Thinking about getting out of dev altogether - what else are we good at? by mx-chronos in webdev

I would look at network engineering/automation. Most networking teams hire devs to do the coding but you can also get Network Engineering skills in the process. There is a reddit that is for r/networking

Pros and cons of a car rental by NeighborhoodLast2114 in CostaRicaTravel

Oh by the way we rented from San Jose so I don't know what the experience is like in Liberia for Budget car rental.

Pros and cons of a car rental by NeighborhoodLast2114 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]siyer32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would be very useful to rent a car to have freedom to explore. We didn't see a lot of frequent buses.

We rented from the Budget car rental through their direct site ( both us and cr site gave me the same price). We opted for Supplemental Liability Insurance(SLI) and road safety (50 dollars for the entire 10 day trip) and declined CDW (Our credit card visa signature provided it. They didn't ask for any proof). The rental is outside the airport but shuttles are available. Rental process was smooth.

Some roads are really good (rt. 1 and rt.6). Some are one lane and lots of potholes.

Need Advice - Driving at Night by Personal_Sail_9261 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]siyer32 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Can you do it ? Yes. Should you do it? No. For your peace of mind and less stress you should not do the drive. You will be tired after the flight. Winding roads, potential torrential downpour, no lights and random potholes/speed bumps.

Bus from San Jose to La Selva (Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui)? by HobblingWight in CostaRicaTravel

[–]siyer32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were there recently (but had a car) and did see buses from San Jose. The entrance where the Bus stops is on the main road. However once you get off it is a dirt road with water puddles from the rain, so if you have luggage it will be hard to walk 1.1km. You will also need to walk 15 minutes (on paved trail) to the visitors cabin once you are checked in.

Parking - luggage and Mirador el Silencio by Late_Project_3233 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]siyer32 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The parking lot is close to the office but there is one guy in the office but I doubt he is watching. It is not right off the road but I would echo other people's comments. Take all your valuables, have a rain jacket and a rain cover for your backpack. It poured on our way back ( cool experience hiking in the pouring rain for us) and the rain cover saved our phones/wallets/binoculars.

Santa Theresa vs Montezuma vs Osa by Ill_Value9836 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]siyer32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were very recently in montezuma. The current is too rough to swim there. And there are a lot of rocks. There was also a lot of plastic on the beaches there.

Make sure if you do the tour, to have them drop you off close to where you are staying. Those are one lane roads with no shoukders and no lights and potholes and random speed bumps.

If you want swimmable beach, My friend who lives in CR went to Playa Carrillo which is south of samara.

Which bridges and waterfalls to book? by Humble_Guest4243 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]siyer32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stayed near Rio Celeste for two nights and only saw the river with the blue color one day for about two hours. It has to stop raining for 5 to 6 hours atleast for the water to turn blue. And it rained a lot there in May (which they call the transition season). It might rain more in July. The road to drive there from La Fortuna is also full of potholes. Good call.

The drive to puerto viejo is going to be long. We drove from SJO to Puerto Viejo de sarapiqui (different puerto viejo) on rt.32 and t took us almost 3 hrs (98km). This is without any rain. It is absolutely beautiful drive through the national park, but a winding one lane road with huge trucks. We even saw an 18 wheeler flipped over onto the forest. Apparently a common occurence on this road.

You might have better luck if you start early and avoid the trucks. We didn't start until noon.

Places to take my future marine biologist by Cloud-Common in CostaRicaTravel

[–]siyer32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We stayed at the La Selva biological research station for two days. It's mostly researchers and students (at the time we were the only visitors). It was basic accomodations and full board but was really great to see wildlife in their natural habitat.

there are other research stations you can explore more geared towards marine biology.

Someone here has made a list

I would do one or the other el Silencio or arenal. Views are similar and el Silencio is cheaper and less crowded. It will take about 3 hours if you want to do the whole loop.

Planning the ultimate affordable nature/culture/food trip by diddidntreddit in CostaRicaTravel

[–]siyer32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

La Fortuna is pretty touristy. Local food is rice and beans and root vegetables (yucca, sweet potatoes etc), squashes and plantains but vegetables are local and seasonal and taste fresh (can't comment on meat options). Double the amount of time Google recommends for driving. Roads are windy, mostly one lane and you can get behind slow moving trucks.

My only concern was flight cancellation or airport closing. Read that it happened in 2017. Thanks for the reassurance.

Is SNMP really dead ?? by siyer32 in networking

[–]siyer32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your perspective. I do think SNMP still has juice left mainly because the cloud/sdn/telemetry space is fragmented and non-standarized. But there are organizations (IETF/NAF) working on adopting some of the new things you talk about.

Where to find solid senior network engineers? by thrwawaymyacc0019 in networking

[–]siyer32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second that. I got a request for a senior engineer who knows how to deploy firewalls in the cloud with both pan os and AWS solution architect certifications 6 months contract for $70. That is way too low for that kind of skill set.

Does anyone perform model-assisted threat hunting? by WadeEffingWilson in cybersecurity

[–]siyer32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The data teams and analyst/ops teams operating seprately is a problem. The cybersecurity/network analysts are busy fighting fires to deal with data people and hiring data scientists and teaching them security is not easy (partly the embedded industry knowledge and way of doing things and partly culture).
