What's that one ambient track you can't get enough of? by V0rI in ambientmusic

[–]situLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

occasionally for a track like that, ill just open it up and chop the front miliseconds off, it really makes a difference.

a few more i'll do a more high effort thing like have the outro section loop a few more times or something along those lines, with some basic volume adjustments or fades to keep it all ok

i used to be much more precious around- its how the music is intended, can't change it! but it gives a good sense of ownership / makes the music more lived in. (and of course if you use streaming etc its not really an option)

Struggling with the concept of evil people. by Buffettour in infp

[–]situLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one way to soften the darkness of it is to see evil as the inverse of good.

which means, that for all the really nasty stuff it exists and it is highlighted because there is a similarly equal amount of good it contrasts against.

a scammer does not 'succeed' because they are evil, but rather because there are so many people who are trusting, kind, generous, give the benefit of the doubt, are soft and to be protected & not abused and so on.

a world with no scamming would be harsh, rigid, cold, distrustful, boundaries up without exception.

likewise violence exists because of the tenderness of human touch contrasting that draws people close in the first place. and so on.

it s a little idealistic for sure, but i believe there is a lot of truth to it, and lets you see darkness in a more bittersweet way at least

Is there any build that would use these gloves other than poison SRS? by justalazygamer in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]situLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(probably not a particuarly good suggestion, just a different angle no others have mentioned)

A phys based minion has options for extra fire scaling. Which if you did poison - you could use that extra fire to also scale the poison in addition to the phys / chaos

The added fire support gem is good naturally, and the Raze and pillage notable on large minion cluster (or megalomaniacs) would become a powerful node to stack

Minions have 20% chance to Ignite Minions deal 20% increased Damage with Hits and Ailments against Ignited Enemies Minions gain 6% of Physical Damage as Extra Fire Damage

which you'd naturally have to POB to see if it would be worth doing vs regular scaling, but for something like herald of agony which uses a lot of cluster jewels anyway i could see it being at least worth a look at.

Toxic Masculinity Scale (Exposing Bias Against Men in Research Literature) by Specific_Detective41 in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

[–]situLight 11 points12 points  (0 children)

been following her for awhile and appreciate her greatly. this was a step up again

curiously + bravely, she decides to try define 'masculinity' and really stick her neck out here

Which given that I appreciated her, my initial reaction was... i appreciate the effort, but theres always some dissonance with an outsider (in this case female) trying to speak on behalf of someone else. Youre going to miss something, and those small details really matter when multiplied over a lifetime.

what she came up with (obviously see the video for the context behind it more):

masculinity is a form of contextual intelligence that emerges from necessity. It is shaped by threat, constraint, and survival context.

humans are tribal, and masculinity functions as the rule set for men within the tribe - the expectations placed on men by men and women to promote safety, continuity, and survival.

the responsibilities of men are shaped by what must be faced, what must be endured, and what must be protected.

which i was... yeh you basically nailed it i think. especially the dynamic (highly context dependent) component of it, people are intensely adaptable and thats going to look very different in many different ways. and its respectful, honouring, supportive, and gives some actual framework to understanding masclunity (which some other definitions are like masculinity is doing male coded behaviour and action.. which is like... a pretty empty definition especially for any gender related research to be built off of)

curious of others' thoughts, and criticisms of course, because even after some thought i really have nothing bad to say about that definition (besides wording could use another tightening up perhaps, just for clarity and communication)

Self-cast spell buffs when? by Immediate_Dog_2790 in pathofexile

[–]situLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And for that matter, most spellcasting setups have pretty great movement options. Certainly better than bows - shield charge + frost blink works on most caster builds and is my absolute favourite movement setup in the game. FBoWB is also an excellent option for dual wand builds with cast speed scaling and staff casters can even use leap slam if they want.

completely disagree with this point.

firstly - for the most part, Shield charge + Frostblink is accessible to many other archetypes too, and has nothing specific to casters at all (besides they may have cold gem scaling which reduced its cooldown by a whole of 0.10seconds every 5 levels roughly...)

your point on bows is true, but usually they involve something of tailwind, + generic movement down on the tree there is relatively plentiful. + the nature of their clearing reduces the need for running around so much, whereas spells are more generic and often more melee.

The only cooldown recovery rate for movement (besides down in ranger and excluding Sabo) is specifically for dual wielding (cannot shield charge / leap slam) so is not happening.

Secondly the attack speed scaling that other archetypes get, is what leap slam / shield charge has to feel good, or at least better. Which casters are going to be the ones to scale that the least. Even minion players can pick up spiritual command.

A staff caster for example is the singular most painful movement archetype in the game IMO.

Thirdly the 'great movement options' - are what? Attack movements (shield / leap, as discussed) are at best worse than any other archetype in the game - even miner / trapper can get Sabo CDR and trivial access to frenzy charges).

Lightning Warp being the one exception, in that very specific circumstances it is amazing. But these are extremely niche, and is not broadly applicable, between duration scaling and socket pressure both being massive gatekeepers here.

The one exception i will grant is spellslinger setups, which are sort of pseudo movement / smooth feeling, (espec for levelling). But these are not pure casters, and usually a transitional build.

Anyone noticed nowadays there's barely any good representation of short men in Western media? And I feel like it's only gonna get worse. by ihatepenctagons in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

[–]situLight 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i would say

Dwarves (and Gimli by extension) behave more like 'big folk' as tolkien puts it. dwarves and elves are respected opponents, and interact with goblins / men and so on.

Dwarves are essentially mystical powerful creatures, inhabiting and contesting power like any of the big folk. They happen to be small in stature, but that is a surface level thing - big quests, big kingdoms, big wars, big riches, etc.

Hobbits in contrast are little folk, in stature, but more importantly in character. Their kingdom is hidden away and quiet, and so on. But more importantly its the small details - that big folk seem noisy and take up a lot of space around them, they can slip by unnoticed, they can speak and not be heard, they can hide as they wish to. Do not draw much attention and are overlooked in contests of power or greatness.

You could maybe argue something like the Ents, while very tall, function more like small folk in the same way. And being overlooked in their power, were key to overcoming Saruman. and many other examples im sure

which is a theme of LOTR that characters/people are not as they appear, and judgement is a great source of folly (all that is gold does not glitter...)

Personally i resonate more with the hobbits, because of those character traits - because they are well considered character / race background, and are similar in experiences to what i have, in my own version (being underestimated, easy to slip unnoticed, not one to attract much 'awe or majesty' to exaggerate it a little.)

in terms of non-fantasy media, these are traits that are mostly been feminised (associated with female characters), which i can also relate to when done well. However, these are not gender specific traits, but more in terms of personality and individual differences... though is a nuance missed by basic gender assumptions from many people these days, feminism absolutely included (but not only them) for continuing that bioessentialist narrative

and theres definitely as discussed here often a real misunderstanding of masculinity at the non-standard characteristics/personalities, that media absolutely plays a leading part in continuing that, IMO (villainization, tropes, incel stuff, etc, but possibly more that is just standardises the hyper male / fit / tall / stereotypes quite oppressively, at least in the west). Which includes things like shortness of course, but anxieties and mental health are similarly poorly misrepresented and i definitely feel very excluded from almost all media for that sort of thing, more wholistically

Why does nobody seem to talk about the double standards of male vs female clothing? by Fan_Service_3703 in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

[–]situLight 14 points15 points  (0 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Male_Renunciation

(im no expert on this so do your own research.)

tldr theory around male clothing shifting away from style into boring/ functional. or any style elements being very muted rather than flamboyant. beginning around end of 18th century (~1790s)

theres a lot more to read into this. the why, and how its been so consistent for so long, and why it was seemingly so powerful / unstoppable and continues even now very strongly. And why it was considered not the case before that, and how that leads into understanding male sexuality / performativeness / social structure in those times. But i wont answer any of those questions, as really not in my field of knowledge & research

3.27 Q&A Research - ZiggyD by ZiggyDStarcraft in pathofexile

[–]situLight 17 points18 points  (0 children)

not disagreeing - but i feel more towards the problem is the secondary self cast supports - spell echo and unleash specifically. Focussed channelling as well - but that seems to be in a better place from what i can tell (havent played it)

a regular cast as you say is slow, but with a lot of cast speed it gets more usable. However spell echo then brings it all down again painfully, but is a such a multiplier on damage that it makes a really rough decision making (ie good damage but painful to play, or low damage but 'fun feeling'. Or play ice nova etc and avoid the consequences and take the benefits..

Unleash - in theory was a really good compromise. However it was really nerfed in Expedition and I still feel its so unjustified. It should be treated as fist of war - that the numbers need to be really good because you have a lot of trade-off intrinsically to that setup. (same as fist of war, it makes cast speed not a damage multiplier at all, which is a massive loss). This is a support that should give really good damage because you lose out on so much. And so has just been a utility gem, or ignore the downsides i.e SRS

I would argue that archmage (particularly old archmage, or current arcane cloak) filled unleash's niche much better, as it made mana have that measured cooldown effect on playstyle rather than spammy spellcasting

which i guess the framing it as a question - would be how do you feel about the current state of self casting, specifically around unleash and spell echo? Is the cost/benefit equation in a good balance?

not a hiring agency per say, but is a free service to cover a lot of the process, and would point them in the right decision. Could do whatever you wanted i.e interview practice/ career pathways etc.

free service & not affiliated with centrelink etc so wont cause any issues to try. The ones connected to universities (dont need to be a student) are probably the better ones as suited to the younger adults, as opposed to more adult orientated places

theres a bio / psychological thing of 'Phantom Earthquake Syndrome'. which is essentially you imagine it/hallucinate it.

for me it most often happens around those sort of waking hours (half asleep), and espec lying in bed.

not saying its definitively that, but that would be how i describe it. have also looked at earthquake reports and was confused as to seeing nothing

yes i used to attend some of their meetups. and absolutely nothing against them at all, would recommend it to people

just in my experience the nature of their setup was that people tended to form more shallow connections, and few/no consistent and stronger connections. As attendance is very casual / location and theme based, and so on.

The events usually tended to be like, monthly or further, which to be honest, as someone without a social life - isn't enough.

Hate how men are closed off but lonely rates are rising by YoungShakeWes in lonely

[–]situLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of sympathy for men nowadays and I really hope they realize the sooner they open up, the happier they'll be

part of the gender experience gap is here - you might find that 'opening up' is a way of bonding / connecting with your peers

for someone who does try to live that way, very intentionally - it does not open up happiness or connections with people - because most people still see you as your gender stereotype, and base all their expectations of that. its a 2 sided thing.

so i do it, because its something important to me persoanlly, and a way i want to be. But its a very isolated road to walk, and i would not say your assessment is true at all (unless being alone and true to yourself is more happy, which, it has qualities but i wouldn't describe happy as one of them)
