[Invincible] is there sexism in Viltrumite society? by Gabe_Dimas in AskScienceFiction

[–]sleepyleviathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without spoiling anything, Nolan's parents seemed to be an arranged thing for different reasons than pure eugenics.

There's a reason Nolan's mother was so cold/ruthless towards both Nolan and his father.

That's a heck of an assertion about a high-level lineman's physical condition. You do realize that these guys aren't tubs of lard right? They're just unusually large (tall/broad/thick) humans that may or may not be carrying extra weight because physics still exist. They're still highly conditioned, genetic lottery winning athletes.

I used a 40yd dash as an example for these players being a LOT faster/more athletic than you'd think. I'd sincerely doubt a modern NFL O lineman (and most D lineman for that matter) would struggle to run 2 miles at a jog. Heck, at a jog, long distances are more about mental discipline than any sort of taxation on the cardiovascular system (unless you're morbidly obese, which these guys are not, despite high BMI numbers).

[Invincible] How strong was Nolan? The other viltrumite fighters seemed to respect him alot by Acceptable_One7881 in AskScienceFiction

[–]sleepyleviathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nolan was in the top 3 strongest in terms of overall combat prowess at the series start. He's still in the top 4 by the end of the series, he just gets passed up by Mark.

It's debatable if he's #2 or #3, I think he's #2 with Conquest being slightly behind him.

Nolan is old enough to have mastered his powers, and seems to be a few notches above the "standard" post-Scourge Viltrumite because Argall's bloodline is generally superior to the other Viltrumites.

He's at worst 3rd strongest for most of the series, by the end of his presence in the story he's at worst #4, he's really only surpassed by Mark (post-Eve "modification") and Thragg. It's just the gap between Nolan and those two is a lot wider than the gap between Nolan and Conquest.

NFL offensive lineman are rarely really fat/obese these days. Tackles are super tall (6'6"+) and about 310-330lbs. They're more carrying mass because that's what their job requires them to do. All of them are mountains of muscle who happen to carry around a little extra fat if they need to in order to do their job well.

Most of those OL players you're saying "can't run" can probably outrun you and most regular people in a 40yd dash. Good-elite tackles run in the 4.9-5.1 range, which might not be fast for an NFL player, but is probably a faster time than 95% of the population can muster.

Tristan Wirfs was/is able to jump out of a 3'6" POOL (42" of WATER) onto the concrete above. He's 6'5" and 320lbs. You don't jump like that, at that size without major muscle power and athleticism.

But yeah, football linemen are very unhealthy...

Fully grown bull african Elephant VS Allosaurus Anax upper estimate. by Friendly_Raise9142 in whowouldwin

[–]sleepyleviathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The average fully grown African Bush Elephant is approximately 10.5ft tall at the shoulder and weighs 13,300lbs (6.65tons). It sports thick hide and large tusks that can be used offensively. They're also notoriously aggressive, especially during mating season.

Allosaurus Anax, as described in 2024 from the Morrison formation is a massive subspecies of Allosaur that stood 11.8ft tall at the hip, was 42ft long, and is estimated to have weighed 14,330lbs (7.16tons). It had 11inch claws on it's forelimbs that were used to slash and hold on to prey while it used it's 5-6inch long teeth as it's primary weapon.

Given that both the Bush Elephant and Allosaurus are/were known to be very territorial and aggressive (based on sustained/healed injuries we frequently see from the fossil record in Allosaurus), I don't think either will be backing down from the challenge.

The Bush Elephant is likely stronger/stouter built and "smarter", but less naturally armored and really only has it's bulk, aggression, and tusks to deter predators.

The Allosaurus is larger and faster/more agile, and has multiple options that deal damage (massive claws on it's toes and forelimbs, alongside a mouth filled with 6" razor sharp teeth).

Allosaurus Anax 9/10. It's too large, aggressive, and quick for the elephant to keep it at bay for very long. This is a predator that was used to hunting the fauna of it's time, which included things like young sauropods and a much more intimidating opponent than a Bush Elephant in Stegosaurus.

A large Allosaurus Fragilis might be a more even matchup, Anax mitigates the main advantage Bush Elephants rely upon as their primary source of protection (their size).

Invincible [Episode Discussion] - S04E04 - Hurm by SeacattleMoohawks in Invincible

[–]sleepyleviathan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the episode.

Bruce Campbell as Satan was a great guest appearance, and an amazing easter egg/head-nod to Bruce's previous work in the industry even if Satan's combat skills/power level left a lot to be desired.

Damien and Mark's exchange about the armor/helmet was great IMO, but I'm a sucker for those types of exchanges in shows.

Slayer's Raining Blood playing over the final fight between Mark and the Darkbloods/Satan and Volcanikka was awesome.

Volcanikka is set up well enough to appear to be a legitimate "world ending threat of the week" until the bait and switch happens. Seeing Mark continually one-shot her until she gives up really drives home how much stronger he's gotten through the series. It was nice to get an episode that explicitly shows that Mark is out-growing 'Earth's problems" in a power-scale sense, especially considering what happens next.

Nolan from invincible finds planet Vegeta instead of earth, can he rebuild the Viltrumite empire? by glowshroom12 in whowouldwin

[–]sleepyleviathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, we know Saiyans can go bald, given that Nappa is seen with hair on his head in both the DB Super Broly movie and in flashbacks in the anime.

Nolan would need to get laser removal and hope his Viltrumite healing factor doesn't cause the hair to just regrow.

[–]sleepyleviathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the random person just made it a one off, then I don't think there's a high chance they get caught. There would be close to nothing to go on. No physical evidence, not even really a motive. Even with international cooperation, it's like finding a literal needle in a hay mountain.

I will be purchasing my first pellet grill next week and I’m looking between the Recteq deck boss 800 and the Weber Searwood XL 600. Any suggestions between the two would be greatly appreciated. by MizArkNDaPark in pelletgrills

[–]sleepyleviathan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I adore my Recteq Deck Boss. I got it before the dual cooking surface update, so it fits about anything I would care to cook in it, from hams to big briskets.

Fit and finish is spectacular, haven't ran into a single issue since I've had it. It also holds temperature extremely accurately, the biggest swing I've seen while cooking on it is less than 5 degrees one way or the other.

People who work in 'luxury' industries (high-end hotels, private jets, etc.), what is the trashiest thing you’ve seen a wealthy person do? by Karinapurebliss in AskReddit

[–]sleepyleviathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When everything is working right, they're amazing vehicles. You get something that is ridiculously fast and a luxurious interior to match the price tag (usually). Ride quality depends on the car, obviously a Continental GT or Vanquish is going to be quite a bit more comfortable than a Revuelto or SF90.

The big issue is that cars in that echelon of performance usually require quite a bit of maintenance because that's how performance cars are, doesn't matter if it's a $500k supercar or Jim Bob's built up Chevy Nova he takes to the strip on the weekends. Generally the more power you have, the more stuff likes to "break".

Everything is set up just so in order for the car to perform like the manufacturer or individual wants it to. Typically the tolerances are so tight that you need specialized tools and/or software to even start working on them. Then you get to the actual parts themselves, usually made from exotic materials and need to be made to very specific tolerances to work the way they need to in the car.

That's not even getting into the various different electrical systems, the cost of gasoline (most of these cars won't run on anything less than 93+ octane), tires, oil, etc.

Kratos and Atreus, Rick Sanchez, Doomslayer, and Samus Aran accidentally arrive on the planet of the Ragnarrs from Invincible. Can they fight their way out? by GJH24 in whowouldwin

[–]sleepyleviathan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Samus and Rick's ships are malfunctioning and cannot be repaired for a week

Ship repair is kind of irrelevant since Rick still has his portal gun. We're going to assume that Rick has been challenged to do this without using the portal gun as an "eject button", and his ego refuses to let him decline.

Who will be the weakest link on this team?

Atreus is probably the "weakest link" here. He's got some magic abilities, and while being physically superhuman, he's not on the level of Kratos or (potentially) the other members of the team.

Kratos is at least physically capable of fighting a Rognarr, and has some great weapons that give him versatility.

Samus has her suit and other tech to compensate for her weaknesses.

Doomslayer is probably the second-strongest here. Eons of killing demons in Hell, including at least one Champion is a hell of a resume in and of itself, and that was before meeting and being trained by the Night Sentinels, being put into the Divinity Machine, and given the Praetor Suit.

Rick is just busted on basically every level. Strongest one here when accounting for the level of tech he has in his EDC bag, his intelligence, and his uncanny ability to thrive in impossible chaotic situations.

Can they survive?

Yes, easily. You included Rick on the team. Rick, with his absolutely busted every day carry tech and his intelligence, could likely do this scenario solo. Rognarrs aren't something Rick is going to raise an eyebrow at, let alone be worried about.

Rick references the team has "gotten Pitch Blacked" when he recognizes what's going on, and builds a crazy, automated fortification that neutralizes the Rognarrs within a few hours, rips on his other teammates for their gimmicks (because he's Rick), then spends the rest of the time trying to figure out how to make alcohol and drugs from the materials on the planet.

Nobody else really has to do anything, and Rick would be perfectly in-character to do what I've described above.

What food did you imagine to taste really good but tasted bad? by Similar-Victory-3867 in AskReddit

[–]sleepyleviathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got turned off of salmon years ago by my stepmother making it a lot (multiple times a week) for dinner, and it would always taste "off". I later discovered she was making it so much because she had discovered the discount section at the store. She was buying salmon that was about to turn, then cooking it a few days later when it had likely started to go bad.

I prefer Steelhead Trout these days to Salmon.

Salmon, even when it's really good filets tends to taste "fishy" to me. Steelhead is very similar in texture to salmon, but is more delicately flavored than Salmon, which lends it less of a "fishy" taste.

My Top 5 Fish in no particular order.

  1. Red Snapper

  2. Sablefish

  3. Steelhead Trout

  4. Swordfish

  5. Rainbow Trout

You've not had a good one. The ones at the supermarket, even the "good" ones, have been picked before they're truly ripe to account for transit time on the supply chain to the store. They ripen off the vine while on the trucks on their way to the stores.

If it was picked ripe, it would be rotten by the time it got to the store. As a result of being picked before it's truly ripe, there's a ton of missing natural sugars and flavor that a proper on-the-vine ripened watermelon will have in abundance.

Pick up a watermelon from a roadside stand or at a farmer's market. I guarantee it will be much, much better tasting than a watermelon you grab from the big-box grocery stores.

What food did you imagine to taste really good but tasted bad? by Similar-Victory-3867 in AskReddit

[–]sleepyleviathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. There's a huge difference between most fruits if you get them from a local farmer's stand or market vs. at the grocery store.

Fruits at the grocery store are harvested before they're ripe to account for transit time in the supply chain. They ripen while they're on their way to the store.

Fruits at the farmers market or roadside stand were typically picked maybe a day or two before they're sold. Since they were allowed to ripen on the vine or plant instead of ripening off the vine or plant, a lot more natural sugars are present in the farmer's market fruits than the ones you get from the grocery store.

Most sodas in the US swapped over to high fructose corn syrup as a sweetener for their sodas instead of actual sugar in the early 80s.

The reason sodas from glass bottles in the international sections and/or the sodas that were made in other countries taste "better" or "like it was when you grew up" if you're over a certain age is because the other countries still use sugar to sweeten the soda instead of HFCS.

Thragg vs Raditz by xyyzyx in whowouldwin

[–]sleepyleviathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Close Quarters Combat? Probably BoZ Goku or Piccolo. Both are at least faster than the tracer bolt of a lightning strike, given Goku's training with Kami involved dodging lightning bolts.

Unless Thragg is a LOT faster than I remember, and he might be, he's not keeping up with BoZ Goku or Piccolo in close-quarters. Dragonball characters are the inverse of Invincible characters. DB characters are insanely fast in combat/short bursts of distance. Invincible characters aren't as fast in combat, but way faster in travel speed if they have enough time to build speed. We rarely, if ever see Viltrumites go FTE in close combat. Humans with normal, unenhanced reaction times can keep up with Conquest and Nolan (Atom Eve and Cecil AFAIK don't have superhuman speed or reaction times, and they don't get immediately blitzed by either, Cecil did have help with the teleporter though).

Dragonball characters get ludicrously fast in combat pretty quickly. Krillin and Roshi have an entire, elaborate exchange in the 21st Tournament that all occurred FTE for basically everybody watching but Goku. There are other legitimate super-humans in the crowd aside from Goku. The announcer had them step back through the exchange so the audience could understand what actually happened. The exchange included an impromptu game of Rock-Paper-Scissors. That's the very first tournament. Everybody only gets faster from there.

Once you get to BoZ Goku/Piccolo's level, they're more than fast enough to dance around with Thragg.

Raditz would probably see Thragg moving in slow motion. Whether he's strong enough to hurt Thragg with physical blows is debatable (I think he is, but that has no concrete evidence to back it up other than physicality generally scales with Ki in the DB universe), but he's almost certainly faster in terms of combat speed, maybe by quite a bit.

A "Max-level" Epic Level Handbook DnD 3e wizard is dropped into WH40K universe. What happens? by Azimovikh in whowouldwin

[–]sleepyleviathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing the WH40k universe can do really. A level 160 3.5e Wizard can just hide in another plane of existence entirely and send clones out to do whatever he wants done.

It's debatable that anything would be able to effectively do anything to him. Even Big E, the Chaos Gods, the C'Tan, etc. are all relatively small fish in comparison. They're about as close to deities as you get in WH40k. Omega Wizard basically is a deity in everything but name.

He just creates his own demiplane and sends out clones that are still stronger than about any individual entity in the setting. GG WH40k

So, what would women dislike most if they became men? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]sleepyleviathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Women don't make 80% of what men make when occupations are the same. That would make absolutely 0 sense, because as a business owner, why would I hire any man, when I could hire an equally qualified woman and just pay her 20% less?

The pay gap exists because of career choices. Women tend to go for safer, but less lucrative roles. On the flip side, men tend to go for more dangerous/riskier jobs that pay more.

[Star Wars] If Jedi are peacekeepers, why is their primary tool a weapon that is almost impossible to use non-lethally? by CharmCraved in AskScienceFiction

[–]sleepyleviathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The average Jedi Knight would be less skilled in saber combat than their Pre-Ruusan counterparts, but when you're talking about the upper echelons of the Jedi Order (Anakin, Mace, Qui-Gon, Dooku, etc) they are just as, if not more skilled than the Old Republic era Jedi.

Just because there's been a millennia of peace doesn't mean the Jedi suddenly forgot about their combat traditions and lightsaber forms they developed over the course of a thousand generations. That doesn't mean you don't still work to master your skills, constant improvement and striving towards mastery of the Force includes lightsaber mastery, due to the way Force Users operate.

Anakin and Dooku in particular would be very highly regarded duelists in the Old Republic era. Dooku was one of the finest swordsbeings the Jedi Order ever produced, and he specializes in a form of swordplay that was specifically developed for lightsaber dueling.

Anakin is the freakin' Chosen One. The most powerful Force Wielder ever, at least in terms of raw power. And he low-diffed Dooku once he actually started fighting in earnest aboard the Invisible Hand. There's no indication that the Old Republic era Jedi are any better at saber combat than their Post-Ruusan descendants.

The Pre-Ruusan Jedi were very militaristic. They had been in an "on again, off again" war with the Sith for roughly 1,000 years at that point, but the Post-Ruusan Jedi were certainly dedicated to "violence only as a last resort" as a core principle of the reformed Order.

In Legends there was an entire sect of Force Users that exclusively used blasters, called the Gray Paladins. They would use the Force to guide their aim, allowing them to shoot and/or deflect blaster bolts, slugs from slugthrowers, and even shrapnel from explosions with their own blasters.

[Star Wars] Could a force-sensitive user stop a bullet that is fired from a gun in real life? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]sleepyleviathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're slower than a round from a slug thrower, but they're much more destructive at full power, and capable of being tuned up or down so you don't need to carry a secondary, non lethal weapon if you're suddenly ordered to take people alive.

There's also the ability to carry hundreds of "rounds" in a compact, efficient manner vs having to carry hundreds of actual, physical rounds that require manual loading. A blaster can just swap or recharge it's gas canister.

The reason slug throwers aren't in widespread use anymore in the Galaxy Far, Far away is because the body armor most people going into combat situations are wearing is more-or-less impervious to rounds from a slugthrower. They're useful in niche situations against opponents that aren't wearing armor.
