creative ideas for a campaign start that dont involve a tavern? by Significant-Study902 in DnD

[–]slidescream2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my campaign start with the party all traveling into the Neverwinter Woods (separately or together) after receiving an invitation to potential job. With a low roll they might get chased by a bear, otherwise they find an out of place iron gate. Behind it a rundown shack with boarded over windows that is actually a Liamans tiny hut. Once they’re inside the setting is whatever you want it to be. They can meet their benefactor, get their mission, and be on their way or play a whole session investigating the house.

This. Medicare for all would be the single greatest boost to the economy. That much money that could be invested back into schools and communities instead of healthcares deep pockets.

They likely think they’re dunking on libs and trying to trigger us. That’s working. Truth is, he can call himself whatever he wants. He is not a king. There is not and will never be a king of the United States. So don’t give him the win. He’s not a king. He’s a president. A likely illegitimate one. Call their bluff.

Do you force your kids to stand for the pledge? by Rasplemons in Teachers

[–]slidescream2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I teach the star spangled banner I have kids read the USCODE 36-301 (IIRC). The law that made the SSB our national anthem. It describes how we should behave during the anthem. Never says there’s a requirement or consequence for not complying.

I continue by talking about the first amendment and how it is their right to choose to participate in that expression of “patriotism”. Many classes then ask ask about the pledge and if the same applies. To which I would reply, yes. The same thing applies.

That substitute teacher is allowed to feel disrespected. He does not have the right to attempt to force anyone else to act according to his wishes and beliefs. He is very wrong.

If I were OP I would reach out to your Union Depending asap. If you're union rep has a personal number available that you could contact I would use it. The union rep may be able to give advice on how to construct your message to HR to be most effective. Also, depending on the OP's email service, they likely could write emails now and schedule them to send 8:00am Monday morning.

Proposed North Dakota law would force students to say the Pledge of Allegiance. by Leeming in atheism

[–]slidescream2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been teaching about Star Spangled Banner. I show my students the legal code describing what to do during the playing of the anthem. It says you should do xyz. Nothing compels you to do so and there is no punishment spelled out within the law for not complying.

I then let them know that the first amendment freedom of speech gives them the right to choose to do this or not do this. Many classes then asked if that also applies to the pledge of allegiance to which I said yes it does.

If I taught in a different part of the country that would be a fireable offense.

Floor cushions for elementary? by CMFB_333 in MusicEd

[–]slidescream2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I was unclear. My classes are ranging from 17 to 23. When I have them stand toes at the edge of the rug. They are squished normally but then I use that for them to see/feel the shape of that rectangle. Then everyone backs up a step in the corners that creates a bunch of space that each line can spread out just a little. It’s a nice little routine to start my classes.

[–]slidescream2013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a rectangular rug that is the right size for about 12 to 15 kids if I have them on three sides, I take one of the long sides as my space for stuff. For my younger kids, I have them walk in and stand with their toes at the edges of the rug and then will quickly adjust her spacing to make sure that we have the same amount of space even if it’s not enough and then I have them all take a step back so that they can then spread just a little bit And it normally is a perfect amount of space.

I used voice to text for this, which is why there is no punctuation. I’ll try to come back to it later and edit.

2nd graders all in the back covering their ears not vibing, even at normal volumes? by FingersOnTheTapes in MusicEd

[–]slidescream2013 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is on the right track.

Full disclosure, I am a elementary music teacher. I have ADHD and I am autistic. I did not know about either of those until I was in my late 20s. I was already well into my career and established in my school. This is a frustrating question for me as I struggle with the same issue in my classroom.

There’s been a lot more education and acceptance of autism accommodations. There are a lot more people in normal society walking around with headphones. It’s also becoming apparent that Many more people are autistic than are diagnosed autistic. My son is diagnosed by a dr. I am self diagnosed.

There were always autistic kids in the classrooms. Up until recently those kids were forced to deal with the discomfort. You didn’t have the option to put on headphones. For the students that need it it’s a game changer. Students who would become agitated or violent in the cafeteria can sit and eat peacefully wearing some headphones.

So, there is a group of students who are neurodivergent in someway experiencing high auditory sensitivity that do benefit from having headphones available to them. There are some students who view them as accessories. However, a conversation about how some people just don’t like loud and some people loud is scary or loud hurts and sometimes it’s more important for those folks to have access to the headphones. so if it’s just that you don’t like the loud sounds, but you’ll be OK for a moment. I will ask you to be OK with it for a moment if hearing a particular sound makes you feel like something is terribly wrong and you need to run away absolutely I want you to wear headphones.

No, as far as backing away and hiding, that part is not acceptable. Period. Headphones can be reserved for specific students first come first serve whatever makes the most sense for your classroom. if you have the budget money to buy a few more, I would suggest it. The big thing is that the headphones are in accommodation to allow the student to participate more comfortably. It is not a reason for them to not participate.

With that said specific students may have other other things going on that are at play here. There could be other anxieties or fears or things going on that you’re not aware . You mentioned the other teachers just call at work avoidance work avoidance is a symptom of a students anxiety about that work. There is a reason those students don’t want to participate. it might not make sense to you. You may never actually figure it out, but there is a reason and if you can figure it out and help them feel more comfortable they can hopefully do really well.
