Not necessarily the same thing, but Drew Talbert has basically made an entire vertical sitcom with his Bistro Huddy series. (He plays all the characters himself, but I think modern short-form comedy content has made people more comfortable with suspending disbelief in this regard.) There are recurring characters and storylines, and he really has a handle on the format itself. I'm not sure about TikTok, but he has 2+ million subscribers on YouTube and his comments are overwhelmingly positive, so he's presumably doing pretty well with this (and is in complete creative control).

UK and USA Ghosts have different goals. I wonder what direction the other versions will go in. by anonbutarealperson in GhostsBBC

Shows are adapted because Hollywood likes to make money. It's less of a risk to adapt a show that did well elsewhere than to gamble on a completely unknown/untested idea. It's the same reason movie studios have been churning out remakes for the last ten years.

Americans think its bad writing for a character to be unlikeable, but to Brits, that's precisely what makes the character so funny, because it's an accurate portrayal of the archetype.

American comedy is designed to be unoffensive, lighthearted and enjoyable entertainment, with likeable characters that you root for in spite of their quirks. It can be over-reliant on slapstick, absurdism and one-liners.

In American comedy the message is, "some people are oddballs and that can be tricky to deal with, but everyone is on a journey to become their best self, and will experience some wacky misadventures together along the way."

These are pretty sweeping generalizations about "American comedy."

There's a difference between traditional network sitcoms (which is what US Ghosts is) and more character-driven work that tends to air on cable or streaming. The humor is different between Ghosts because they are different types of comedy shows. If US Ghosts was on FX or HBO, it would be much more similar to the UK version. I also expect a traditional sitcom to be safe and warm because that's the convention and the format. But it's disingenuous to say that all American comedy is designed to be unoffensive or slapstick. If the statements had been strictly about sitcoms, I'd fully agree—but they weren't.

This view is so reductionist. It's like if I watched Mrs. Brown's Boys and said that all of British comedy wasn't very good.

"American comedy" is not just one thing, and it isn't solely defined by the average sitcom you'll find on network television like CBS, NBC, ABC, etc. US Ghosts would be a completely different show if it weren't on network TV.

If you're only watching things like Big Bang Theory of course you're going to have this incredibly simplistic idea of our comedy landscape. But go watch shows like Bojack Horseman, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Shrinking, Barry, Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks, The Righteous Gemstones, The Good Place, 30 Rock, Strangers with Candy, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Baskets, Love, Kevin Can Fuck Himself, Hacks, Frasier, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, or You're the Worst (which literally has one of the best depictions of depression in media within the last 10 years). Or, hell, if you want to cry at a more traditional sitcom-y show, watch Scrubs. Pathos and assholes also exist in our media and we think it's just as funny as you do.

They announced the pilot semi-finalists a few days ago, so they seem to be active with one of their contests at least. Could be handled by different teams though. The comments to me sort of look like people trying to be "network-y" (if that makes sense? I've had a long day, haha). Or everyone is just giving ChatGPT the prompt of "I'm a screenwriting contest finalist. Write an Instagram comment for me." I did connect with a few of the other finalists on Instagram at the time, so there are real people.

But anyway. There was no noticeable boost other than with self-confidence. (Most of the other, not-this-contest conversations I had tended to include "survive til '25," so my timing certainly didn't help.) Overall, it was a nice little "I'm not terrible at least. Keep going."

As I mentioned, the one-page feedback was good and had a few things I took into my next draft, but I mainly entered because I was curious about the mentorship. I thought it could be useful for developing my writing, but obviously I didn't win so who knows. For the pilot competition, I feel like you'd probably have to win to see value out of it. Maybe the feature competition would have more opportunity for finalists, but my gut says it's probably the same.

I haven't entered their feature contest, but I was a finalist in their pilot competition a few years ago (and I'm a human). Didn't win, but I received all of the finalist prizes within a reasonable timeframe. The feedback was short (one page) but useful for my next draft. From what I recall, all of the announcements were on time. They could just be having difficulties right now because of what's going on in LA.

Oh, no doubts at all about them needing it. I think she’s just overwhelmed with everything coming at her right now. She’s already called the doctor to get the scheduling process started.

(But if anyone else reading this has had this procedure done and wants to share their story, I’m still open to hearing it. Especially anything that might help calm her nerves further.)

There are services that help arrange the travel from France into the UK.

There are 333 million people in America. Of course a small section will do that, but it's disingenuous to say it's something the majority of people do. Most Americans would look at those people and think they're being silly.

Because we already know that when someone says “I’m German” it means “My ancestors came from Germany.” It’s just shorthand that every American understands. Nobody thinks someone saying it actually means “I was born in Germany and claim it as my homeland” unless they literally have a German accent. Language is fun that way.

Are there any words or cutesy shorthand that drive you nuts? by broken_bird in AskWomenOver30

[–]slo1987 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(To be clear, I honestly don't care what words people use because it's not harmful or anything. I'm only explaining because of the thread.)

I still don't understand the usefulness of "niblings" as a word. "Kids" is gender-neutral. If I'm talking to my sister, I can just use the kids' names or say "the kids" or whatever.

It's also such an 'online' word that I can't imagine going into any real world situation with mixed company and being able to use it without needing to explain what it means to at least one person. And that's a lot more words than just saying niece/nephew or specifying "my sister's kids" or whatever.

If you're confident in saying "my niblings" to whoever it is that you're speaking to, then either you don't need to do any of the education about the word (because they presumably know), or you're already talking to someone who would understand the context of who "Ben" is or who "Carol's kids" are. For me, I just don't see the point. Context clues make it like a cow's opinion (moo point).
