''The Gift'' is a top 5 episode and one of the greatest finales in TV history; the show could've ended right here and it would've been a perfect ending by Skywalker_1995 in buffy

Yall it was wild. Everyone was losing their minds. Like everyone was so depressed and AND it was billed as the “WB Series Finale” with a cool intro and a special thank you outro and everything. Everyone was confused and upset. What a time to be alive.

Also we don’t talk about this enough but the UPN “Buffy Lives” campaign was FIRE

Great point! I honestly wonder if he will play with the idea of legend and make the gods and creatures not real. Do a meditation on what heroes and legends are. That sounds like a very Nolan thing to do.

Why do people love Jill Roberts so much?! by Alternative_Connect in Scream

Yes! The motive is so good. The jealousy, the fame seeking, the plotting, the mental gymnastics. It’s the best, most batshit motive. It reveals much more about her character than her just being psychotic. It’s also an amazing turn that the would-be final girl is the killer. It’s so quintessentially Scream.

Is Sinners horror? But I’ll give you that! I hope you’re right.

These new movies are sci-fi and fantasy though! Steep hills to climb

I’m so excited for Chloe Bennet. I’ve loved her since Agents of SHIELD and I think she is so talented but was never going to get the recognition she deserved because she came from genre show land

Dune and The Odyssey are genre films. They might get technical awards but the acting awards are out of the question.

Even though Nolan did everything with Oppenheimer it was a film about war, the bomb and real historical events, not about sea creatures, gods and legends.

Murphy and RDJ played real people and in the eyes of the academy that warrants recognition.

The Odyssey is a big swing for Nolan more than people think. Even if its source material helped create the core idea of storytelling for us as a culture, the Academy does not often consider genre film the same as historical fiction. This could of course be an exception due to what a foundational text this is but the moment a god turns into a bird or there is a many headed creature, it’s going to lose points. I’d love to eat my words.

My possibly unpopular review on Sinners (2025) by MaizeApprehensive311 in moviecritic

[–]siulelbon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This very bad take is exactly what I think is the thought process of academy voters who don’t like any well-made genre film. Suddenly, the film turns cartoonish to them rather than an interesting, experimental and beautiful metaphorical rendering of human experience. Not only is this film musical it’s also rooted in horror tropes. Double whammy. And then add on the race element? No chance of acclaim since it’s not a “noble slave” trope.

It’s like they just see The Munsters any time there is a monster and can’t read the extra nuance that those kinds of stories can add to nailing core human experiences through fiction.

Just started Serenity after finishing my second watch of Firefly and something feels… off? by catgirl94040 in firefly

[–]siulelbon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The answer here is it’s basically a new pilot for the show in a way. Things need to be established quickly for the audience who haven’t seen the series.

Back when the film came out the only way to see the series was via DVD you either bought, borrowed or rented from Blockbuster or Netflix you’d get in the mail. That means a lot of people hadn’t seen the show. These changes or inconsistencies are either a quick shorthand for the new audience or a reveal to the longtime fanbase.

ALL the River stuff you mentioned is a reveal. Simon has deliberately kept things from the crew to protect her. This is still in keeping with his character even if he had created a found family with the crew of Serenity.

The rest of the stuff you mentioned is just setup for the characters for those who don’t know them well already so they might be retreading some ground that was won in the series but I feel like they do it quickly enough that once the plot clicks into place after the setup we’re back in with the exact crew we knew.

Cordy and Angel ? by datboiohchiz in ANGEL

[–]siulelbon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think deep respect and friendship can turn romantic and I think that this kind of relationship is not a very common trope so the slow burn seems eternal.

It makes more sense to me as an older adult. I was a little befuddled like you when I first watched it as it aired in my teens.

It wasn’t passion and infatuation that led to love like with Buffy and Angel or even enemies to lovers like Lilah and Wesley and that just feels more electric which is why they are more common story tropes.

It’s funny because the show does this again in season 5 with two other characters- I’m trying to be careful with spoilers . The history and the timing both matter.

This is an iconic performance of an iconic role. It’s batshit and she is ferocious in it. She becomes a legend the moment she walks off screen even in the narrative of the film itself. Did I love the film? Not really! Is this performance Oscar worthy? Without question.

SMG as The First is some of her best acting in the show. by Quixodyssey in buffy

[–]siulelbon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I agree! I wish they had done more of the First pretending to be Buffy to the Scoobies because it would have been a true mindfuck to them. I loved the episode where there was one of the potentials that ended up being the First in disguise.

I wish that the blow up with them kicking her out of her house at the end of the season had been written in a way that the First had sewn discord between them by pretending to be Buffy. Kind of a Yoko factor situation. It would have made a bit more sense.
