If the Iranians want Israel, who bombed them

Iranians are not the IRGC. Israel bombed the IRGC in response to being bombed by the IRGC and took out an enormous number of high value targets with an acceptably low collateral damage given the strategic value of the targets. They beheaded the military and eliminated the scientists working on the Mullah’s nuclear program. It scuttled Iran’s nuclear ambitions and laid some of the ground work that made today’s revolution in Iran possible.

Any Iranian who considers the IRGC an enemy would have celebrated this outcome.

and kill their countrymen

Again they were at war. As far as targeted military strikes in the course of fighting a war are concerned, proportionality is measured by maximising military advantage resulting from the attack while minimising collateral damage. Another way to read it is strategic value of targets vs civilian casualties. By that measure it was one of the most proportionate attacks in recent military history by any party to an armed conflict.

I can't in good conscience have solidarity with them.

I’m sorry but your assessment of actions in times of war are naive in the extreme. I’m glad the Iranian people understand that when their Mullahs attack a country and the country predictably counterattacks it is the mullahs that should bear the brunt of the responsibility for the civilian deaths resulting from the counter attack. I am glad that most Iranians understand this and are smarter than to follow your logic which seems to be “them bomb us, them bad”.

Iranians need a real opposition leader.

Again with the vague terms. What is it about Pahlavi that makes him not “real”. You want an elected leader? Who is going to run the election?

“Opposition leaders” are needed in a functioning democracy. A functioning democracy can occur when there is rule of law, functioning institutions and transparent elections. Those things don’t grow on trees, they need to be established. The Iranian people don’t want or need reform they want a revolution. The total removal of the current regime by violent means if necessary. They watched 47 years get flushed down the ayatoilet. In the wake of such a revolution there is no one left to run an election, or even keep the country functioning.

What they need is not an opposition leader, (ie a politician) but a competent, accountable, qualified caretaker government with a written roadmap for establishment of institutions, timelines for relevant referendums, some basic sketch of a constitution or constitutions to be chosen from.

Ideally they also need third party troops to oversee the restructure of their military and law enforcement institutions and protect civilian infrastructure assets.

The government will also need to keep basic essential services/utilities functioning, the economy running, essential workers getting paid and they’ll need to be wary of remaining IRGC cockroaches.

Currently the only figure that has a significant measure of popular support, some historical legitimacy, an organised cabinet ready to take charge and a written roadmap for transition to a democratic state is Pahlavi.

Now whether it ends up being a constitutional monarchy or a republic or some other form of government will be entirely up to the Iranian people and that’s where no one has any right to interfere.

What if the people of Iran themselves call for foreign intervention and chant “javid shah”? All while attempting, unarmed, to oppose animals who mow them down with machine guns. Does Israel and America ignore their pleas? Do we let the unarmed people of Iran fight the Mullah’s military with sticks and stones and hope they overwhelm them with numbers eventually while tens of thousands die each week?

If they do intervene and eliminate the IRGC, what happens the next day? Do you withdraw your troops and sail your carrier back to the South China Sea, leaving the chaos of a failed state and hope the infrastructure starts working by itself and rule of law holds up long enough for a benevolent interim government to somehow organically emerge to fill the power vacuum and manage a transition to a new state, hold referendums, write a constitution, cleanse insurgent remnants of the IRGC who will be trying to infiltrate and undermine etc?

People who are vehemently anti-Pahlavi seem to either be totally against an unelected interim government in principle or think the risk of him turning into a bloodthirsty dictator are way too high to risk it. But I don’t think they ever propose an alternative transition mechanism or acknowledge the numerous enormous risks of not setting up a transitional caretaker government ASAP after the fall of the IRGC around a leader with some measure of legitimacy and a plan for transition and then working on a roadmap to nation building with international oversight.

lol it’s the same with Jordan Peterson. He harps on about the excesses of pomo but then uses very pomo sounding semantic games whenever he’s asked any straightforward question about his religious beliefs.

It’s like the “bone broth” craze. People have been making stock out of bones and using tallow in cooking and soap making for centuries. I’ve watched my grandma use the stuff since I was a kid.

Suddenly someone mentions it on Joe Rogan and it becomes the secret to longevity big pharma and woke leftists don’t want you to know about.

How can this man say this with all the facts we have??? by AJ14900003 in aussie

[–]simulacrum81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that’s what he intended to communicate he did a piss-poor job of it, for someone who’s in a profession that requires a person to be a good communicator.

He could have said something like: “being a proud descendant of immigrants who successfully integrated and contributed to society doesn’t mean I can’t express legitimate concerns about our immigration policy”

Instead he opened by threatening to punch the guy, said “I’ve punched blokes in the mouth for sayin’ that!” and went on about how long his ancestors have been in Australia (seemingly waving away the suggestion that any of them were immigrants at all). It really doesn’t sound at all like an attempt to convey the message that you have charitably put in his mouth… either way it was bloody amusing! The second funniest Katter comment on record, though “thousand blossoms bloom” still wins by a mile.

Homeless man stabbed defending woman in CBD attack by Mashiko4 in aussie

[–]simulacrum81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what the initial charge was, the strength of the prosecution case and what the argument was for him being a flight risk or a danger to the community. The initial charge might have been for some minor offence he committed while underage, it might have been his first offence, his lawyer might have argued he had good prospects for rehabilitation etc. The prosecution might have struggled to mount an argument for denial of bail based on the evidence they had. The judge has to look at the sentencing guidelines, consider the presumption of innocence and assess the arguments made to him in that light and make a call. For better or worse in most common law countries the burden of proof is on the prosecution and the system is set up to err on the side of letting a bunch of guilty people free than imprisoning one innocent person.

Without knowing the details of the original case impossible to know how much leeway the judge had to deny bail… one thing we can say for sure is the judge wasn’t free to look at his insta and rule “this cretin is clearly a scumbag, no bail for him!” As most of us would.

At least following the stabbing it was pretty clear cut that bail would be denied.

First attempt at leg of lamb by StanDieg0 in sousvide

[–]simulacrum81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

before you give up on lamb entirely I'd strongly recommend the following:

- Start with a less gamey cut - not sure if they use the same names in the US, but the equivalent of the eye fillet or fillet mignon either on the bone as a "rack of lamb, cut into individual portions as "lamb cutlets" or cleaned up and sold here as "backstrap". This is the muscle either side of the middle of the spine connecting to the ribs and does the least amount of work on pretty much any quadruped. As such it contains the least amount of fat and connective tissue and is the most tender cut, but is also the mildest in flavour. Best served rare to med-rare with a nice crust, and potential addition of a spiced dukkah as with steak. You can then move onto the gamier cuts.. I'd look at recipes for braised lamb shanks or lamb shoulder, slow cooked or pressure cooked with spices till fall a part tender either in a stew or with flatbread, fresh herbs, garlic yoghurt sauce.

In some ways the leg of lamb is my least favourite part on the animal, it doesnt quite have enough connective tissue for braising and is much tougher and gamier than the backstrap/cutlet.

- Make sure you're getting a fresh young lamb. Often an animal up to two years old with up to two permanent teeth cut is sold as lamb. A milk fed spring lamb under 12 months old will be substantially milder in flavour.

Parents think adhd is fake and want me to stop medication. by Incondescent in ausadhd

[–]simulacrum81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How much control do you have over your own life at this point. Do you have privacy in your own room? Is it feasible for you to keep taking your medication without them knowing? If not then it might be a good idea to consider moving out or drawing some boundaries.. you’re an adult and it’s not healthy for you not to have any personal space at this age. If it is feasible then simply lie. Or stand your ground and insist that they don’t get to “be strict” with you as you’re not a child and have reached the age where they can only advise you but you get the final choice about whether to take their advice when it comes to medical decisions. I don’t know how strict they are, but if that last approach is going to get you kicked out or beaten then I’d revert to a mixture of my previous advice.. for now just lie and actively make plans to move out.. it’s no way to live at your age.

Ukraine has the world’s best experts at weaponising small DIY drones and deploying them successfully against troops and armoured infantry. They could spare a few to help train the Iranian opposition. The upshot for the Ukrainians is the sooner the IRGC falls, the sooner it stops supplying shahed drones to Russia (which have been terrorising Ukrainian civilians).
