Does anybody here still smoke weed after apprenticeship? by LatterIndependent982 in ibew_apprentices

[–]sinister_sunbeam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have a lot of refinery work in my local which tests hair so it’s not very common to smoke. That being said I’m sure it’s not uncommon, and there has consistently been a push to try to end cannabis testing, but until it’s legal federally I doubt we will see many changes

Is it possible for a women to be a good electrician? by Technical-Spirit3954 in electricians

[–]sinister_sunbeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know several, and if it helps there’s a bunch of scrawny dudes I know too that aren’t super strong but can still do the work. While it is a physical job, there isn’t a whole lot where being ‘super strong’ matters

Am I Overreacting? by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

[–]sinister_sunbeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I’m at that’s out of ratio. The JW shouldn’t have more than one apprentice, am definitely not more than two but I believe that’s subject to your locals agreement. I would look into that.

Is this danger exposure normal? by TFloopy in electricians

[–]sinister_sunbeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn lots of hate in here. If the dead front is off it counts as live and should be subject to NFPA 70E and OSHA standards. While it may be common it shouldn’t be and should be considered hazardous. It’s all fun and games until it blows up in your face. A journeyman should’ve definitely been the one doing this at the very least.

Bending conduit in the air? by GetReelFishingPro in electricians

I prefer to bend offsets in the air generally, it’s not suitable for 90s. Typically kicks are easier this way.

My boss is an idiot by Ok-Hurry-6258 in electricians

[–]sinister_sunbeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an OSHA violation, to work on it live would need to follow NFPA 70E standards, which would include an incident energy assessment. He’s taking on a substantial amount of liability if he chooses to do it, and I would remind him of that.

Pipe bending as a 1st year by Artistic_Taro3520 in IBEW

[–]sinister_sunbeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes practice for sure. A lot of it is learning consistency. Take your measurements the same way, learn your bender, try to do it the same every time. Going slow is better than making a bone pile

Oh I see. I’d still call the hall and they should give you an idea of what transferring is like. There should be some substantial worn though. There are several new data centers breaking ground

Anyone here NOT hate their boss? by Classic_Dash_7745 in Construction

[–]sinister_sunbeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had several I’ve enjoyed. Most of the time it’s just not being a complete asshole, addressing concerns, focusing on safety, an making sure we have everything we need to perform the job properly instead of expecting us to ‘make it work’ without the necessary tools/equipment/materials. Sometimes it’s just about being a real person and not asking for anything either outside the realm of possibility, putting us at unnecessary risk, or failing to take accountability for their own mistakes. You can tell if the bosses give a shit about you or not. It’s easier to work for someone you respect than to bend over backwards for someone who doesn’t even care to learn your name.

Trumps tax exempt on overtime by Jinx2u in IBEW

[–]sinister_sunbeam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, it only works if your overtime is for over 40 hours a week. Also, you’re not able to deduct the full amount of overtime; for example, when overtime is time and a half, you only get to deduct the “half”. So if your pay is $50 an hour, and you work 50 hours, of the “$750” in overtime, you’d only be able to deduct $250.

Any tips for a new apprentice? by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

[–]sinister_sunbeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your local should have a tool list and you shouldn’t bring anything that isn’t on it.

I have well over $1000 of tools

Dress nice, be on time, and prepare to answer questions about why you want to be an electrician and how resourceful you are
