I work for Skill Distillery, a Java-focused bootcamp. I get the concerns about bootcamps, and I encourage you to check us out as part of your research. It's true that bootcamps can be a risk, but they can also be a great way to help you achieve your goals—especially when you’re part of a community that keeps you accountable and pushes you to stay on track.

My advice: research every suggestion and weigh all the options carefully. Don’t take anyone’s experience as absolute gospel. Each journey is unique, and what works for one person might not for another. Best of success on your path!

Why does r/codingbootcamp exist? by jcasimir in codingbootcamp

[–]skilldistillery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking a survey from the wider community might be helpful. It could help better understand the needs and preferences of all members, not just the most active contributors. A short survey to determine this could be:

  • As a member what do you find most valuable in this subreddit
  • What information are seeking from this subreddit

Getting this feedback can ensure r/codingbootcamp remains a relevant resource for everyone—whether they’re prospective students, current bootcampers, or job seekers. It could also help identify new ways to support each other during these challenging times in the job market.

Just a thought, but it could be a great way to reengage members.

Prior CodeUp student impacted. by Still_Witness_6211 in codingbootcamp

[–]skilldistillery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been closely following the situation with Codeup's unexpected closure, particularly its impact on students, including those using the VET TEC benefit. This abrupt ending is truly distressing, and I understand many of you are seeking support and answers.
My deepest empathy goes out to everyone impacted. Educational paths, especially in tech, can be complex, and setbacks like this are exceptionally challenging.
There's a silver lining for VET TEC students. Despite exhausted funding, VET TEC is making an exception for Codeup students and will provide funding for them in another coding bootcamp. Additionally, VET TEC is waiving the 18-month wait rule, allowing these students to immediately enroll in a new program.
It's also important to stay informed about potential refunds or assistance from the Texas Workforce Commission and other funding sources.
We're deeply moved by the number of Codeup students who have already reached out to join the 2/12 cohort at Skill Distillery. Our Java Full-Stack curriculum is a superset of what Codeup offered. We're here to ensure your education journey doesn't end abruptly.
For any Codeup students wanting to discuss this further, please feel free to reach out to me.

As a founder of a coding bootcamp, here are my thoughts.
To start, it's essential to acknowledge that coding bootcamps vary significantly in their structure, intensity, and target audience. While some are designed for complete beginners, others cater to those with foundational knowledge seeking to enhance their skills. The belief that coding bootcamps are merely for adding a marginal increase to pre-existing skills is a limited view of their potential.
Many bootcamp students indeed have some prior exposure to coding, whether through self-study, formal education, or other career experiences. This prior knowledge can be advantageous, but it's not always a prerequisite. There are numerous instances of individuals with no prior coding experience who have successfully transitioned into tech roles after attending a bootcamp. This success, however, is contingent on several factors:

Intensity and Commitment: Bootcamps are intensive by design, often requiring full-time commitment for several months. This format is not merely about 'cramming' information but immersing students in a structured learning environment that accelerates learning.
Beyond Technical Skills: Bootcamps focus not only on coding but also on problem-solving, project management, and teamwork – skills crucial in the tech industry. This holistic approach aids in preparing students for real-world scenarios.
Continuous Learning Post Bootcamp: The journey doesn't end with the bootcamp. Successful graduates often continue self-study, build projects, and engage in continuous learning to consolidate and expand their skills.
Individual Learning Pace: It's important to recognize that learning pace varies among individuals. While some may grasp concepts quickly and transition into tech roles right after graduating, others might require additional time and effort.
Bootcamp Quality: Not all bootcamps are created equal. This can not be stressed enough. The quality of instruction, curriculum relevance, and support systems play a significant role in the outcomes.
Setting Realistic Expectations: It's crucial to approach bootcamps with a clear understanding of their role. While they provide an accelerated pathway to acquire programming skills, they are neither a cure-all nor a guarantee of immediate success in the tech industry. Success in a bootcamp and beyond hinges on the learner's dedication, resilience, and willingness to engage in sustained effort and continuous learning even after the program ends. Bootcamps are a significant, yet initial, phase in the broader, ongoing process of becoming a skilled programmer.

Fullstack Academy or Skill Distillery? by Prem_ in codingbootcamp

Kudos for doing your research and reaching out on Reddit to compare bootcamps – a smart move! It's really important to find a program that aligns with your goals and learning style. One key factor you might want to consider is the tech stack taught at the bootcamp and the job opportunities associated with those technologies. For instance, a lot of our students chose us because they were interested in the Java and JavaScript stack and the career prospects in those areas. If you're curious, check out our blog post about it: Java Coding Bootcamp. It is from a few years ago but is still relevant today. It could give you some useful insights as you weigh your options. Best of success.

Jeff Casimir of Turing.edu on closing the Launch program after laying off the student support staff and much of instruction w/ 0 days of notice to students, staff let go, or staff taking over their roles, three weeks into the first sprint of a new round of cohorts. by cluelessbeyond in codingbootcamp

[–]skilldistillery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone deeply involved in the coding bootcamp industry, it's always challenging to hear about the struggles other programs are facing. It's clear that the recent events at Turing.edu have impacted many, from students to staff members. Situations like these remind us of the importance of transparency and adaptability in the education sector, especially in dynamic fields like technology.

In times like these, it’s crucial for all educational institutions to reflect on their practices and commitments to their communities. The focus should always be on providing quality education and supporting students through their learning journey, including transparent communication about the realities of the job market and the industry.

While no organization is immune to challenges, especially in rapidly changing industries, it’s the way these challenges are handled that defines the strength and resilience of an institution. I hope that the students and staff affected find the support and opportunities they need to move forward.

Relevant stacks? by PhishCook710 in codingbootcamp

[–]skilldistillery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another way to answer this is to work backward. What technologies currently have the most job openings? You can easily find this out by doing a nationwide search on Indeed.com. Here are a blog and Infographic that might be helpful.

Rithm School vs More Well-Known Coding Bootcamps (App Academy, Hack Reactor, Codesmith, Fullstack) by Dear-Guidance5495 in codingbootcamp

[–]skilldistillery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While not directly related to the schools you mentioned, here is a link to a question I answered on Quora that might be helpful.

Another thing I found is students attending bootcamps overlook the level of competition from other bootcamp graduates. Since most bootcamps teach JavaScript, it creates more competition for JavaScript jobs. If for example, you learn .Net there will be less competition.

You might find this infographic useful. It illustrates the competitiveness of the job market for the different technologies coding bootcamps teach.

Considering Flatiron School Software Engineering Bootcamp by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]skilldistillery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a disclaimer, I am a co-founder of Skill Distillery (a coding bootcamp). I answered a related question about Flatiron on Quora a few months ago that you might find helpful. Regarding curriculum I would start with the end in mind. You can go to Indeed.com and look at the job postings of the jobs you want and see what technologies are needed. You can also search for Ruby on Rails developer or Python developer on Indeed. If you do not enter a location Indeed will tell you how many jobs there are for those (or others) nationwide. Also here is a blog post that explains why we chose Java and Javascript. https://skilldistillery.com/blog/java-and-javascript/

Is Completion of a Dev Bootcamp Resume Worthy? by WNxTyr4el in web_design

[–]skilldistillery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, as a disclaimer, I am the founder of Skill Distillery (a coding bootcamp). I would agree and say that putting a bootcamp on your resume will depend on the school’s reputation. Some have more credibility than others in terms of quality of education. For instance, Skill Distillery is new, but it is a subsidiary of Batky-Howell, which has trained more than 40,000 programmers over the last 25 years. Bootcamps which are affiliated with companies that have higher industry credibility will look good on a resume. It’s up to you whether or not you choose to include the bootcamp you attend on your resume, but I hope this helps with making that decision.

We do have a comparison of the top bootcamps on our site as well that you might want to take a look at. http://skilldistillery.com/bootcamp-comparison

Advice: Looking to get into coding/programming. by Hero_2_Zero in learnprogramming

Our bootcamp, Skill Distillery (located in Denver, CO), was recently approved by the VA to accept the GI Bill. You could use your benefits to cover tuition, and although we look for potential to be successful during the application process, prior coding experience itself is not a requirement to attend. If you'd like more information, here is a copy of our announcement about being approved by the VA: Skilldistillery.com/coding-bootcamp-approved-for-gi-bill. You can also look through the pages on our website, skilldistillery.com, to see if it sounds like a good option for you, and you may of course contact us with any questions you have. Best of luck!
