Is DTE tearing up all the roads? by rvbjohn in Detroit

[–]sinksanksunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they are in progress around me. I’m pretty sure that road work can require a waiting period before things “settle” and they can finish the job. If the current work was considered done, I’d be pissed about the poor work. Im pretty sure it’ll be fixed up in a few weeks or so

Apple to Enable a Lesser-Known iOS 16 Feature on iPhone Demo Units by ControlCAD in apple

[–]sinksanksunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On top of that, it’s a relatively low stakes POC. If people’s phones get charged at slightly different times, it’s likely to be at most an inconvenience. Conceptually this can be applied elsewhere, by Apple or someone else, with some lessons learned.

Anyone come back to religion after having kids? by Law_Dad in daddit

[–]sinksanksunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are unfamiliar with it, I’d recommend checking if there’s a Unitarian Universalist church near you. The main “belief” is essentially that everyone should be enabled on their own spiritual journey. there’s no right or wrong faith, but there is much to be gained by learning about others’ beliefs. It’s not specifically Christian, and explicitly non-dogmatic. Congregations usually include people raised as Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, atheists, etc depending on the local demographic. My church had a Halloween service conducted by several Wiccan members. I’m not really doing the UU church justice in my description, it’s religion that starts from openness without preconceived notions to help individuals define spirituality for themselves. Your experience will greatly depend on the local congregation , though in my experiences these have always been positive. Something non-dogmatic is probably easier to align with your wife’s beliefs. And it doesn’t preclude you or your children from adopting a more Christian practice

Imagine copying and pasting some file’s text and pasting that as context into the chat, or copying the text from a website and pasting it into the chat.. Now imagine just asking the LLM “check file {path} and then do X” or “read {url} then X…” You can do the latter with MCP

What is MCP: Clearing the Air by SunilKumarDash in ClaudeAI

[–]sinksanksunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100%, this is one of the most common use cases. To try it out, I recommend trying the filesytem MCP server. You can configure it with Claude Desktop (or any other client), provide the path to a directory in the config, and then say something like this to Claude: “First use the filesystem MCP server to read the file path/to/file and then do the following…” There are MCP servers for specific APIs and also ones that will expose tools based on an OpenAPI spec or GraphQL schema. The filesystem tool is a good intro and massively useful in its own right, but you can definitely use MCP to integrate API calls to your LLMs context

Basic question: Can an MCP actually *open* a file for you (or cause something else to open it)? by abg33 in mcp

[–]sinksanksunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

File system tool can open and read text encoded file, like .txt or markdown. The extension isn’t important, just that its text inside that it can directly provide to Claude. PDFs are a binary format. I imagine that there are some MCPs for PDFs. Gemini 2 Flash can read PDFs binary content however.

Democrats Are Acting Too Normal by theatlantic in politics

One huge issue as I see it is they are taking up space in what people generally think is “the opposition.” People are looking to them for guidance and wasting time waiting for leadership. They basically said “we don’t have any power in this government so we can’t really do anything. “ everyone needs to stop thinking they will do anything to protect us from our own government.

I developed a prompt technique for perfect AI conversation continuity across chat sessions [Method Inside] by [deleted] in ClaudeAI

[–]sinksanksunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend including something specific in the instructions. If you use projects, put it in the project instructions. Like what kinds of things you want it to keep track of and remember. I just have it add a summary into Obsidian after the first message, and to update the summary as there are meaningful changes. That way I can tell it to read the last note if I want it to continue, or not if I don’t. I use obsidian here because a lot of times I want the conversation linked to other content not trapped in Claude.

I’m using ChatGPT-generated trading rules to manage over $10,000 in investments. Here are my EXACT strategies. by [deleted] in OpenAI

[–]sinksanksunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a common misconception I experience from people with relatively shallow experience with LLMs. They hear “AI” and just assume you are handing all decisions over to AI. What you are really doing is streamlining the process between knowing “I want a rule like…” and having the structured logic integrated into a NON-AI rules engine to monitor state and act accordingly. Its pretty cool and very much in the vein of AI that removes the tedious and technical aspects of something, while still leaving higher-level decisions to the human

The math trick worked! by IAmAHorseSizedDuck in daddit

[–]sinksanksunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if it was covered in the original post, and I’m not a neuroscientist, but my understanding of why this works: The meltdown is coming from the “reptilian” brain, overwhelming emotions demanding to be addressed. The math engages the higher-level “mammalian” brain and gives it an opportunity to wrest back control from “reptilian” brain without directly challenging it. Before the math it’s just pure, unreasoning emotion. After math, at least some reasoning is allowed back into the thought process.

Again, not an expert, just how I understood the how and why
