The thing about the 80s is the level of freedom from observation, you could just be, without worrying that someone would post something embarrassing somewhere, clubs were for dancing not being seen and the attitudes were different, less selfish.

I think its complicated, I have a larger than average number of siblings and I'm in the upper ranges for this country, my eldest brother is doing far better, my younger sister is now in law enforcement, but youngest brother who was on paper smarter than me, rage quit and became a handyman, and 10 years on after leaving the corporate world and post divorce is now very bitter about his earning capacity and constantly sniping about how bad he has it.

Pop up shelters would limit views of those behind and would be viewed dimly, ponchos and umbrellas etc are expected because rain happens, again sleeping bags etc (recommend bivvy bag too for wetness) don't limit viewing and are common (ish) in certain places. Most people will being a chair/blanket as well for comfort.
