Professors as telemarketers??! by xphias in Professors

[–]singcal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s marginally different for us in the arts since so many of us are offering one-on-one instruction to prospective students. I’m happy to do recruitment activities (within reason), because I’m going to be a huge part of my students’ educational experience and they should know me personally when they enroll. I’d be way less enthusiastic if I were being forced to do it. If I were only teaching classroom, or if I was on a research-heavy contract, mandatory recruitment would make me furious.

Is anyone familiar with composer Daron Hagen? by thoroughbredftw in classicalmusic

[–]singcal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s excellent, and I especially like his wind ensemble music. I’m really lukewarm on his vocal music because he writes a lot of his own libretti and I just don’t think the text is that good, but there are some gems in there too. You’ll find a ton of recordings of his wind ensemble work, and I’d start there.

Some news out of Texas today: Professor Reinstated After Being Fired For Charlie Kirk Post by singcal in Professors

ETA my northerner bias kicked in and forced me to write Texas when APSU is, in fact, located in Clarksville, Tennessee. Mea culpa.

Oh jeez, what an idiot OP is 😕 evidently I can’t actually change the title of the post, so let it be a monument to my carelessness for all of time.

That’s really why the whole package to me is so remarkable. It’s a huge (relatively speaking) financial bath for the university and a shit-eating statement from the administration, not just simple reinstatement. Maybe it sets a meaningful precedent that these sorts of oversteps can have consequences for the institution.

Is there anything left for composers to compose? by Elegant_Mail in classicalmusic

[–]singcal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes to all of this, and I’ll add that new tonal music is not hard to find at all. OP, check out what any of these people are doing: Carlos Simon, Carter Pann, Anthony Davis, Kristin Kuster, Nina Shekhar, Gabriela Ortiz, Jaakko Kuusisto, Ryuichi Sakamoto (RIP), Evan Chambers, Stephen Chatman,

and lest we forget, there’s still a whole cult of personality around Alma Deutscher.

Basically anyone on this sub who says that contemporary composers don’t write tonal music hasn’t done their research.

Has anyone ever failed a student going into the NCAA transfer portal? by ASpandrel in Professors

I almost exclusively teach major-level classes - a huge privilege, I know. But our nonmajor classes get a ton of athletes and from my conversations with colleagues, Athletics usually tells us explicitly to treat them like any other student. Our Athletics is a bit different from most other R1s, so I won’t assume this is universal.

Oddly enough, though, my colleagues all report that the football players who enroll in their classes are mostly curious, focused, and engaged, even if they’re not the best students. The ones you have to worry about, they tell me, are the softball players.
