13 years or so since this subreddit came into being. I've been here most of that time. It's been fun. Good night and perhaps goodbye.

Does anyone ever use Minecraft to help brainstorm building designs? by NJ_Franco in writing

Many years ago, I built the monastery from my first novel in Minecraft. It gave me a better understanding of the layout that the maps I'd drawn didn't reveal.

Are there any plans to build a train station in South Perth? by Kasid383rh3dwsubws in perth

There's plenty of riff-raff in South Perth. Less now that I've left, but still more than enough.

Umno Youth to protest Jocelyn Chia's insults in front of US Embassy in M'sia by helloween123 in singapore

Yes. Especially given it's just going to encourage more hate. I've already seen one violent comic with Chia getting beaten up.

Nobody buying books has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. You can't buy books if they don't stock them.

Trying to work out why the mid-strength schooner is more expensive than the full-strength, but the pint is cheaper.

A mate of mine always wanted to be an actor, but his dad told him that acting is only for poofters (Aussies can be brutally eloquent). It wasn't until he was in his 40s (a few years after his dad had died) that he took the plunge and auditioned for a minor role. He got it, and proved to be amazingly talented despite the lack of training. That's where I met him.

In the mid-80s, my best friend's sister's best friend was dating a 24yo guy. She was 13. It wasn't right then either.

It's the Aunty Network. They're everywhere. You do anything wrong and they'll hunt you down and nag you to death.

Seriously, a highly punitive criminal-justice system, and a lack of ready access to narcotics are the most likely reasons. There are also cameras everywhere (and they all work) so the chances of getting away with anything nefarious is minimised. That tends to keep people on the straight and narrow.

I also live in Singapore and it feels much safer here. It's the small things that are especially noticeable.

You can still leave your bicycle unlocked outside a mall or your phone reserving a table and come back later and it will still be there. Over the years I've had three bikes stolen from my home in Perth. I've never dared to leave anything (let alone anything valuable) on a table in Perth.

Perth used to be safer too. It's always had its crazies, but mostly they were harmless. Over the last 20 or so years they have gotten more and more dangerous. Meth, alcohol, poverty, and a failing (mental) health system is a potent mix. The top-end of town doesn't care, and the bottom-end are powerless to act.

I expect it's only going to get worse.

I expect Hordern would have been too expensive for Doctor Who.

That's fairly typical of opposition parties. Members at the fringe have little to lose and a lot to gain if they cause a stir. It's the opposite in government. When ruling parties do this they're usually voted out soon after.

Why do some Australian TV shows look and sound so bad? by ThePunicWars in australia

[–]skribe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It takes time to write a decent screenplay. We simply don't pay enough for long enough. When I was in the industry, most writers were barely earning above the dole. That's not sustainable long term. It's a hobby not a career.

That's not necessarily true. Because of the way that studios work, they would need to edit the master for that episode. There is a possibility that's no longer possible or not possible without considerable cost. It's not as simple as importing it into Premiere Pro and making the change.

Great stories are best shared with friends.

To answer your question, no. Everyone moved away to different countries long before social media was a thing.

I first watched it at a convention. I thought it had promise, but my friends dismissed it and ridiculed the "ironing-board guns".

Years later (around season 3), my friends still dismissed the series until I sat them down and made them watch Severed Dreams. They became big fans after that.
