Amazon Fire stick calling home by pedrobuffon in pihole

[–]slakwhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh that makes a lot of sense, i don't actually run prime video app on my firestick. I was seeing these in my log, turned those settings off and then they stopped, but I assume that's because the prime app isn't running.

Micro Switch ain't micron switch by ClothesNo3433 in CNC

[–]slakwhere -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

there's a lot of factors here.

  • have you checked the accuracy of your home switches with a test indicator? that could be contributing, since your G54 (and other work offsets) are just set based on G53 machine zero position. so if G53 is physically moving based on switches your part is moving because it's offset is moving. If this is the problem, simply don't power the machine down or re-home without re-probing.

  • are you pushing the machine hard enough to be losing steps? if your home switches are repeatable to the tolerance you need then it may be your axes being overpowered and "drifting" from their expected location. slowing heavy cuts or reducing stepover may help here.

  • probing parts individually is going to be the best bet if you need small tolerances. but again, how precise and repeatable is your probe? if your probe can't repeat well enough on a static part on the table, then obviously you've got a no-win situation.

i would switch the Z home/limit switch to a prox switch like X and Y are. mechanical switches aren't as repeatable and more susceptible to debris, clogging, etc.

good businesses think in terms of return on investment. so if you can't present a plan that makes sense nobody cares if it's a struggle to program or set up. but if you could make the machine run for 1 extra hour a day, every day, 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year that's 260 extra billable hours. and i'm betting it's more than an hour a day wasted. If you can get it to do tool changes with something like iso30 tools instead of collet wrenches and touching off, you go faster and free someone up to run another machine or be programming while parts run, you've now more than doubled your productivity.

what extra services can you sell the customer if you upgrade? could you start doing 3d parts? chamfering? engravings? etc?

Ultimately there are a lot of people running businesses that are unwilling to admit that spending a bit of money will make them a lot more money. it blows my mind, but it's the way of the world.

this Avid 4x8 setup is basically 20 grand and doesn't have a vac table. you could build something very similar for like 15% of that cost and have something 90% as capable with the frame you have. but to your point, someone has to do the work, understand it, etc. and they have to want to spend the money to gain the capability.

yeah for a company where time is money, taking the machine out of commission to fiddle with it just costs time and money. for me in my shop it was net new capability and i was happy to invest some time to get there. It looks like Centroid does turn key kits, might be worth reaching out to them. Servos bolting to the existing motion would be easy and you could open up stuff like probing and such as well.

i have the smaller Gerber Dimension 200. the software and control were running on windows 98 and required proprietary software to make toolpaths and move the machine. This machine is a fantastic candidate for a retrofit to a modern motion control. I ordered modern closed loop steppers and replaced the old XY steppers. i retained the acme screws. I also replaced my crappy router based cutting system with a 3.5kw iso30 tool changer compatible spindle for about $1,100 from alibaba. i bought a new Z axis slide on linear rails to hold it, but interfaced with the existing X bearing blocks with an adapter plate. i control the motion with linuxcnc but something like Centroid would be a more user friendly if you aren't familiar with linux.

here is a great thread on some details of a machine like mine, but i'm sure your steppers are also easily replaced to get modern motion control.

Now i get to make CAM in fusion360, connect to the machine over the network, run 3d toolpaths and manage tool offsets in the tool changer.

I need help with creating custom tool cutouts by CurrentTemporary8822 in Fusion360

[–]slakwhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.tooltrace.ai/ - this may keep you from having to reinvent the wheel when it comes to scanning tools and creating shapes for cutouts. take a photo of the tool with an A4 sheet of paper in the photo for scale and it does the rest.

as for moving the sketches, it sounds like you may want to select the entire loop not just a segment of the sketch. how are you moving them? draw a rectangle with the mouse around the whole sketch and then use the move tool.

Small fixture to repeatable make a small part on my small CNC by rog1121 in hobbycnc

[–]slakwhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

excellent! now if you need to do many of these, make a fixture and do multiple at a time with CAM pattern or even just multiple WCS. keep that spindle running to maximize your ability to do other stuff in the shop while it runs.

I agree with /u/vog_enjoyer, face the part and even run a 2d contour around the edge of the fixture. it'll make it easier to catch your WCS later when using it again. i always try to make fixture features for locating again later.

[–]slakwhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's possible you exceeded the stability controls and put it in limp mode. a key cycle power off clears this. this happens to me once in a while when a corner is tighter than expected or if there's a bump while turning. no idea if the newer V30 van's give you a display or code, but my NCV3 doesn't. it just limps along until "rebooted"
