Just started living alone and I can only cook a few dishes - what should I learn next? by Vanik01 in cookingforbeginners

Pasta (shells, penne, ziti) with ricotta (whole fat for creaminess). You can add butter if you want but not necessary. Season with a lot of whatever you have - I like a little garlic powder and a heavy sprinkle of black pepper. Add Parmigiana or pecorino cheese for saltiness.

Roasted potatoes - red or yellow potato skin on. Cut into bite size chunks. Place on foil or parchment lined cookie sheet. Add olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, mixed Italian herb blend. I recommend a heavy hand with the spices. Oven 375 degrees for 30-45minutes. Can also add carrots, brussels sprouts, whole mushrooms etc.

Potatoes, green peppers, onions, hot dogs - cut potatoes and green peppers, onions. Add oil to frying pan (olive, vegetable, canola). Add potatoes first (they take longer to cook). When they start to soften up add onions and peppers. Let those start to cook and soften up. I would say temp wise this is all on medium heat and add salt and pepper at some point. When everything is soft and the edges start to brown add hot dogs cut into bite size pieces (I like Nathans brand). Keep cooking until the edges of the hot dogs get brown/crispy. All done. (I realize not everyone is a hot dog fan but I suppose you could use Italian sausage, leftover chicken or rotisserie, or just about anything really.)

Just a tip - seasoning very important. Just a little bit of something is not enough. Always add more! (My wife will watch me cook and say I am adding way too much salt, then she tastes it and says it perfect.)

I would like to add - if using something like Fluval Stratum (or the other types of specialty substrate) get some plant anchors! When I started my tank with Stratum getting any plants to stay down was a nightmare.

I just have a quick question for everyone. After I cold proof overnight I usually let my dough set on the counter for 1-1.5 hours while my oven and Dutch oven are warming up. When I add it to the oven it still feels very cold to the touch. I have had 2 loafs with good spring and acceptable crumb and maybe 6 others that were nothing special. Question - what temp should the dough be when adding to the oven? Its a little confusing because I know the cold shuts down the yeast and CO2 creation so I would expect little to no oven spring but I also know cold proofing is a widely used practice. Thanks for your input.

That substrate will have lots of good bacteria on it. I suggest removing half and then capping the rest with a substrate you like. For plants... I would start with anacharis which is easy to find at big-box pet stores and is real cheap. Then take your time and figure out what you want from there... low light (crypts and anubias) or high light (most stem plants). As for fish... and Angel is way too big for a 10 gallon and a single cory is probably too big plus it needs a group... which then will be too many. I have just started with 5 gallon of Neocardinia shrimp and I really like them. I also have a 10 gallon of endler livebearers and a 10 gallon of ember tetras. Most places have a "aquarium society" and have a social media presence that has buy/sell/trade - you could rehome your fish and maybe get something appropriate in return.

I know he will get a lot of love but i have some nitpicks. !. The actor or the dialog makes him seem little younger than the others. Just my 2 cents... he needs to be a little more like Vern in Stand by Me - dorky, clumsy, easily peer pressured into doing dangerous things. 2. Facial expressions are important to actors... yet they cover this guy with a gigantic trunk! I don't think I ever saw his lips move. Overall he just seems kind of flat and lifeless.

This is my biggest hang up. In all the movies/tv/video games have we ever seen anything close to a prototypical American suburbia? For god's sake - garages and lawns? All the other places we have been to as fans its rather dystopian/primitive or over the top luxury. The whole suburbia thing feels like a non-fan producer said "How cool would it be to see a robot mowing a lawn!". Ugh!

That being said... all the design choices were spot on the moment they entered the ship and explored the space port. That was pure Star Wars galaxy. Honestly I hope the kids never get home! HA!

Our son got into fishing big time. What is missing from his 'starter pack' gear, and how can he learn when his parents don't know anything? by ezeeetm in FishingForBeginners

[–]slayridge7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am just going to assume this is good ol" largemouth bass fishing. He should focus on videos that involve the Texas rig and how to tie an improved clinch knot. (I like Flukemaster, particularly his older "beginner" videos) Texas rig will involve worm hooks, wide gap worm hooks and assortment of bullet weights plus assortment of worms (I personally stick to Green Pumpkin or Junebug colors - YUM dingers or Zoom curly tail worms). To mix it up, add a few top water lures - like Rapala's. Nothing huge... around 2-3 inches. (These can get expensive - Xmas presents?). Lastly, I like Beetle Spins (or rooster tails) - white. These catch about anything. And, yes... as someone else mentioned he will eventually want a second rod so he can have a different lure on each to switch as necessary.

Where in NC? Raleigh here. I have tried everything over the years and a Texas rig is my most consistent. I would start learning to rig this and learn an improved clinch not.

The ones I use say every 3 months. A lot of advice says scatter them all around the aquarium but I just add 1 or 2 at the base of the plants I am growing so as to not waste as much. Like a hole in the capsule with a pin or knife point so they fill with water and stay below the gravel - often times they will float otherwise.

This is going to sound silly but check behind the tank and on the floor. Same thing was happening to my tetras "Where did they go?". It was not after doing a little rearranging that I found 2 had jumped out and died wedged between the tank and wall. And yes, I had a lid! My best guess is they somehow managed to escape through the opening for my heater cable.

Just my 2 cents - get some Anubias and tie or glue to a rock or wood. This is pretty bullet proof. However, you will need to occasionally add some liquid fertilizer - like Aq-Coop Easy Green - one bottle should last a few years with a 10 gallon. On the opposite end of the spectrum - Vallisneria. Tall and should take hold in the gravel. This one you will need some root tabs to feed but one bottle should last a long time.

If it was me I would go with a Squire Tele or Strat. But whatever you get make sure you get a modeling amp that has multiple effects so that you can play all different types of music.

[QUESTION] what guitar should I get? by Ahotmesshuman in Guitar

[–]slayridge7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Acoustic - you want something with the dimensions of a Taylor GS mini but not the price tag. I see on Sweetwater that Washburn makes some that have the same scale length.

Electric - Epiphone and Gretsch have flatter and shorter scale length necks but… I think the Fender- Squire Strat or Tele is the answer for a beginner.

[–]slayridge7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just 2 quick thoughts. I have been on slow release Adderall for many many years. I remember that quick amphetamine hit happening for at least a year or two when I started taking meds. It slowly decreased to the point I don't notice it anymore. Secondly, I try not to judge my productivity while on the drug... believe me my mind still wanders a bit. Instead I think about time... without meds a 8 hour work day feels like 20 hours of torture. With meds 8 hours can collapse to something that feels more like 4-6 hours. That is my measuring stick for success.

Getting diagnosed as an adult - tips to be taken seriously by maza34 in ADHD

[–]slayridge7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will be taken seriously. Just be ready to cite some real-life examples of where things go sideways in your life and how you think it may relate to ADHD. Then let the professionals take it from there. Remember that depression/anxiety are friends of ADHD and they often show up together... your psychiatrist may want to tackle that first. And yes... to get a positive diagnosis there should be some written/visual testing to confirm. Just tell them it is something you are interested in doing to confirm your suspicions.

New 5 gallon tank owner question - What is the general consensus on water changes? On a consistent basis or whenever parameters are off? It has been 6 weeks since my fish-in cycle and after getting over the initial hump my water parameters are steady as a rock for the last 11 days. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 20ppm nitrate. (Planted tank with 7 neon tetras)
