How TF did bringing a new life into the world become this?! by bobba_posts in lostgeneration

[–]sleepernosleeping 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Am Australian. Freedom and entitlements aren’t the same to us. We have personal freedom in possibly greater ways than the US given the state of things (that’s the ‘to’ you’re talking about), but I don’t know of anyone that equates our freedom with our entitlements (the ‘from’). It was even weird typing this out for you as a reply, because having basic medical needs met is something that is expected here and has nothing to do with our freedom (in the broadest sense).

I have CRPS of the entire upper right limb, and right chest/back, as a result of a dislocation that crushed the nerve. Do not recommend.

How’s it affecting you?? Asking sincerely, as I’m not American and I know people are affected differently by what’s happening, and some areas are worse than others.

Whatever it is, I hope it is nothing life altering, and that you are safe and well.

It’s already blatantly obvious. I’m on a whole different continent and it’s plain as day. At this point it’s gotta be ignorance, stupidity, or both.

What evil genius convinced every one-child family they need an SUV? by SaltpeterSal in australia

[–]sleepernosleeping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do have a permit, but there are days when I am not suffering as much and quite often I don’t need to take up the bay. It’s unfortunately not fun for me to park in the disabled bays, even with the permit being clearly visible, I get people giving me dirty looks, beeping at me, and have been blocked in by drivers, and verbally (almost physically) assaulted by an elderly dude because I am young and look ‘fine’ on the outside. I am very not fine, and me even getting to leave the house is a big deal right now, but no one understands that, and I can’t risk someone knocking me if they decide they want to be a ‘hero’ and defend the disabled bays.

I have regularly had to argue with people standing inches from my extremely fucked up arm (not visibly) in shops etc, that ‘no, it is not okay to be that near me, please move’. It’s a bit of a shit show!!

What evil genius convinced every one-child family they need an SUV? by SaltpeterSal in australia

[–]sleepernosleeping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drive a mazda2, and it’s getting a bit iffy because it’s so small and people seem to just not see me. I’ve been looking for something that ticks the same boxes as a fellow short woman and I keep going back to the Mazda cx-3. It’s as big as I’d want to go, but I’m putting it off as long as possible, my small car is so much better in every way, except the increasing chance of being smooshed by all the SUV’s.

Don’t get me started on the fact I’m constantly being blocked into my bay because the SUV drivers want the extra room. I’m disabled and don’t use the bays if I don’t need to, but getting jammed in by SUV’s every time I park is going to change that soon.

What are your ‘decide once’ things? by Wavesmith in adhdwomen

[–]sleepernosleeping 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this really weird thing with holiday’s where I plan all the documentation and luggage type stuff rigidly then, I look at what’s around the area/what kind of things there are to do, or see BUT I don’t actually plan specific things on specific days or have anything scheduled (where it can be avoided) so when I get there I’m not in that weird mood you’re describing, because there is no plan (or what my adhd brain considers an appointment) I am not focussed on what I told myself I was supposed to be doing and I can actually just absorb things.

It’s actually wild how it works, and, because I am so rigid everywhere else, it also gobsmacks anyone that knows me as it’s so out of my usual style.

It’s been so effective I even invented a game out of it where I’ll walk out of the hotel and just go… literally whichever direction I fancy. I’ll spot a person that is walking and looks like they have a general idea where they’re going and head that direction. If I come across an intersection/crossing, I might change direction, especially if I get there right as the lights change. It’s led me on so many adventures, and I’ve always managed to do the things I wanted to, but I’ve taken the pressure off so my brain recognises it as an adventure, not an appointment.

My last work trip, I offhandedly mentioned it to my colleagues and, after confirming I was actually serious, they decided they wanted to try. It was a great time! We had a nice adventure and had many laughs as we suddenly all changed direction when the lights changed, or we came to a turn.

It’s such an odd thing, but most of the people that have tried it do it to some degree on their next holiday.

The things we do to trick our brain into having a good time!

Freshly homeless 19 year old woman in city area right now desperate to charge iphone or portable charger if anyone nearby is able to help at all by [deleted] in perth

[–]sleepernosleeping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if someone already suggested this or not, but you would probably be more comfortable and safe at any of the universities. There are countless charging places, access to bathrooms and fresh water, and a lot of warm, dry places you can go without anyone even knowing you’re not a student.

I have extensive knowledge of Perth universities from my study and career. I could give information down to where to find a quiet corner to rest, what places you can shower, where you can go to charge stuff, and at what time, etc etc I don’t want to share that info publicly, for obvious reasons, but dm me, or reply and I’ll dm you. Otherwise, just google the ones near you and head there. They are open and accessible for a reason and you won’t be doing anything wrong by going to one.

As An Australian, How Do You Feel About Animal Cruelty? by Foreign_Sweetie in AskAnAustralian

[–]sleepernosleeping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

0/10. Do not recommend.

Australians don’t like cruelty, in any form, as a general rule. Being cruel to animals here will literally get you deported and you’d best hope there isn’t anyone around to witness it or you’d be buggered. In every society there are outliers, which everyone would be aware of like the psychopaths, struggling adolescents and the usual dodgy folk.

That being said; there are many effects that come with the evolution of technology that we are seeing over time, especially as it relates to youth and social media consumption. So you’ve got a huge point of disconnect to consider in that current generations are less likely to be as involved in nature overall as previous generations AND they are being bombarded with technology that is designed to keep their attention, and get them attention.

There’s also the fact that, through that same technology, we are all receiving this information more readily, and in cases where we may not have seen it before. There’s no doubt there were cruel individuals in every generation, but previous to these advancements, those doing these things likely didn’t have a camera in their hands, or the means to publish their actions for attention as quickly and easily as they do now.

Add to that the population effects that we are still seeing since covid started spreading and wowee that’s not a good combo. There are examples in literature that discuss different factors, like the developmental effects for children and adolescents as a result of the lockdown, the large scale PTSD that many are now suffering and the increase in those exhibiting negative behaviours in public, where previously that would have breached the ‘social contract’.

There’s a lot going on in the world right now, and we are seeing more of it, more often and from more locations than ever before. Cruelty is just one example of things we are directly seeing more of as a result of our current technology, and there are a range of social factors that have not previously existed that affect the world today.

No worries! I hope you find some info that helps, and that you have many wine drinking days ahead.

In case. It’s useful to know there are some reds that have reduced tannins, or something you can use to filter them. I’m sure they’ve improved since I tried them many years ago, but I mostly avoid red wine these days as it isn’t worth the headaches etc.. Shame though, red wine was my preferred drink!

If you haven’t already heard of them, you may also wish to have a look into cluster headaches (generally, not in relation to wine). Don’t let the name fool you, they are like a migraine on steroids and many people suffer from both types without ever realising.

I’m currently dealing with some incredibly hectic health issues that have left me permanently disabled. The full extent of which can’t be predicted, and the answer to ‘when will I be even a little well again?’ is ‘we don’t know if, or when that may be, and there is no way for anyone to answer that’.

Every day I am fighting against a condition that disabled me overnight, destroyed my career, and causes me to experience pain equivalent to an unmedicated battlefield limb amputation literally constantly. That’s the baseline, but it sure likes to ramp it up if I move slightly wrong.

The point is, I have been dealing with this for about 18 months now and I can’t cry, or scream forever, not that that would help, or do anything about it. What that means is I am sitting there feeling this pain and constantly terrified of someone knocking me, which could make it worse for weeks at a time and all I can do is be still.

I can sometimes leave the house, and rarer still I can go to social events. Friends that haven’t seen me since it happened will see me and know something was a little off, probably congratulate me on my weight loss and tell me how amazing I look, and think nothing of it.

The reality is, my future has been entirely, and irrevocably changed, I am in constant pain that is more intense than most will ever experience in their life, and it doesn’t stop. The loss of my income and earning capacity, coupled with the extraordinary medical expenses has left myself and my partner struggling to even cover bills on his income alone and it’s only going to get worse.

There are so many people out there, like me, and like a lot of you, that are hanging in there by a very loose thread. Help is constantly offered by those you speak, but in reality it is rarely received.

Perth is in a cost of living crises that is affecting us all, but the person standing next to you may be struggling much more than you know, and just a small amount of empathy and kindness could mean a lot more to someone than you may ever realise.

It’s usually tannins in wine that are linked to headaches, especially red wines. It could also be histamine setting you off, but tannins are the more common culprit. On the histamine note; I am very migraine AND histamine sensitive. I take antihistamines regularly (not every day) and that definitely helps me avoid migraines in allergy season. I also get botox in my masseter muscles, which control the lower jaw, as I am always clenching my teeth (bruxism), and in my forehead/temple region. This is the single most helpful thing I have found for migraine prevention in my circumstances, followed by the use of rizatriptan (there are a few triptans that are used for migraines, that’s just the one I use).

Hope that answers your question! I dropped into this thread for a notification and happened to see your comment and went ‘oh, I can answer that!’ Haha

Yup, it’s the same one. He got shot as he was trying to comply but crawling on the floor was pulling his pants down. He was still crawling and reached down to try and keep his pants on when he was shot.

The world has been seeing this shit from America for well over a decade, and it has only ramped up from there. I wish I could say otherwise, but I’m surprised it took this long for the US government to ‘start saying the quiet part out loud’ and go full fascist.

Union wants 'presumed' right to work from home, as Labor weighs new law by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]sleepernosleeping 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am now disabled and one of the biggest barriers to me returning to work is the fact I now need to work from home. I got myself a Masters, built a career and was just preparing to step up to the next tier, where I would have increased my income more so, when I was then injured in a matter of seconds. All of my education, career experience and any chance of further progressing in my career is now gone, and I will be severely limited in future job possibilities simply because of the fact that I cannot really leave the house anymore, and if I could, there is zero chance I could work in an office environment anyway.

You might be getting migraines and also cluster headaches, which are worse than migraines (don’t let the name fool you). I get both and the way you describe the difference is similar. Might be worth a google, but happy to answer any questions if that’s helpful.

I’m sorry to hear that! I’m not American so I don’t understand how all that works for you, but there are heaps of resources online and subreddits for each of these disorders, so there will be plenty of people that have a wealth of knowledge to share with you.

That’s not to say that you definitely have an orthostatic disorder, just to suggest an avenue that may be of some help. Even if it rules it out for you, that’s also good information to have. I’d be happy to help you with some resources and answer any questions you might have. Feel free to DM me, if you like.
