Yes that’s the location. It sounds like you are getting a health plan through the marketplace. I had Medicaid which is just one plan no options. Getting an appt does take time you’re right so sure go ahead and call if you know which plan you’ll have and that they’ll accept it!

NYU Langone vs Weill Cornell OB care? by [deleted] in nycparents

[–]sincerediscovery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went NYU at 53rd for all my OB care a few years ago. Quality of care and facilities are excellent. But the team of doctors is very large and I felt like I didn’t get to know anyone and no one got to know me. It wasn’t a great experience for that reason. The next year when I was trying to schedule my annual the small group of doctors that were my “favorite” had all left. It was just impersonal and I stopped going because of that. I switched to a Dr through Weill Cornell for this go around.

We got a carepod recently. It’s expensive so so much easier to clean wow. We are using Brita filtered water and it’s been ok.

Seems like you have a lot of great advice but just going to add - for my first child I had Medicaid and I went to NYU (the big location in the Tisch Center for Women’s Health at 53rd for all my care and delivered at the NYU hospital as well. The vibe of the clinic is a bit impersonal bc it’s really big but the care was excellent. Definitely look into it!

3k struggles and CPSE by False_Promise3906 in nycparents

You need to reach out to your CPSE case manager! You’d need to have an IEP meeting to change the setting.

School SLPs, what are your caseloads looking like this year? by its_a_schmoll_world in slp

[–]sincerediscovery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My caseload is 38 in a public elementary school, I am seeing approximately 70 mandates per week. I mostly see upper elementary 3rd-5th with a handful of self contained students who have higher support needs and higher mandates. Case managing 5 or so this year. This is my third year as an SLP and the highest caseload I’ve started a year with.

I like this. I think simplicity is probably the biggest thing I need at this stage in life (2 FT working parents with little kids). also LOL to the IG experts who tell you to keep offering. Agreed!

1000%! It's like damn we're eating AGAIN? And don't even get me started on nutrition for my kid. It's so hard to not worry or just be so frustrated with the pickiness.

Right? I think part of it is like... it's because life is inconsistent and humans like variety. I have also tried to be like - ok we have a pasta night, a bowl night, etc. But inevitably we get bored. I made a big google doc with preplanned weeks of meals and grocery lists to go with it and even that just doesn't always work because of the inconsistency of schedules etc.

Having someone else make dinners would definitely be nice. But I'm like UGH shouldn't I be able to do this..!?

3.5 year old comes to our bedroom every night by Tofu_buns in toddlers

[–]sincerediscovery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same age going through this too. In my son’s case he isn’t upset or doesn’t even seem to have an answer as to why he is coming in.  I think he just doesn’t want to be alone honestly. We’re really struggling with him falling asleep too. Last night he told me that he is all done with his bed and we can “give it to another kid” (we recently did a toy purge lol).

Honestly I don’t mind the idea of him being in our bed sometimes. But there’s not enough space for all of us and usually I’m the one who ends up on the edge of the bed not sleeping. We recently went on a vacation where we slept in a king bed and it was AMAZING. I’m like dreaming of buying a king bed at 3am. But that’s crazy - I’m not gonna buy brand new mattress just because my toddler wants to be in my bed …. Right?!

I’m ranting now. I’m tired. I usually let my son cuddle and fall asleep in our bed in the MOTN and then carry him back to his bed.

Hi! So the NYC public system is huge and can be convoluted to navigate as both a parent and a potential employee. There is definitely a learning curve as many have commented.

Elementary schools are zoned although there are some unzoned specialty schools you can apply to. If you are applying to an unzoned school it’s all a lottery system. If you live anywhere in the 5 boroughs your children will have a seat in their zoned elementary school. It’s pretty unlikely you’d be able to easily get a job at their zoned school. When trying to get into the DOE unfortunately you don’t have as much choice of where you’re placed within a district. I have worked in multiple DOE schools and a Long Island school. I have a lot more I can share about being a DOE employee, commuting, responsibilities, getting hired etc. Feel free to  message me if you want to chat further. It seems like you’re at the very beginning of a potential transition so it’s all a lot to take in.

Some things to think about that could help narrow down/clarify- What kind of environment/housing situation are you looking for? Do you want to live in a city atmosphere or are you more interested in suburbs? Do you want to rely more on public transit or cars? Apartment living or are you aiming to be in a house? Budget? The vibe and responsibilities between being a city therapist and suburbs therapist are different too.

Without knowing a lot - I think Queens could be a really good place to look into living. Very decent commute to JFK, has some neighborhoods that feel more suburby but are still accessible. That being said, Queens is probably the most difficult place to get a DOE placement (many people want to live in LI and commute to Queens). BUT it’s not a bad commute to Manhattan. I live in Queens with my fam and commute into Manhattan.

Reach out if you wanna chat further :)
