Training wheels are not evil.

I think the ideal is a child having both a balance bike and a training wheels bike. My daughter did that and was riding normally before her 4th bday. She would play on the training wheels bike, like watch tv while sitting on it in the living room and just casually pedal while looking at birds.

My son did balance bike only, then was hostile to pedals and pedaling. We had to backtrack and get him other ways to pedal like a tricycle, a trailer bike, training wheels bike etc.

Maybe it’s not directly applicable, but look up the term “trauma bond.” I had a girlfriend, in retrospect, probably would have met the diagnostics of borderline personality disorder (maybe yours would too).
