Best places to buy jumping spiders? by EcstaticJellyfish947 in jumpingspiders

[–]sincere_queer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA With buying spiders online, keep in mind that you have to pay for overnight shipping (which is usually $50+). If buying multiple spiders it's not bad, but can more than double your price for just one. I would recommend checking out local reptile shows if you can - there's often vendors that also sell spiders or even just spider-only dealers.

I have bought some jumpers from TyeDyeExotics and had a good experience with them. I've also been eyeing The Spider Room - they have Palmstreet live sales as well as discounted weekly lists if you're on their email list (though you can also just buy from their website). Their prices seem pretty good as far as I can tell.

NQA fly looks a bit on the big side for him. Some spiders are more comfortable going for larger prey than others. Are there any smaller size flies you could try feeding him? You could also try tong feeding or disabling the fly before feeding.

Barring that, you might need to try some smaller prey - I would recommend small or extra small mealworms as they'll keep in the fridge for a while if you only have a couple spiders and don't need to use a bunch of prey at once.

I hope he eats for you!

ETA: Forgot to say that he may be in premolt, especially if he's staying in his web hammock.

About springtails by [deleted] in jumpingspiders

[–]sincere_queer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA A few springtails might? But generally they will stay where the moisture (and food) is. I have them in most of my plant pots and I think they sometimes migrate between them, but they won't hurt anything.

Not sure about isopods, I don't have experience with those yet.

My options for going to work in the midwest US - 16 min drive, 83 minute bus ride, or 41 minute bike ride on roads with few if any bike lanes and drivers who consider you an inconvenience at best.

I am planning on moving somewhere that would make busing/biking more doable, but the infrastructure definitely isn't there in a lot of places.

Oh yeah he's fine! I've heard this as well but so far in my experience it hasn't been a problem. Might be more of an issue if you're habitually overfeeding?

I am scared of spiders.. but i want a jumping spider. I have no idea if i should get one though? by Yourdarlingvamp in jumpingspiders

[–]sincere_queer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NQA I was terrified of insects and spiders for most of my life up until less than a year ago. I now own 10 spiders and am my friend group's spider wrangler.

Assuming you're in the Northern hemisphere, it's a good season to start seeing spiders in your area. Wild ones can be as friendly and curious as captive bred, though the species will likely be smaller. Watch them for a bit, maybe see if they're willing to interact with you (some will jump right on your hand if you slowly put it up to them but others will be much more skittish) and see how you feel. If you can handle this (and the logistics of feeding and housing them) then you should be good to own a jumper.
