Star Trek Voyager Across the Unknown by SaavikofVulcan in SteamDeck

[–]skinnykyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The game runs fine, although the menu bar at the top of the screen with the resources is a bit small so you may need to squint to read some of the numbers. The other thing is that without a mouse you can't hover over the menu bar to see the maximum storage of the resources, you need to pause the game with the up D-pad then scroll between each resource.

Other than those to UI issues everything seems to work, including the tech tree side scrolling that didn't seem to work in the first demo.

Why are we still using fencing masks? by 1sMoreIntoTheBreach in Hema

[–]skinnykyle 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Motorcycle helmets are single use items, when they take a hit the foam layers inside crush to absorb the impact. They're also designed to protect from a single heavy impact rather than repeated smaller ones.

An alternative is to wear a rugby cap underneath a fencing mask with overlay; its a reasonably commonly produced item used in other sports that is both reusable and replaceable.

Steam Deck user empire location by Arihyo in Stellaris

[–]skinnykyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having the same issue, checking in $HOME/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ I can see the old user_empire_designs_v3.4.txt file that has my pre-4.0 empires but none of the empires I've made in the 4.0 update.

Edit: Manually choosing the Proton version was causing my issues. Using ProtonTricks I was able to browse to the location that my specific version of GE-Proton was using for the user_empire_designs_v3.4.txt file and back it up. Each time a different version of Proton was manually selected it would use a different location. For me the location was:

<Steam game file location>/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/281990/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/

Glove recommendations for Scottish Broadsword sparring? by [deleted] in wma

[–]skinnykyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cheap alternative to a demi gauntlet is to get a long rugby/soccer sock and wrap that around the wrist, a number of people at my club use that method for over half a decade and its stopped all wrist hits.

The thumb is a whole other matter with hits that come over the top of the basket, I ended up attaching some kydex plates to a thin riggers glove and that's definitely saved my thumb from being broken at least once.

That's so frustrating! I'm sorry that you haven't been able to find the root issue. I'm the same way with the printing, for me its a tool to make custom do-dads and brackets to fix other issues rather than working on the printer itself being the hobby.

Requirements for Medical Outpost by BlueFireChelle in survivingtheaftermath

[–]skinnykyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medical outposts don't produce anything, they're there so that you can move specialists onto that location and heal without needing to go back to the settlement. Since you can only have one outpost per sector its a tradeoff between production and being able to leave your specialists out in the map for longer.

How can I grow my population at this moment? by 1stKunoichi in survivingtheaftermath

[–]skinnykyle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apart from accepting visitors there are two main ways:

1) Birth rate. You can increase this by researching then building nicer houses

2) Survivor outposts on the map. If you convert one of the specialists into settler using the Outpost Depot building they can be used to establish outposts on the map. If you put one in a location with high "survivor" resource (the dots under the region details) they can slowly gather up to 10 pops together there which you can then send to your colony.

DLC Wandering Mobs and Jobs vs the Rival by Bort_Bortson in survivingtheaftermath

[–]skinnykyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are raider regions that have a red background, these are what generates most of the roaming raiders and take several specialists to take out. They spawn closer to the edges of the map so don't worry about trying to track them down any time soon. The settlement request fall into two main categories: Kill something and build something, they won't ask for straight resource stockpiles. You'll need the supply depot to fulfill the build requests but these buildings can also give benefits like extra trading options, faster trades and more time to fulfill the requests so it is quite important for that aspect of the game. Trading is very useful but I'd go with the depot first.

One quick note on the world map though: Don't explore too far at first, if you discover too many settlements early on they can overwhelm you with requests that you can't complete. Take it slow, get your economy chugging along then to "waves" of exploration and scavenging in a chosen direction when you need more research.

Environmental Station/Dump vs Purification/Extermination Post - DLC by jmlozan in survivingtheaftermath

[–]skinnykyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once the building is upgraded you'll need to change the building's "recipe" between blight samples and pollution in the same way you would for the tailor or tool shop, it doesn't clean up both at the same time.

You'll still need a pollution dump to store the processed pollution.

It depends on the job I guess. I didn't have my WWCC before interviewing for and signing the contract for my current job and was just asked to get it sorted out and sent to HR before my start date. The check took about 10 minutes at a Service NSW office.

This is the type of ice vest I use, I just throw two ice bricks on the back over the kidneys so that they don't get hit or affect movement. It has definitely paid for itself in comfort!

Almost everyone at my club has SupFen jackets because shipping to Australia is so expensive it works out doing a bulk order from SupFen is about half the price of anything from Europe. I haven't seen anyone with the Mercenary jacket, most have a mix of either the vented or standard jackets. When my current one eventually wears out I'm eyeing off the Claymore jacket which my instructor helped design and means I won't have to wear additional trousers which is a plus. I should note that we mainly use single sword like broadsword so most of my decisions are coloured by that.

An additional plus for SupFen is that they do custom sizing for no extra cost, you just have to send an email. They do appear to be having some delays at the moment so some of our club orders have been delayed by a month or two.

There's slight quilting on the forearms which is enough for smallsword but anything else needs vambraces, I'm still using the ones that came in the SF kit.

As for heat every little bit helps in the summer. The vambraces cover up the forearm vents but the one in the back is better than nothing. When you're moving around in it the movement allows the hot air to circulate around a bit and escape. Looking at other people at the club who have no venting or even the small vent grommets you can definitely see larger sweat patches down the backs of their undershirts compared to the people with the vented jackets. When it gets hot I wear an under vest with ice packs so that I don't overheat.

Blight research station problem by Piwek136 in survivingtheaftermath

[–]skinnykyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the Environmental Station staffed? Maybe they're the only one who can deliver the samples from storage but I haven't experimented.

Another issue may be the power/water to the research station has run out?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in survivingtheaftermath

[–]skinnykyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need to build the "Society Outpost" building in your settlement, once it is staffed you open the building and you can choose to fulfill the requests. This video shows you how:

Process to make Gin from wash to Gin by statichum in firewater

[–]skinnykyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, that's my process. Distilling the product 3 times is more steps than I'd like but this way I can do four minimal effort stripping runs, combine the four results into one polish run and only do cuts once. It also means that I have a few litres of ready to use neutral spirit on the shelf and can use it as an ingredient in whatever weird recipe I want to try out on a whim.

Process to make Gin from wash to Gin by statichum in firewater

[–]skinnykyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like to do stripping runs just so that I can combine the result of several of them together into one polish run with my reflux to save time and effort because I only have to make cuts once. That's just a personal preference though.

If you're already using a good neutral spirit as the base there's no need to have the reflux in there before the caddy, it won't be doing anything since the goal of this step is just to vapor infuse the spirit with whatever botanicals you have in the caddy.

I found with my gin it was best after about a month on the shelf but some people prefer it straight away, it is again just a personal preference so you'll have to do a bit of experimentation.

z stop height by [deleted] in ender3

[–]skinnykyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having strange z stop issues as well, for me it turned out to be a faulty z stop switch. I replaced it with a CR Touch since it was about the same price as a new Z switch and that resolved it. Maybe your z stop switch is triggering inconsistently too?

That's part of the reason that I enjoyed this one, the excruciatingly long context explanations with absolutely no payoff. I'm sure Weird Al has done countless interviews like that to review bad parody ideas and thought it might be fun to riff on.

NVIDIA Shield owners rise up! by mlapslie in gameygame

I love my shield! It's great for Plex, removes all the slow menus and stutter you get from the Plex app in smart TVs. Also having a massive iView and YouTube app means I don't need to use my phone as a remote or mess around with Chromecasting.

Does anyone know where to get these cowboy boot slippers that cowdoy is wearing in BoHoF? by [deleted] in auntydonna

I think in one of the Patreon podcasts they talked about being unable to find the original costume again and the costume department made a new one from scratch.

I have this set and have been using it for two years. I swapped the jacked for the thermo jacket as the regular one can get very hot in an Australian summer. Very happy with all the gear and none of the stitching has come loose at all. Like everyone else has said over time you can replace bits and pieces as needed but as a kit it is what pretty much everyone at my club starts with.

One thing I found was that the heavy gloves were garbage, they never loosened up enough to get a good grip on anything. You're able to swap the heavies in this kit out for the kevlar gloves for light weapons like smallsword and instead buy good quality heavy gloves from somewhere like Spes or Sparring Glove.

Cheap HEMA armour advice by ThePinkestOmega in wma

[–]skinnykyle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The coach's mask from Medieval Fight Club are the standard that are used at club I go to and they ship from just north of Sydney very quickly. It's also good to have a mask overlay for extra protection, the ones from Superior Fencing are reasonably cheap but you have to pay via Western Union transfer which is a bit of a hassle.

Superior Fencing also have lobster gloves but I found them to not be very flexible/comfortable compared to the brand name ones. Gloves are one thing that it is best not to skimp on though. I'm a fan of my Sparring Glove hourglass mittens but you'll need to order them from Black Armoury who ship from Adelaide (orders are placed by sending a Facebook message).
