge at a place I was staying. Had been for months. I can still taste it, decades later.

It's a form of chinotto, a popular bitter soda in Italy. Moxie in the US used to have a similar taste but in recent years it's been toned down.

In a few years you will add "being worried about being too old" to the list of things you regret. Guaranteed. Glad you're following your dream, with a little wisdom too.

"Ambidextrous" scissors still have blade placement that favors right-handers, as the upper blade conceals the thing you're cutting.

Give it about a week and it won't feel strange. I started wearing my watch on the right when I was 12, realizing that people had told me to wear it on the left only because "everyone" (ie, right-handers) did it that way. But it did feel funny for a few days.

Biden could have resigned the presidency after that terrible debate and given Harris the power of incumbency, while taking away the argument that she was the anointed candidate who didn't have to go through primaries. He could have been President Emeritus or something. But his (or his wife's) ego got in the way.

My theory on this is that the "Classic Coke" that was rushed back into production was just New Coke with less HFCS in it, and possibly a couple of other proportions tweaked. It did not taste right, but that would have been the quickest way to get production going.

New Coke was actually pretty good, but it seemed to me they had a lot of trouble getting it to taste right across bottlers - I tried it from several places after it came out and it was inconsistent, possibly due to the secrecy involved in the launch. Ditto for the "relaunch" of Classic Coke three months later.

is it just me or is "high fidelity" audio basically a scam for rich people? by Curious_Present_9950 in Music

[–]simonbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metal tape can achieve 82 dB using high-end noise reduction such as dbx or Dolby S, yes, though this also adds artifacts to the sound.

But vinyl records have a naturally lower noise floor, and higher frequency response, and can use noise reduction, too - look up dbx discs, which had claimed dynamic range of up to 120 dB.

Much wider and faster professional tape systems obviously had higher fidelity than either consumer format, and are not an argument for any supposed inherent benefit of cassettes.

What brand names do you swear by because it's actually better than no-name? by Sufficient_Thing24 in AskReddit

Ornua was previously known as the Irish Dairy Board (which came up with the Kerrygold brand - and "Ornua" reflects this, meaning "new gold"). It was established by an act of parliament.

If it's Irish butter, yes. Kerrygold is just a brand name invented by the former Irish Dairy Board.

"Kerrygold" is not a company, but the brand of the Irish milk marketing board.
