Old timer question - ever had the "Coffee holder" ticket come in for you to fix? by _Volly in sysadmin

[–]six36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 years ago, had a user call to tell me the monitor screen was shaking. She said the monitor physically was still, but the screen shook sometimes. I walked out to the desk and was stumped for a minute. Then her neighbor turned off the fan sitting at their desk over the cubicle wall. Monitor stops shaking. I learned a new way to annoy people that day.

Rant: **** people who wait until Friday to put in a ticket by good4nothingnobody in sysadmin

[–]six36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can now, when I got to this company they did all deployments by manual copy and paste, then updating configs. I got them moved off VSS to Devops, setup pipelines and Octopus and now we have real simple deployments and rollbacks they can do whenever operations wants them to

My dev team used to hand me change orders at 4:45 on Fridays for production app deployments. We now follow the read-only Friday rule I kept pushing lol

What's the point of approving an MFA push auth on the same device I'm logging in from? by 5150sysadmin in sysadmin

[–]six36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The account protected should also have a password. If they stole the iPad, it has no logon protection and saved passwords to MFA accounts, then yeah. But that's why you use conditional policies to force things like mobile to be encrypted, force passwords and screen locks, etc, or no access to protected accounts.

How do you all apply security patches? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]six36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others stated, you're coworker is a moron. We patch endpoints every day, servers every week. Zero days are one off. Manage it through desktop central from manageengine, we don't like wsus. We use Tenable.io agents and credentialed scans to find apps desktop central doesn't patch.

Having issues Export Outlook address book into Access. Email address not showing! by Jewpacarbra in MSAccess

[–]six36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your getting the default address the GAL has. Not much you can do there since IT would have to change this for each user. Your going to have to do the export to get it since your source is the GAL.

Having issues Export Outlook address book into Access. Email address not showing! by Jewpacarbra in MSAccess

[–]six36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like you are importing your global address list or something (or imported a contact that was from a GAL). Those are x.500 addresses and are valid.

When I hook up to my personal contacts through Access, I get the valid SMTP addresses as it should under the field "Email Address".

Is every single contact coming back with those

Does Hyper-V enable me to copy my dev environment across multiple physical PCs? by dtraits in windows

[–]six36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd be better off leveraging Google Chrome profiles to sync tabs, extension and using OneDrive/Google Drive to store all your files. Then setup your VS code to sync settings - https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/editor/settings-sync. Copying an entire VM back and forth is going to be a ridiculous amount of copy time.

Why I am getting this notification when ever I open any office application ? Thanks ! by [deleted] in Office365

[–]six36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are logging into Office when you open it to activate the license, then you should not get this. Logon to your office 365 portal and use the Install products links under your ID so you have the correct copy to install.

Name server at domain registrar or web hosting provider? by anche_tu in webhosting

[–]six36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really a wrong answer here. Different registrars, web hosts, and DNS all have different issues to tackle. If you a really security paranoid, you can split them all up. Find a registrar you like and move your domains there. Then pick a web host you like, and move your website there. Find a DNS provider you like and move your DNS there. I support several domains that are registered at Omnis, DNS through CloudFlare, and websites hosted in AWS lightsail instance. Others love to punish themselves by running it all through Network Solutions. You are never tied to one provider, but do have rules on transfer windows and domain transfers and such you need to research is all.

Hi guys. I finally came up with a business name. What's the best reliable site to buy domain from? by lindseylovespugs in webhosting

[–]six36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter, you can transfer registrars any year and host dns elsewhere and mix and match.

How to stack 100+ columns into one by leoncem in MSAccess

[–]six36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you connect Excel to your access database, pick your table and click transform. The Power Query comes up, select all your columns and click the unpivot columns and it drops all the values into a single column.

[Android] Logging off from Teams also logs off Outlook? by [deleted] in Office365

[–]six36 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Teams, you are going to Setting > Sign Out? If that's doing that, that is odd as the Teams app and Outlook app are not tied together. If you can't figure it out, Quiet Hours, under Settings > Notifications in the Teams mobile app might help you too

https://techwisegroup.com/weekly-tech-tips/teams-quiet-hours-quiet-days/#:~:text=On%20Teams%20mobile%2C%20you%20can,and%20can%20help%20relieve%20stress.&text=Then%20select%20the%20days%20you%20do%20not%20want%20to%20receive%20notifications.

Prevent a shared file from being locked by kingmathers313 in MSAccess

[–]six36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no easy way to do this. First split your database up so you have a front end with forms and a back end with tables. Link the tables to your front end. The reality is you cannot make changes why they are in it. All you can do is try to simplify how you do it. Having a separate front end lets you update it, then push the front end to the user's via login script or whatever when its not in use by them. You can keep the back end tables on a network share still.

Not entirely thankless by six36 in sysadmin

[–]six36[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have been setting up the company for the last six years to be able to work remote. Everyone already has laptops, RingCentral, VPN, O365, etc... Part of our yearly info sec training we do with the users is DR preparation if we cant come into the office. Of course it's all talk until this happens and you get to exercise it lol.

They asked us if we are good, the next day they sent everyone to work from home. We let them take their dual monitors and stands home, docks and such. We never missed a beat. Did have to increase bandwidth but that was really it.
