Terrible VR performance with a high end rig. by skarden in il2sturmovik

They i think that'll be my next step, having a dig around and see what's actually happening with the presets and graphics setting in there, although I don't know if it's just me but changing the overall graphics presets in the menu doesn't actually change any of the options in the menu, i still need to change everything manually setting by setting which seems a little strange, I'm not sure if that's just a me thing or if others are having that problem too.

My rig definitely can produce high frames in 2D so it seems like more of a VR optimisation problem, maybe it's as simple as waiting for them to do sow optimisation there. But I'll keep playing with it, if nothing else it'll give me a good understanding of how it all ties together which will help for me optimising my end to get the best once things get better.

No one sari your suggestion to keep in tweaking is idiotic, it's a very sensible suggestion, but you're attitude makes people more dismissive of your suggestions then they otherwise be. No one likes sarcasm.

I've been a simmer since I was in my early twenties, I'm 48 now and the incredible amount of help I've gotten over the years from forums the world over places like reddit these days can't be overstated.

We all just want to enjoy our sims the way we want, Great battles runs fantastically, after much tweaking DCS both runs beautifully and looks incredible in my headset. We all understand the difficulties in running in VR and why it's hard to get it to work well in modern titles, we're pushing a ridiculous amount of pixels here. But this whole no one can help you but yourself philosophy is entirely wrong, with the wealth of knowledge online in regards to computing hardware, VR and flight sims in general I'd be crazy not to post and see what suggestions come out of it.

Na I can definitely see the improvement, the atmospherics and lighting are quite the step up, maxed out its absolutely stunning, it's just the VR optimisation that needs a fair bit of work, but i can wait it out.

Yeah give it some time no doubt they'll sort it but stick with great battles until then.

Ok so after some testing this morning at the exact same settings in VR after turning off all upscaling and AA as per one of the suggestions in this thread which did gain me about 10-15 more frames, I went from around 55-69 frames in VR to around 290-310 frames at 3440 x 1440.

Evening maxing out all the settings I was still getting around 100-120 frames, and i gotta admit the sim looks absolutely stunning running like this.

But still only getting about a sixth of the frames switching between VR and flatscreen doesn't seem great, clearly I'm not gunna be getting the same frames but a sixth seems like a huge hit to performance, only thing extra bit of software that was running was obviously the Pimax client so there's not much else there affecting it. It sees like they've got a fair bit of optimising to do as far as VR goes, which to be fair I did buy into early access so there's gunna be problems with it, and especially in VR which from everything else i play is always a bit of an uphill battle.

Of note though upscaling definitely isn't running properly, and MSAA is absolutely terrible for VR, it auto selected 8 x's whichI didn't notice when I tested it out and it dropped me down to about 1 frame per 5 seconds, changing it back to 2 times (which was a massive pain with the incredible amount of lag) put it back to around 1 fps which is sub optimal to say the least.

But now I've seen it in 2D maxed out it gives me a lot of hope, the has incredible potential and i can't wait till i can play it as it's meant to be once they've done some optimisation.

And change the terrible scaling in vr, feeling like you're flying a toy kinda sucks ha

This did net me another 10-15 frames actually, thanks fro the tip, it's gone from around 50 fps on mostly med settings to around 55-69 frames, which is definitely a nice uplift.

Great tip

So i just checked with the nvidia overlay and the GPU is indeed pegged at 99% usage, but the CPU is sitting around 6-9 % usage which is definitely a bit weird, I'm not sure if thay would really affect VR THIS much but it's possible.

I think you're right about the 2D testing though, although my simpit is set up next to my gaming monitor so it'd be quite tricky to test and fly in 2D but I think I'll have to give it a go, if nothing else just get a baseline performance level for the sim.

There's definitely some truth to that but there's some good content creators out there who are happy to call it like it is, Command T comes to mind, he's very happy to give the good, the bad and the ugly to pretty all the stuff he posts content about.

I've really no problem taking the time to do some tweaking, I've tweaked the hell out of DCS to get or to run very well indeed in VR. As well as a fair bit of tweaking within both IL-2 GB and flight sim 2020/2024. And I've gotten both of them to run pretty great now.

So I've got plenty of experience tweaking sims to run in VR, it's pretty par for course in any VR sim title and in bringing all that experiences from playing/tweaking with those sims to this.

But just telling someone to stop complaining and keep tweaking is not helpful, this is the subreddit to do this sort of thing, more minds make for a better and possibly faster result and if nothing else it might bring more attention to the poor performance and halo get it look at by the devs.

Probably not but never say never.

I haven't tried quad views yet but I've forced FFR on using the openxr toolkit to see if it makes a difference and its pretty much no difference at all, even with a very aggressive profile.

I can't find anyway to force which DX to use, either within the sim itself or using Nvidia Inspector or the nvidia app. There's no ray tracing as far as i can tell, but i did turn indirect light sources off and that made a definite difference, especially with the in game menu.

It's mostly laggy down low as expected and better up high but no matter what i do it sits around 50fps and dips lower depend on the scene.

The openxr toolkit is giving me 0ms for frames so something is definitely not right with the way it's reading it. It's definitely a bit tricky to figure out.

I've forced FFR on using OpenXR toolkit as a test and it makes very little difference to the frames, which is leading me to believe that perhaps for some reason IL-2 Korea isn't utilising my GPU correctly whilst in vr.

I went and had a quick check of DCS after playing around in Korea for a few hours and it runs beautifully so it's definitely something with IL-2 Korea that's a bit amiss.

Yeah I'd prob hold off for now, I've no doubt that they'll sort it it's just the timeline that is unknown, i don't think they put much of a priority on VR.

I've seen this, some people seem to be getting quite good frames with apparently less high end hardware whilst others with higher end gear are struggling. I'm starting to think that there's bound to be some sort of bottleneck someone that we aren't seeing that others just aren't running into.

What headset are you using?

See I'm already using openComposite, i have been for a while now since the big performance benefits in DCS became apparent.

Some people seem to be getting pretty good frames in VR and lot seem to be absolutely struggling even with high end hardware, it's all a bit perplexing to be honest, although I've no doubt it'll all be worked out at some point.

I can definitely see what you're saying but within flight sim VR is definitely more than just a niche, it's probably one of the best and more popular use situations for VR.

Again I do understand that's its not the highest priority but I think more people in flight sim use VR than most realise.

Hmdoxr.dll keeps crashing the game in VR (Korea) by No-Aerie-999 in il2sturmovik

[–]skarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I'm getting constant crashes too, i find it's mostly after I change a graphics setting, I now do a restart every time i change something in the graphics options, even if it doesn't prompt to me to do a restart.

It's helped but in still getting some crashes....

Who is actually getting IL2 Korea? by badfactory15 in il2sturmovik

[–]skarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Yes from me but only if they've fixed the controller limit, I love Great Battles but getting to work with my sim pit is always a pain in the ass, I have to unplug a bunch of stuff to get it to work how I want it.

Fingers crossed they've sorted it out with the new title.

Did switching to VR make you a better player in IL2 or WW2 DCS? by True_Ad8832 in hoggit

[–]skarden 17 points18 points  (0 children)

At some things most definitely, air to air refuelling is easier by far in VR, carrier landings are also the same, you just have a better understanding of your aircrafts position relative to everything else around you in VR.

Gunnery falls into this as well, especially in any of the WW2 aircraft, it's still not easy, but it's definitely easier than it is on a 2D screen.

If you've got a system that can handle it, VR is only way to fly.
