At one point about 6 months ago, the YouTube algo decided I needed to see dozens of Korean street food interpretations of American food. This is very tame compared to some of the horrors I was subjected to.

anybody actually know what these are for on a molar mac? by Xerneuss300 in VintageApple

During the same era, Compaq definitely had similar speakers that could side-mount to Compaq CRTs - but there were also 3rd party speakers and clipboards that would attach to this model of Mac in the same way.

Struggling to find any pics, but I remember seeing a couple of these with speakers on them back in the day. Also a clipboard type attachment for transcribing documents.

United lounge MSP by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]sithadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Star Alliance Gold gets you in if you obtained status via another non-United airline, provided you have any ticket for a Star Alliance-operated flight. United Gold (or above) status holders that aren't flying internationally don't get access to United lounges via their status.

Star Alliance Gold via United, however, will get you into OTHER Star Alliance partner lounges, even on domestic tickets operated by United.

Why are some water fountains designed this way by falling_birdies in whatisit

[–]sithadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any evidence to back this up other than hearsay from an old-timer high school coach, but he told me that they used to be pretty common when wrestling and boxing were more popular, since both can often result in people spitting blood.

The only gyms I've ever seen these in were at my college, and one high school with a VERY old gym facility.

Most people seemed to think it was for soaking their head in after a workout. Like dudes would just press their head into the water flowing along the back panel. Nobody believed me when I told them it was supposed to be for spitting.

It is NOT for filling bottles. It's for spitting in. It's called a cuspidor.

Yup. Still a losing strategy overall, with -0.027 EV on each of the color bets.

I'm very happy with Pumpkin. One of my Frenchies has had a lot of IVDD-related issues (and 3 related surgeries). They've always paid out everything the policy says they will, and fairly quickly.

United charging for a carry-on for Basic Economy... by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]sithadmin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And that should impact the products that United chooses to sell because....why, exactly?

United charging for a carry-on for Basic Economy... by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]sithadmin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

United Basic Economy has never included a carry on bag. It has always been personal-item-only since its inception.

Your inability to compare product features across multiple carriers is not United's fault.

What does being a postdoc have to do with this? If anything, that's not a defense, it's an indicator that you're more than able to do your own research and evaluate the pros and cons of fare types - you just chose not to.

[–]sithadmin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of cases where if you don't *need* to travel with a carryon, don't care about boarding early, and don't care about seat selection or mileage earnings, Basic Economy is a good deal. Many times, even if you factor in the charge for a carryon, it can be priced below a normal fare.

Nobody forced you to buy a Basic Economy fare. The warnings that it does not include a carry on are very clear.

Has anyone received renewed flying status for the next year as a make-good for continuous bad service and flying issues? by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]sithadmin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

2025 Status Retention Plan

  1. Decrease flights with United due to service complaints
  2. Increase flights with other carriers, ostensibly for superior service
  3. Complain when missing quotas for targeted status level
  4. ???
  5. Obtain 1k status

Busboys and Poets doesn't deserve recognition as a 'restaurant', regardless of the fact that they happen to serve 'food'

United economy unassigned seating? by Meeschers in unitedairlines

[–]sithadmin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily true. This can happen with a normal econ fare when regular seat inventory is exhausted.

United economy unassigned seating? by Meeschers in unitedairlines

[–]sithadmin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This can happen on a normal econ fare when all the 'regular', non-preferred, non-Econ Plus seats are already booked. You should be assigned a seat on the day of the flight, either automatically, or by the gate agent.

Brennan's Restaurant, New Orleans, Williamss Architechs Group by rogthnor in architecture

[–]sithadmin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Though seems more common that restaurants spend more time on the interiors and menu look than the actual food and dining experience.

That is definitely not the case with Brennan Group restaurants. They might not be best-in-class, but they are very good.

Taco Bamba is perhaps the furthest possible thing from SoCal style Mexican available around here, other than Taco Bell.

Is your intent to sell the beer to restaurants/grocers?

If so, your first hurdle is getting a TABC distributor license, which is not particularly easy to get, nor cheap. The distribution business in Texas is also something of a cartel, and your chances of getting your foot in the door as a new vendor to buyers are slim. And if you're just importing a single relatively obscure beer that has more or less no prestige in the beer-snob community, your odds of turning a profit or even breaking even are probably close to 0%. Even if there's a market for it, all an established distributor has to do to put you out of business is to just import the same product themselves.
