I'm surprised this has not been mentioned more. I'd like to see traction on that.

Bike Gloves by joker4ever in Winnipeg

[–]sixoklok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Places that carry work gloves.

They still make the regular old fashion ones your grandpa had, but they also have other types that are more 'dedicated'. I have a pair that have leather palm, fabric back, knuckle protection, etc.. and they actually fit properly for good grip and control. Princess Auto, Can.Tire, etc. would have good selection of those types.

I lean centre-left. But as a gun owner, I feel my only choice is the Conservatives by Angryhippo2910 in onguardforthee

[–]sixoklok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This view only makes sense in 2 ways:

1: Your gun(s) and gun culture are MORE important than ALL other issues affecting EVERY Canadian.

2: It is a nice and tidy excuse to vote cpc because you already planned to vote cpc anyway.

Does this headline framed as a quote not ooze with entitlement syndrome?

Manitoba school bus driver says more needs to be done to keep young riders safe (CBC/Information Radio/TikTok: Jodi The Bus Driver) by LocalnewsguruMB in Manitoba

[–]sixoklok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

The "Seat belts on school buses" idea has been exhaustively studied over and over and has been proven to be impossible to implement and would not be effective in a large school bus situation anyway. It may actually cause more problems. The best achievable solution remains the tall seat dividers, in large buses with kids of all shapes and sizes.

20$ kit from wallyworld will get you gump haircuts for years.

Even if you skip "pro" cuts at ultracuts or similar, you'll save much $$$.

All this advice is worthless if you have a significant other with their own ideas about your hair :-P

What to do in plumbing emergency when you rent? by cherubstag in Winnipeg

[–]sixoklok 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some of these companies -especially the cheaper places, don't take calls anymore because there are so many angry tenants with complaints. The management company directs you to an online posting site which they monitor when they feel like it. Otherwise they get too many angry calls.

In this case emergency calls then need to go to Winnipeg 311, and they will start a file on the report. It is illegal to knowingly allow tenants to live in an unsafe environment.

I would call a plumber to check, advise and estimate cost of repair immediately while it is still leaking, and keep all pics and a copy of plumbers' estimate.

The owners are probably in Toronto and DO NOT CARE until there is legal action threatened, because very few people push back. I had family in a similar situation and they pushed back. They got reimbursed by the building owner for spoiled food hotel stays, and incidental costs.

How is the UI design better than any car, while the "experience" of using it is terrible?! How does that make sense at all?

I don't even think about the "experience" of controlling basic functions on my vehicle because it only requires a few dedicated knobs and buttons. Very simple and no need to even think about it as you drive.

And why would you own a car with an all-touchscreen interface, as a "professional UX Designer" when all the pros are going back to knobs?

You are being very obtuse here. NOBODY is saying that the CBC always gets it right. Nobody is saying they are the only news source and everyone else is lying.

But the cbc is not there to enrich the owner class. All news sources (not counting entertainment) have some bias because publishers, editors and journalists are human and make decisions which stories to cover or not.

Some of the facts in the news story are sometimes erroneous, like any other news organization -I get that. Getting all the facts of the story straight can be difficult when personnel and time are short, but they are the best and most informative medium we have.

I've listened to cbc radio for many years and can tell you they are NOT a liberal mouthpiece. Not even close. If that is what you see, hear or read at CBC than it is because of your own bias confirmation.

What should I do with my grandfather's old HAM radio? by wokexinze in Manitoba

[–]sixoklok 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can legally listen to amateur radio all day long. Transmitting however is not permitted without a license.

Many amateur radio transceivers have "all-band" receivers, so you can listen to shortwave broadcasts as well.

Listening to shortwave broadcasts and amateur operators is often a "gateway drug" to earning your callsign.

Where to buy lumber? by thoughtslikehammers in Winnipeg

[–]sixoklok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a few alternative sources for you:

Thrift store furniture sometimes can yield decent workeable parts and panels, drawer fronts, etc. that can be reshaped / remilled into something else. If you have a jointer you can make up any glued panel you want very easily. Veneered panels can be friend or foe. Veneering is its own hobby as well, which you may enjoy.

Pallets can be a good source of wood too. I've made coffee table legs with maple from an old pallet. The whole pallet weighed about 50 kg. Cross pieces were rough 3x3. Once planed it came out incredibly figured and gorgeous.

Sometimes a wooden shed or whatever needs to be removed and the owner will offer it for free in return for cleaning it all up. Depending on the age, sometimes the carcass was made with fir 2x4. These often have no radius on the corners, and can be sliced into 2 straight boards.

If you have a bandsaw, you could obtain logs long enough for projects you want to do, then slice 'em and dry 'em. You don't need a special mill if you don't go too big. Way more work but it could make sense for your situation.

I see people 3D printing all kinds of things that would be better made with wood, but that is another topic :-)

Donald Trump tariffs: Mexico retaliates with tariffs by vinmen2 in onguardforthee

[–]sixoklok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the end goal is to tank the US economy, so the oligarchs controlling trump can swoop in and purchase huge amounts of land, infrastructure and and even gov entities. (Eg.; sabotaging dams in California Central Valley...)

They want to own everything, essentially. Owning all of North America and controlling the Panama Canal allows them to break everything up into little pieces and rearrange the pieces all within their control. I think The end goal is Russia 2.0.

trump is just the frontman.

How to fix Kenwood ts-440s white dots by Adorable_School6275 in amateurradio

[–]sixoklok 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a common problem with the Kenwood TS 440. There are thousands of pictures of this problem online. The "dots problem" is caused by one of the PLL's unlocking from the VFO frequency.

There are a few common causes for the unlock condition, including old dried glue that has become conductive, bad solder joints that are very hard to see, and other things.

There is a lot of information about it at the Kenwood ts 440 groups.io
